Dayton Flyers 2009-10 Depth Chart with 2008-09 Scoring (5 Seniors):

PG: London Warren (6-0 Sr./ 4.1 PPG), Rob Lowery (6-2 Sr./ 7.5 PPG)
SG: Marcus Johnson (6-3 Sr./ 11.8 PPG), Mickey Perry (6-2 Sr./ 4.6 PPG), Paul Williams (6-4 Soph./ 2.2 PPG)
SF: Chris Wright (6-8 Jr./ 13.3 PPG), Chris Johnson (6-5 Soph./ 6.3 PPG), Luke Fabrizius (6-9 Soph./ 4.3 PPG)
PF: Devin Searcy (6-10 Jr./ 2.8 PPG), Josh Benson (6-10 Fr./ DNP)
C: Kurt Huelsman (6-10 Sr./ 3.6 PPG), Matt Kavanaugh (6-10 Fr./ DNP)

Brian Gregory has 6 scholarships available for the 2010 Class (the 5 present seniors plus Stephen Thomas’ scholarship) and the following wish list:

1 point guard
1 shooting guard
2 combo guards
1 combo forward
Adreian Payne

The point guard scholarship went to Juwan Staten.

At the present time, Brandon Spearman and Jalen Steele are the front-runners for the shooting guard scholarship.

Both combo guard scholarships have now been awarded, the first going to Drake transfer Josh Parker, who will be a junior in 2010-11 (Josh Parker video) and the second to Jesse Berry.

The combo forward scholarship went to Ralph Hill, who appears to be a slightly bigger version of multi-skilled, athletic Chris Johnson. Brian Gregory was in early on both Ralph Hill and Chris Johnson, and both flew under the national radar (i.e. head coaches of BCS-conference schools and the basketball recruiting websites) before committing to Dayton. As you recall, Chris Johnson was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie team in March 2009, which was quite an accomplishment for a reserve SF playing behind Chris Wright. At 6’-5” Chris Johnson is quite capable of playing the SG position against opponents’ taller SGs. Brian Gregory is very keen to stock his roster with players who can play 2 positions – “interchangeable parts” as he calls them – and is doing a great job of so.

The sixth and final scholarship available for 2010 is being held for PF/C Adreian Payne, who may or may not commit to Dayton. As many of you know already, Payne is still very raw, but has incredible upside potential. If Payne commits elsewhere, Brian Gregory may offer it to another 2010 prospect or hold the scholarship for a 2011 prospect.

It is relevant to ask how much UD’s recruiting has improved since Brian Gregory was named head coach of the Dayton Flyers.

This question is best answered by looking at the last two recruiting classes that were signed by Oliver Purnell before he left for Clemson:

University of Dayton Prospects: HS Class of 2002 (Scout.com)

University of Dayton Prospects: HS Class of 2003 (Scout.com)

If Chris Wright has a monster season in 2009-10 (i.e. 18 PPG, 8 RPG, 50% FGs, and 40% from 3-point range) he may well forego his senior year at UD and head to the NBA a year early as a first-round draft pick. However, given the very strong field of players who will likely be in the 2010 NBA Draft, coupled with Derrick Brown's disappointing # 40 selection in the 2009 NBA Draft, I consider it far more likely that Wright will play his senior year at UD.

If Wright does leave early for the NBA, the Flyers will still have junior Chris Johnson, junior Luke Fabrizius, and freshman Ralph Hill available to man the 3-spot in 2010-11. This means that Brian Gregory will not find himself in Chris Mack's situation of having to waste a valuable scholarship on a career pine-jockey in a desperate attempt to fill a hole in the roster after the unexpected departure of the team's best player.

Dayton has not passed Xavier as a program yet, but as each season goes by, Brian Gregory has been building a stronger roster and closing the gap between the Flyers and the Musketeers. I believe it is likely that the Flyers will win the Atlantic 10 Conference this season and continue to improve relative to Xavier and the rest of the Atlantic 10 basketball teams. However, that is only one man's humble opinion. As always, we'll see . . .

