Dayton Flyers 2009-10 Depth Chart with 2008-09 Scoring (5 Seniors):

PG: London Warren (6-0 Sr./ 4.1 PPG), Rob Lowery (6-2 Sr./ 7.5 PPG)
SG: Marcus Johnson (6-3 Sr./ 11.8 PPG), Mickey Perry (6-2 Sr./ 4.6 PPG), Paul Williams (6-4 Soph./ 2.2 PPG)
SF: Chris Wright (6-8 Jr./ 13.3 PPG), Chris Johnson (6-5 Soph./ 6.3 PPG), Luke Fabrizius (6-9 Soph./ 4.3 PPG)
PF: Devin Searcy (6-10 Jr./ 2.8 PPG), Josh Benson (6-10 Fr./ DNP)
C: Kurt Huelsman (6-10 Sr./ 3.6 PPG), Matt Kavanaugh (6-10 Fr./ DNP)

Brian Gregory has 6 scholarships available for the 2010 Class (the 5 present seniors plus Stephen Thomas’ scholarship) and the following wish list:

1 point guard
1 shooting guard
2 combo guards
1 combo forward
Adreian Payne

The point guard scholarship went to Juwan Staten.

At the present time, Brandon Spearman and Jalen Steele are the front-runners for the shooting guard scholarship.

Both combo guard scholarships have now been awarded, the first going to Drake transfer Josh Parker, who will be a junior in 2010-11 (Josh Parker video) and the second to Jesse Berry.

The combo forward scholarship went to Ralph Hill, who appears to be a slightly bigger version of multi-skilled, athletic Chris Johnson. Brian Gregory was in early on both Ralph Hill and Chris Johnson, and both flew under the national radar (i.e. head coaches of BCS-conference schools and the basketball recruiting websites) before committing to Dayton. As you recall, Chris Johnson was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie team in March 2009, which was quite an accomplishment for a reserve SF playing behind Chris Wright. At 6’-5” Chris Johnson is quite capable of playing the SG position against opponents’ taller SGs. Brian Gregory is very keen to stock his roster with players who can play 2 positions – “interchangeable parts” as he calls them – and is doing a great job of so.

The sixth and final scholarship available for 2010 is being held for PF/C Adreian Payne, who may or may not commit to Dayton. As many of you know already, Payne is still very raw, but has incredible upside potential. If Payne commits elsewhere, Brian Gregory may offer it to another 2010 prospect or hold the scholarship for a 2011 prospect.

It is relevant to ask how much UD’s recruiting has improved since Brian Gregory was named head coach of the Dayton Flyers.

This question is best answered by looking at the last two recruiting classes that were signed by Oliver Purnell before he left for Clemson:

University of Dayton Prospects: HS Class of 2002 (Scout.com)

University of Dayton Prospects: HS Class of 2003 (Scout.com)

If Chris Wright has a monster season in 2009-10 (i.e. 18 PPG, 8 RPG, 50% FGs, and 40% from 3-point range) he may well forego his senior year at UD and head to the NBA a year early as a first-round draft pick. However, given the very strong field of players who will likely be in the 2010 NBA Draft, coupled with Derrick Brown's disappointing # 40 selection in the 2009 NBA Draft, I consider it far more likely that Wright will play his senior year at UD.

If Wright does leave early for the NBA, the Flyers will still have junior Chris Johnson, junior Luke Fabrizius, and freshman Ralph Hill available to man the 3-spot in 2010-11. This means that Brian Gregory will not find himself in Chris Mack's situation of having to waste a valuable scholarship on a career pine-jockey in a desperate attempt to fill a hole in the roster after the unexpected departure of the team's best player.

Dayton has not passed Xavier as a program yet, but as each season goes by, Brian Gregory has been building a stronger roster and closing the gap between the Flyers and the Musketeers. I believe it is likely that the Flyers will win the Atlantic 10 Conference this season and continue to improve relative to Xavier and the rest of the Atlantic 10 basketball teams. However, that is only one man's humble opinion. As always, we'll see . . .

I guess I am a lot older and more mellow in these cases, but I think Gregory wants to provide the mentorship this kid obviously needs. Kudos to BG for this! If some one would have trailed me with a cell phone that recorded my every deed when I was this kid's age, I doubt I could have won an academic scholarship or worked for the government for 40 years or convinced anyone to marry me ever. Kids need adult direction at that age, and if they accept it, things have a way of turning out all right.

That is why everyone should relax on this stuff and stop trying to present a holier than thou approach. It can happen to any kid at the most awkward time. We should all be rooting for these kids to put it all together (more so in their life than on the court).

