Former Indiana Commit Ron Patterson Getting Looks (Adam Zagoria, ZagBlogs - September 15, 2012)
Ron Patterson is no longer going to Indiana, but he will end up playing Division 1 basketball somewhere next year.

"Xavier is going to meet with his parents at their home Monday," Smith said. "Providence comes on Wednesday. And Kansas State next week as well."

"Pitt is very interested."

Update on Former Broad Ripple Guard Ron Patterson (The Indianapolis Star - September 18, 2012)
Brewster Academy (N.H.) coach Jason Smith said the former Broad Ripple star and Indiana recruit has impressed the coaches who have been on campus the past two weeks.

Smith said Villanova offered Patterson a scholarship on Tuesday night.

Florida State, Providence, SMU, and Xavier have also offered.

His family had in-home visit with Xavier on Monday and will have in-home visits this week with Providence (Wednesday) and Florida State (Thursday).

SMU coach Larry Brown will be on campus Wednesday to meet with Patterson.

Iowa, Marquette, and North Carolina State are other schools that have shown interest.

"Some schools are asking if he plans to sign in the fall or spring," Smith said. "That’s something he’ll have to talk about with his family."

Muddy’s Observation:
(1) Chris Mack’s worst recruiting nightmare these days must be the possibility that he cannot land a 'quality' 2013 SG due to the commitment of Chris Thomas, and then Chris Thomas either does not qualify academically to play at Xavier next year, or Thomas opts to declare early for the June 2013 NBA Draft (which he is eligible for).

(2) If Ron Patterson does commit to Xavier, he will be the third freshman shooting guard on Xavier's Roster next season. Next year, none of Xavier's shooting guards will have the opportunity to learn from, or practice against, an upperclassman SG, which is very important to a freshman's development as an NCAA Division I player.

(3) Observation (2) may have been a significant factor in SG Miles Overton's decision to choose Wake Forest over Xavier last night.

(4) It appears that the reason Chris Mack is attempting to land a third freshman shooting guard for Xavier's 2013-14 Roster is the very real possibility that Chris Thomas does not show up at Xavier next season (for one reason or another), which would leave freshman Myles Davis as Xavier's only SG next season.

(5) Ron Patterson may not decide his college choice until spring 2013, which would give BCS-conference coaches another season to evaluate and offer Patterson.

I was actually going to bring this up the other day. Mack is in a pickle at this point at the SG position moving forward. IF Thomas arrives, all is well as he is that good of a player. The question becomes, if Patterson commits, that adds ANOTHER SG to the team with Thomas and M. Davis. 3 in the same class. Mack on the other hand really is in no position to turn down Patterson considering that Thomas might be iffy to show up at all. I think if you're X, you have to take a dice roll and take Patterson. The scenario also might change how M. Davis feels about X if Thomas and Patterson both show up.

I don't think the issue is going to be, "can X land a quality SG for 2013"...they technically already have, an all world one in Thomas and what appears to be a quality one in M. Davis....the question is, will all 3 still be there this time next year or does the perfect storm happen again and only M. Davis is still there?

If Thomas is really as good as advertised, and he might actually go to the NBA next year, then X needs another SG for sure. Even if Thomas comes, and is close to that level, you might also assume he'd only stay one year. So you still need another SG.

But I can see us losing out on the higher level guys with Thomas staring at them from the assumed roster. Tough situation to recruit.

Re: Xavier recruiting

Patterson can play SF. Kid has very long arms and is said to be a great defender. The A10 is a guard driven league and I'm sure Mack realizes that and is trying to get as many quality kids as he can. I can easily envision a "3 guard" offense with 6'3 Semaj, 6'5 Thomas, and 6'3 Patterson. If Mack can land Peters or Jordan then that just adds more height at the guards.

Re: Xavier recruiting

Muddy actually brings up a good point about the recruiting of a SG. The problem is that a Muddy post is like an Oliver Stone movie on steroids , with ample sides caffeine and amphetamines ("So, Oliver, would you like a plot with that conspiracy theory?"). That said, I agree that there are ways around the issue, as A10fan2 presents (3 guard lineup), but it is a valid point nevertheless: it is something Mack has to "guard" against (pardon the pun...haha) or at least deal with. It could affect the recruiting, depending on how well he can sell the ways around Chris Thomas issue.

In other words, how successful Chris Mack might be in deceiving a HS Class of 2013 SG prospect into believing that SG # 1 6'-5" Chris Thomas (who aspires to playing SG in the NBA sooner rather than later) would be happy to step aside and play SF at Xavier so that Chris Mack can accomodate SG # 30 as Xavier's shooting guard.

Right. That's gonna happen.

Re: Xavier recruiting

Wow, Muddy, you are one arrogant Mo-Fo. It must be nice to know so-god-damned much about everything. It's also nice to see your unbiased view that convincing a kid to come to a good school, with a good program, with proven results of getting a player to the next level must be a con job, if that player might have to spend a year working for the good of the team...blah blah blah....why am i even talking about this? You're truly one of a kind, Muddy (fingers crossed)! It's also been a pleasure to continually be misrepresented by the way you use quotes of my posts. To know how you twist my words to suit your purposes, is all the proof one would need that despite a valid point raised, you generally cannot be trusted. Thanks for the continued proof of your idiocy.

The 3 guard line up can work. Turns out CJ was no taller the 6'4". Not sure how we miss measured him by 2-3".

I don't expect Chris Thomas to ever play a game in an X uniform, and I'm guessing that's what Mack is insinuating to recruits as well.

Yes ==> click here.

BTW, Xavier fans should be careful about what they wish for.

It appears that Ron Patterson has the same issues as Chris Thomas ==> Ron Patterson - September 25, 2012.

Patterson looks to have a sweet stroke and a ton of athleticism.

Ron comes on about 4:17 mark

Would love to add this kid. It will be great to watch him dunkin' on the next BWS. Check out the end of the video.

Another updated recruiting team ranking and Mack and Co. are holding on at #20 despite only one commitment. Kid must be very, very good. Curious to see what the next committ will move them to.

One thing I have to say about X recruiting ranking hysteria over the last 3-4 years: Wait until they are eligible.