Don't know if anyone watched Staten on ESPNU last night or night but at the high school level, and no matter what the competition (i.e. the 6th ranked team St Patricks) last night, he's unguardable. He can break down any defender and leave them at the foul line. Mentioned on UDPride from some posters who have watched UD basketball for 30+ years that UD has never brought in a guard of his caliber. High expectations for sure.

#386 ·
Staten is legit, and looks like he's growing into a very good PG, instead of just a very good player. Heading to Oak Hill was the best thing to happen to his game.

#388 ·
It doesn't matter who you recruit - Gregory is only going to get about 60% of their potential out of them!

#390 ·
Geesh Muddy, remove Jesse Berry's balls from your mouth for a second and take a breath.

You're building this kid up so high it's ridiculous.

We all heard about Benson and Kavanaugh and they haven't exactly been the impact players you thought they would be.

At least let Berry get on campus and actually play a college game before you ask him to marry you.

#392 ·
I'm guessing that Berry is going to have the toughest acclimation to being a Flyer. He isn't particularly big, so defense is going to require effort on the court and in the weight room. He is also probably third on the depth chart at both point guard and shooting guard, so playing time might be hard to earn.

Since I've posted some concerns I have about Jesse Berry, I thought I'd update this thread with a very encouraging quote I read tonight from his high school head coach. Berry's team won a big game tonight in which he scored 25 points (including two free throws in the last 12 seconds to ice it) and also set the all-time scoring record for his high school.

Said his coach Scott Bunnell on Berry making those free throws:

"He is that kind of kid that makes them," Bunnell said. "You tell a person's character by how he deals with adversity. He has had adversity. He understands that, and he has dealt with it.

"He has responded by showing character and toughness. I can't say enough. Those two senior starters -- Jesse and Roddy -- have won over 80 percent of their games. It has been an honor to coach those two guys. I hope I get to coach them for quite a few more games."

Paris, thank you very much for your informative contributions to this thread.

In the February 20th article you linked, I also like this quote by Jesse's teammate Nick Stacy.

Stacy is extremely happy for Berry. "That's amazing to score that many points and be the all-time leading scorer," Stacy said. "It's amazing to be a part of a team that Jesse is on.

He is a special player."
Indeed.

I'm very pleased that Jesse wants to be a Flyer. It looks like a win-win for both.

Ralph Hill hadd an uncharacteristically low-scoring night in the last regular-season game of his high school basketball career. However, the game was a blow-out from the beginning, so it is likely that his coach was saving him for the State Tournament and giving his teammates some more game experience before the State Tournament begins.

Ralph Hill is by far the best player on Westerville North and there is no good reason to risk an injury to him during a blow-out win.

Ralph Hill hadd an uncharacteristically low-scoring night in the last regular-season game of his high school basketball career.
Ralph Hill also became his high school's all-time leading scorer in their recent loss to Westerville South. He has scored more than 1,328 points (not sure of his current tally) in his career.

Highlights of the game in which Hill broke the scoring record can be found at: http://blip.tv/file/3208718

Oliver scored 15 of his team's 21 points in the fourth quarter. Nice job by a player rounding back into form after an injury.

I haven't seen video of Devin since his growth spurt (he grew from 6'5" to 6'7"+ in the past year). Will be very interesting to see if he can become a big man with guard skills or if his slight frame will hold him back. He is very young (just turned 17 last fall, I think) so he could have real upside physically. Best case scenario would be if he develops like Gordon Hayward at Butler or Landry Fields at Stanford (6'7" SF, candidate for Pac-10 POY).

Westerville North played again last night at New Albany HS. The game was originally scheduled for February 9th, but had been postponed due to snow. It is now obvious why Ralph Hill's coach was resting him on Friday night - there was another game on Saturday night against a better opponent.