#487 ·
This is the way I feel as well. If I were BG I would be concerned about the pattern of poor choices and I would definitely have a heart to heart with the kid regarding what expectations were if he was going to play at Dayton.

I don't necessarily think that this is a deal breaker. I did some stupid crap when I was in High School and I went to college and turned out fine.

#489 ·
This is pitiful. You should just go back to the Xavier threads and make some more excuses. I'm sure it is just bad luck that Berry got in trouble anyways...

First of all, why can't we talk about a Dayton recruit on a Dayton recruiting thread without you bringing up Xavier recruits and alleged incidents that happend 4 years ago? How is talking about CJ Anderson on-topic in a Dayton recruiting thread? CJ Anderson has nothing to do with Dayton recruits or recruiting. You are always asking people to stay on topic and then to post rambling links to Xavier's Newswire from 3 years ago in a Dayton recruiting thread? What a spaz...

Don't you always claim to have A10fan2 on ignore?

Let me save everyone the trouble of wondering what is going to happen here:

Muddy is going to post a flurry of off-topic posts rationalizing Jesse Berry's arrest. There will be 2-3 consecutive posts at a time. Questionable sources will be linked. It will be a veritable orgy of misinformation and spin.

Then when people respond Muddy will claim to have them on ignore. He doesn't really though. He just claims to. He won't address any specific points with thoughts of his own. Just links to other people's thoughts.

Eventually Muddy will get embarassed and stop posting in this thread for several days.

Repeat.

#494 ·
Don't you always claim to have A10fan2 on ignore?
Indeed.

I haven't seen anything that A10fan2 has posted since November 2008, except for what has been quoted by posters that I don't have on my Ignore List.

I was referring to Blue Dog's Post #481 at the top of this page.

Muddy is going to . . .
You have no idea of what I am going to do, so why bother typing your uninformed guess ?

#492 ·
I think most coaches saw this coming. Jesse Berry (for being a top 100 or close to top 100 recruit)did not have a lot of choices of good schools who wanted to offer him a scholorship. I think we are probably seeing why now.

I hope the kid gets his life straight. He has a lot of talent, it would be a shame to see it wasted like Lloyd Price wasted his.

I think Jesse Berry is a bit of a risk, but I'm willing to let the legal process run its course. Maybe his story is fact, and the arrest was really nothing more than the standard operating procedure in domestic violence cases. I don't know. I do know that people that make good decisions rarely get arrested for anything. I also know that his first arrest came when he was a minor for stealing an i-phone case. Well crap, that's not half as bad as some of the stuff 17 year old me did, and I never came close to an arrest.

It is what it is, I guess. If BG chose to cut him loose, I wouldn't care. I'm also not up in arms if he stays.

Kevin Waymire

This message is hidden because Kevin Waymire is on your ignore list.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This joker is just another low-life refugee from Musketeer Madness who joined the A10 MB for the sole purpose of stalking me, or far more likely, he is one of the existing low-life Xavier posters who has re-registered with a new screen name – quite possibly Blue Dog.

Kevin Waymire has made 3 posts so far, all in which he has called me names, and none of his 3 posts have contributed anything to the topic of Xavier recruiting, which is typical Xavier fan bahavior.

In his 3 posts, Kevin Waymire has posted nothing worth reading.

You know what that means - Kevin is the newest addition to Muddy's Ignore List.

Have a seat on the bench and join your fellow worthless posters:

Kevin Waymire – Stalker and harasser. Posts nothing worth reading.

If it's proven that he roughed up a girl, then he's gone plain and simple. If not, then its up to BG to decide if he'll be a good fit for the program. He obviously has a bit of an attitude issue on top of his legal problems (His quote in the DDN news is absolutely priceless) but attitudes can get adjusted.

The referendum on XU has been good reading as well. How did I know that's where this thread would end up? It's almost as if guys like Sammy Smith, Norman Plummer, Satn King and Chris Spears never played for UD. And the story of BG busting London Warren with a hooker in NYC is fantastic.

Muddy - What part of Jesse "The Outlaw" Berry
has been arrested TWICE in the past eight months
don't you understand?

Can this kid get straightened out?
Sure, but to continually defend his behavior and
actions like you do is laughable.

He's been arrested twice and suspended and benched a
few times as well.

It'll be interesting to hear what Gregory has to say,
if anything, about Berry.

As a Dayton fan, you have to be concerned with this kid,
and if you're not, you are blinded by your red and blue
colored glasses.

