Re: Xavier recruiting

What ever happened to the "Smell the glove" bravado that the X fans used to have? Why did they suddenly get so sensitive to chatter over recruits and general prospects for each team next year? When did they start going back 10 and 20 years to tell us how good they are going to be next year? Wasn't that one of their pet peeves with UD fans in the past? When did "You can't win an NCAA game", and "You can't beat us" turn into "You can't get to the sweet 16", and "You can't beat us at home and away"?

2010 Top 12 Hot Board (Brian Snow - MusketeerScoop.com - May 13, 2009)

June 25, 2009 Update: After decommitting from Xavier and reopening his recruitment, Jordan Latham received only 3 scholarship offers (from Xavier, Richmond, and Oregon State). To the surprize of no one, he recommitted to Xavier on June 11th. Will Barton committed to Memphis on June 6th, and on June 23rd Donnie Hale committed to Purdue.

In-state foward commits to Purdue (ESPN / Scouts Inc. - June 24, 2009)

New Albany, Ind. power forward Donnie Hale verbally committed to Purdue on Tuesday, according to reports. Hale chose the Boilermakers over Xavier and Oklahoma State.

"Both are great programs, and both have nice coaches, but right now, it's hard to compare either of them with Purdue," Hale told the Lafayette Journal and Courier. "It was a pretty easy choice. Every time I thought about this, it always came back to Purdue."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hopefully, Buick Mack will be able to land Jay Canty (listed # 4 on Brian Snow's Top 12 list) who has offers.from Xavier, UNC-Greensboro, and High Point. Jay Canty made his first visit to Xavier two weeks ago.

I'm sure we'll hear it again if Mack out-recruits UNC-Greensboro and High Point for the services of Jay Canty.

Seems Marquette and Penn State also offered but who cares. The kid was invited to the Top100 NBA Camp and aquitted himself very well. When will your fascination with all things Xavier end?

Mack's regime never offered Hale and you know it but are, again, too ignorant.

I would love to get a commitment from Canty. He is ranked in Rivals Top150 and is developing very quickly.

There, even 2 links.

2010 Top 12 Hot Board (Brian Snow - MusketeerScoop.com - May 13, 2009)

Here is another update on a player on Brian Snow's Top 12 list:

Top-100 recruit likes Flyers (DDN - June 25, 2009) Excerpt:

Senior-to-be Brandon Spearman of Chicago Simeon High School — who is ranked by Rivals.com as the 71st-best player nationally in the 2010 class — visited Marquette this week and has offers from DePaul, Bradley, Baylor and Iowa State. But the 6-foot-3, 185-pound shooting guard said he favors Dayton and plans to make his college choice at the end of the AAU season in July.

Spearman visited UD earlier this month and was impressed.

“Man, wow, I couldn’t believe it,” he said. “I love it down there — everything from the campus to the people to the city. I just love it.”

Spearman is described by Rivals as “a physical guard who can dominate defensively.” And he could give UD its second four-star recruit (out of five) in the 2010 class.

Tell me where in that article Spearman says he "favors" UD. He didn't give a Top 3 list or anything. He said he loved UD, which might mean he has UD at the top, but I didn't read anything from Spearman in that article that said UD is my top choice.

Good luck though.

Keep up the obsession.

Atlantic 10 Class of 2009 Recruits (ESPN/Scouts Inc.)

It's hard to believe that Fordham's Dereck Whittenburg has out-recruited Mack, but the listing above speaks for itself.

The big danger for Mack (and Xavier) is that he will spend too much of his time trying to land 4-Star prospects that are out of his reach while neglecting 3-Star prospects that are within his reach.

For example, Mack could have had Middletown's SF Bill Edwards (6-6, 230 lbs.) for the asking, but Mack never offered him, and so Edwards signed with Penn State on May 6, 2009. Xavier really needs a SF for the 2009-10 Season:

Bill Edwards (ESPN/Scouts Inc. profile)

Bill Edwards (Rivals.com profile)

Xavier Musketeers 2009-10 Depth Chart (True Positions):

PG: Terrell Holloway (6-0 Soph.), Mark Lyons (6-1 Fr.)
SG: Dante Jackson (6-5 Jr.), Jordan Crawford (6-4 Soph.), Brad Redford (6-0 Soph.), Brian Walsh (6-4 Soph.)
SF: None
PF: Jamel McLean (6-8 Jr.), Andrew Taylor (6-8 Jr., a Division II transfer)
C: Jason Love (6-9 Sr.), Kenny Frease (7-0 Soph.)

XU Looks at Four Guards (June 3, 2009) Excerpts:

“At least for this year, gone are the days when you have a 6-6 wing that plays the three" according to Mack.

Mack would have three scholarships to give if Brown does not return, but he doesn’t plan to extend offers unless he finds the right players for the program. Although XU could welcome “a transfer or two,” it’s possible the scholarships may go unused.

Ohio Class of 2009 Prospects (ESPN/Scouts Inc. profile)

Presumably, 'Buick' Mack didn't offer Bill Edwards a scholarship because he was not rated as highly as Matt Kavanaugh (Dayton), Jon Smith (St. Louis), or Carl Jones (St. Joseph's), and Mack did not want to give Xavier fans the appearance that he was being out-recruited by the other Atlantic 10 coaches.

But he clearly is. Perhaps Mack should bear in mind that 4-Star prospects get a lot of offers from BCS-conference schools coached by head coaches with proven track records, while Mack has not yet coached his first college basketball game. That can make a lot of difference to 4-Star recruits who have aspirations of playing at the next level.
How sad. Oompa loompa had 3/4 years to recruit for '09 and all he could come up with is a "BWS" like K. Mack only has 2 months to recruit from a class that was already committed and he lands someone who is ranked higher in every recruiting service. Now that's funny. Let's hear the triumvirate spin on this!

BTW, '10 is shaping up to be the best class X has ever had on paper.

Chris Mack made prop look like even more of a douchebag than usual, and that's saying a lot. I'm glad you quoted him before he tried to go back and delete his stupidity.

I'm liking Mack more by the day.

So are the Flyer Faithful.

In the history of Xavier University, Jeff Robinson is quite likely the very first player to average less than 4 points per game as a high school senior and receive a basketball scholarship.

But...but....but Mack can't recruit! Oh wait, Mack has already done more recruiting, with NO head coaching experience, in two months than any other first year coach in the league.