Kalamazoo Central 74, Loy Norrix 70 (Kalamazoo Gazette, February 20, 2010)

The Maroon Giants escaped Quiring Gymnasium with a 74-70 victory, in which they dominated the first nine minutes of the second half before Loy Norrix's furious rally made a 20-point game interesting for the full-house crowd of about 2,400.

K-Central (16-2), ranked fifth in Class A, also left with its 10th consecutive win, seventh straight victory in the series with the Knights, and fourth Southwestern Michigan Athletic Conference Central Division crown in as many seasons.

"It was a good atmosphere," said Maroon Giants senior wing Devin Oliver, whose team improves to 7-0 in the division. "I didn't get to play when we played them at home, so this was going to be the last time I got to play at Norrix. I just wanted to go out there with a lot of emotion and intensity."

Oliver, a wiry 6-foot-7 left-hander who missed seven games this season with a foot injury, appeared back in true form with a game-high 24 points, 11 rebounds, and five steals. The all-stater erupted in the second quarter for 12 of his team's 18 points, featuring slashes to the bucket and a pair of 3-pointers from the corner, as the Giants built a 34-29 halftime lead.

Westerville North wins on Nettles' 48-foot shot (Dispatch - Feb. 21, 2010)

Brad Nettles made a 48-foot shot as time expired in overtime, handing visiting Westerville North a 54-51 victory over New Albany in a nonleague boys basketball game last night.

Ralph Hill, who led Westerville North (17-3) with 21 points, made a three-pointer to tie it at 51 with 25 seconds left.

Playing for a final shot, New Albany (13-7) committed a turnover with four seconds left to set up Nettles' shot.

Forget the drivel Muddy posts on this board about Xavier, but isn't it becoming clear that all this very specific recruiting information on Dayton, which at this point can only be interesting to Dayton fans, should be held to being posted on UD's board?

Seriously, this stuff is of interest to UD fans at this point. Any of these players will want to be understood more by other A10 fans once they wear a UD uniform, but they're not there yet.

#404 ·
In all honesty Dash, the thread is titled "Dayton Recruiting". It's pretty easy to avoid if you don't want to read it. Methinks your desire to read and respond to everything Muddy posts is way too strong. Just don't open the thread. It's clearly labeled, you know what you're going to see.

#405 · (Edited)
Adam, I have Muddy on block. As Dayton continued to tank in recent weeks I took some shots at him because it was easy to do, given his idiotic posting history. My focus is on Richmond, the A10 reg season crown for a 4th year in a row, AC, and tournament seeding, all in that order.

As far as this thread is concerned, believe me when I tell you that I am finished with it. I stopped by in an effort to make a suggestion.

I was actually trying to do some of you guys a favor. UD is failing this league again - at this very late point in the season. That is particularly bad given the pre-season expectations for your team. Obviously, it is a free country and you guys are free to post anything you want. You can even resort to past posting habits: 'wait till next year'; 'check this recruit out - he's the one....'; and on and on. It's just that everyone else around here seems to be focused on the finish line for the '09/10 season.

Yes, the thread is titled "Dayton Recruiting." And here it sits on the A10 board, closing in on 30 pages, discussing the high school achievements of kids that haven't made it into a UD jersey at this point. High school game performance here and high school game performance there and all that will translate to the next level. Fine, sure it will. Everyone here wants to read about that.

I'm not telling you to shut it down because I talked myself into believing that I'm a board policeman. I'm suggesting that you guys are primarily carrying on a Dayton discussion on the conference board, that it probably has gone on too long - on this board - and at a time when your program actually isn't a shining light around here.

Just my opinion. If you want to continue to discuss the high school achievements of Dayton recruits on the A10 board as we close in on Atlantic City and the Tournament, knock yourself out. I came back to add that Dayton obviously isn't finished yet this year and can very well still control its destiny. If you want to talk about recruits and high school performance statistics now, then fine, but you guys still have plenty of life left. Can you talk about both? Sure. It's just that most programs around here seem to be discussing their recruits on their respective boards at this time, when they're discussing their recruits.

Oak Hill Academy Defeats Benedictine 79-65 (Richmond Times-Dispatch - Feb. 28, 2010)

Benedictine coach Sean McAloon thinks Oak Hill was good preparation for next week's VIS tournament.

"It's a loss, but let's be realistic. Those are some of the five best players that they have [in the] the country," McAloon said. "If you go out there and see how you stack up against the best, I don't think it hurts you as you get ready for a state tournament."

Massey Cancer Center Classic (Oak Hill Academy)

The Massey Cancer Center Classic is pleased to announce its inaugural game, with Oak Hill Academy facing off against Benedictine for round #3 in an effort to promote the VCU Massey Cancer Center, while at the same time determining the premier private school in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The match-up features the #1 team in the Virginia Independent School poll (Benedictine) against ESPN’s #7 team in the country (Oak Hill Academy).

One of the most storied programs in high school basketball, Oak Hill had three alumni playing in the 2010 NBA All-Star Game: Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Durant, and Rajon Rondo.

This year, the Warriors come to Richmond with a plethora of talent, led by McDonald’s All-American SG Doron Lamb (Uncommitted), 6’7 PF Roscoe Smith (UConn), 5’10 PG Juwan Staten (Dayton), 6’2 G Pe’Shon Howard (Maryland), and 6’10 C Baye MoussaKeita (Syracuse).

Thank you very much, FlyingElvis.

High School Basketball State Tournament time is here.

Jesse Berry and Brandon Spearman led their respective teams to wins last night. Ralph Hill's Westerville North team plays this afternoon and Jesse Berry plays again tonight.

Jeff's Berry Sets Record in Win over Harrison (jconline - March 6, 2010)

KOKOMO -- Friday night, Harrison's boys basketball team produced the 32-minute effort it lacked in two previous meetings with Lafayette Jeff.

The Bronchos still had an answer for every Raider run.

Jesse Berry became Tippecanoe County's all-time leading scorer with 28 points, and Lafayette Jeff defeated Harrison 60-51 in a Class 4A Kokomo Sectional semifinal at Memorial Gymnasium.

"It's really hard in a season to beat a team three times," said Berry, who added six rebounds and four assists. "We did it, but it was a real tough task. All credit to them; they played their hearts out and made us work all the way down to the stretch. We finally made a run at the end to pull it off."

The Bronchos play Kokomo in tonight's Championship. The host Wildkats, who defeated Logansport 68-52 in the other semifinal, defeated Jeff 75-72 at Crawley Center on Dec. 19.

Berry opened the final period by driving the baseline for a layup, the first of five straight Broncho points.

Berry's ability to penetrate led to a 7-for-8 free throw performance in the fourth quarter and fueled a 21-point second half. After that layup, Harrison never again possessed the ball within one shot of tying the game.

"They're way bigger than us, so we knew we couldn't jump with them," Berry said. "Our focus was just to box them out and keep Cutter and Banker out of the lane, so our guards could come clean it up."

Berry tied Central Catholic grad Kristof Kendrick's county record of 1,481 points with a free throw late in the first half. He emphatically broke it with a steal and breakaway dunk with 4:41 remaining in the third quarter.

"I'm happy for it, but right now I'm focused on sectionals," said Berry, who has signed to play at Dayton. "I want to win this; I want to get out of here. Scoring record, I'm not worried about it. I just want to win."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Simeon 61, Argo 39 (Sun-Times - March 5, 2010)

The Wolverines won 61-39 over the host Argonauts in a Class 4A Regional Final.

The Wolverines (20-9) started upping the tempo and wore down Argo. Simeon reeled off an 8-0 run to start the fourth quarter and take a 45-33 lead.

A key play came when Brandon Spearman benefitted from an offensive rebound off a missed free throw to connect on a three-pointer to make the score 42-33.

"The play of the game came when Spearman hit that three," Argo coach Pat Maietta said. "We were tired and sloppy in the fourth quarter and they exerted their will."

Simeon held Argo to 1-for-13 shooting from the field in the fourth quarter while the Wolverines shot 84 percent mostly on breakaway layups and alley-oop baskets.

Darien Walker led Simeon with 12 points and nine rebounds. Brandon Spearman and Rashawn McElrath added 10 each.

Berry's 33 Carry Lafayette Jeff (jconline - Sunday March 7, 2010)

Jesse Berry poured in 33 points Saturday night, and Lafayette Jeff rallied for a 67-61 victory over the host Wildkats in the Class 4A Kokomo Sectional Championship at Memorial Gymnasium.

"This is what we've been working for all year," said Berry, who totaled 61 points in two sectional games. "We want to advance as far as we can in the tournament, and this is the start. We've been working all year, and it paid off tonight."

Kokomo (16-6) led 50-42 with seven minutes left after Armon Bridgeforth hit a 3-pointer. Berry responded with 15 points in the final 6:36, including a driving layup with 3:40 left that put Jeff in front for good.

The Bronchos' all-time scoring leader also scored 15 points in the second quarter after a scoreless opening period.

"I think what Jesse has shown is that he's not just a great scorer, he's a great player," Bunnell said. "He was setting guys up. Late in the game, we spread the floor and he has great concentration, makes his free throws. He just does what he's supposed to do."

Three straight 3-pointers fueled Berry's second quarter outburst
, which propelled the Bronchos to a 30-28 halftime lead. With the Wildkats forced out of their zone defense in the fourth, Berry attacked the basket, converting a 3-point play with 2:10 left that put Jeff up 61-56.

Berry hit 5 of 12 3-pointers and 8 of 9 free throws.

"Berry is a Division I basketball player," Kokomo coach Brian McCauley said of the Dayton recruit. "He's a great slasher and got to the free throw line.

Kalamazoo Central Wins over Benton Harbor in Class A District Opener (March 9, 2010)

The nicked-up Maroon Giants weren't perfect, but their pressure defense and open-court, quick-score ability inflicted more than enough damage against Benton Harbor in a 64-48 district-opening victory at Portage Central's gym.

K-Central (20-1) will try to beat Loy Norrix (14-7), a 68-58 overtime winner over Mattawan in the nightcap, for a third time this season when the rivals meet in Wednesday's 8 p.m. District Semifinal.

The third-ranked Maroon Giants, who lost in last year's state championship game, overcame a bit of a slow start Monday and took control with a 12-0 run over the final two minutes of the first quarter.

Buchanan scored three buckets during the spurt and Devin Oliver had two, including an authoritative, two-handed dunk [see photo in linked article].

The 6-foot-7 Oliver finished with a game-high 22 points, six rebounds and three steals for the Giants, who led 19-6 at the end of the first and maintained a double-digit margin the rest of the way.

Simeon Tames Lions Early, Rolls to Win (Sun-Times - March 9, 2010)

It was a magical season in LaGrange, but Tuesday in the Class 4A sectional semifinal visiting Simeon proved that the Lions’ 26-1 record was more mirage than proof of a powerhouse. The Wolverines outclassed Lyons from the opening tip, coasting to an easy 65-35 win.

Senior Brandon Spearman led the Wolverines (21-9) with 13 points and six rebounds.

Simeon will face the winner of today’s Bogan-Mount Carmel game in the sectional final on Friday.

Simeon's Brandon Spearman moves to the hoop.

Kalamazoo Central Overwhelm Loy Norrix in District Semifinal (March 11, 2010)

On the strength of an explosive, four-minute span during the second quarter, K-Central by halftime matched Loy Norrix's offensive output for the entire game in an 86-52 Class A District Semifinal victory Wednesday night at Portage Central.

The Maroon Giants made more field goals in the first half than Norrix did all game, and their bench outscored the Knights', 44-26.

Michigan Mr. Basketball finalist Devin Oliver (seven rebounds) and his K-Central senior classmate, Dyland Hughes, each scored 15 points — all in the first three quarters.