Don't take the holier then thou road now X fans....where were you X Factor when X player's transgressions come to light. Here's who was logged on this thread about 2 min ago before I logged on. REF, Smails, X Factor, Xudash, and Xu95. That's it. Don't act X fans like if this were an X recruit that you'd throw him under the bus. How'd Crawford work out for you?? Just fine. How many transgressions did Lavender commit while at X that we don't know about. We do know he got benched and had a pow wow with the fam and coach and that he got arrested pretty much as his career ended. Point is, it's easier to control these kids once they get to campus and to even "cover up" some of the minor things that late teens do, like we all did.

Sounds like Berry isn't going anywhere...like Adam said, I wouldn't shed a tear or lose sleep if he did leave, and I would same the same thing for ANY UD player who kept getting in trouble. If he's here, I'll be the first to hope he succeeds.

#502 ·
I live in a glass house. I honestly don't care about the morality of any recruit signed by other A-10 schools. Nada, zero, zip. I only concern myself with UMass.

If another program thinks a kid has grades to do well and that such player will reflect well on the school, well, it's the business of that school. If a school and a coach thinks they can reform a somewhat troubled player, good luck.

I don't know these kids and I prefer to leave judgments up to the coaches, administrators - and the NCAA Clearinghouse.

#503 ·
gotta say, it sounds like it's really not a big deal. Hopefully this kid can straighten out his life - if not, i'm sure Huggins could USE him.

Really guys, he f'd up. It's poor. But, can he learn from his mistakes? Can he please not be judged on an internet board by people that don't even know him?

Booze, the thread reads well without having to read Muddy's posts. Did anyone think Muddy would do anything other than defend him and rip on X in the process? Really?

#506 ·
I fail to see what X or an X player has to do with this situation.

And WH, we (the fans) pay lots of money to support our program. When I stand (or write a check) and applaud these kids before every game, I would like to think that I have good reasons to do so. And though I'm not part of any administration ,I feel I have every right to voice an opinion.

I was a Flyer fan before this administration and I will be here long after these guys are gone. How the fans feel about their players in the program is important.

And I don't need the Clearinghouse or a Judge to see that this kid is trouble and I wouldn't trust him.

Why? Because he's given me good reasons not too.

#508 ·
I saw that, my only objection is with the last line.

I don't know these kids and I prefer to leave judgments up to the coaches, administrators - and the NCAA Clearinghouse.

To me that states the following-- unless you know the kid or all the rules you may not, or should not, have an opinion---that I disagree with.

I hear this alot from some Dayton fans. I hear it inregards to Brian Gregory on many different subjects.

Right now the koolaid drinkers @ Dayton are swearing to be loyal,(whatever that is) to whatever decision the coaching staff makes.

Personally, I wouldn't allow the kid to associate with one of mine.

#510 ·
I don't care either way what peoples opinion is about this kid really. We are all looking at conjecture and guesses, without really knowing what did or did not happen.

If the midget and daytons administration feel the guy is clean enough to represent their school, so be it. Let the system work and see what comes of it, that's my say.

What is REALLY funny though is how there is a double standard from certain dayton posters concerning what a potential dayton recruit is being accused of, and how they harped on pretty much the same things when it was X on the recieving end. What a group of loons.

#511 ·
You are free to have an opinion and judge any recruit you want, especially those of your own alma mater. I have not suggested otherwise, tman.

I think my post was clear. I mind my own business when it comes to other team’s recruits. I personally see no need to comment. To my mind, such commentary merely reflects how high each poster thinks he can get on his own horse.

I only judge recruits at UMass, though I’ve rarely found the need to do so. Derek Kellogg was hired by the UMass AD to run the UMass program. Since my life is busy enough, I leave it to them to determine which players are suitable to play for UMass.

I expect they will show good judgment and make decisions that reflect well on the school.

#513 ·
I frequent 2 bballs sites...flyerhoops.net and here...usually the discussion here on this type subject is the more coherent of the 2...but in this case the more amusing quips are to be found at flyerhoops.net...the posters have pretty much moved past the holier than thou and are now focusing on the lighter side...

Jesse was entertaining his girl friend and x at his apartment...so naturally Flyer fans want to know who is the hotter 1 and Jesse just learned a valuable life lesson about girlfriends and ex girlfriends...they're best left not interacting especially in your presence...

Levity aside there seems to be some risk with Jesse...apparently BG has told him his last day in Indiana is the day he graduates from high school...Jesse will be expected at UD the following day...

#516 ·
Just gotta say, three out of the five that you mentioned were kicked out of the program as a result of their actions or failures to live up to team rules. Transferred. Asked to leave. Whatever you want to call it. The other we got put on probation for. Andy Meyer graduated i think. Can't remember. But let's not act like it's the same thing. Sammy Smith was also asked to leave. (But you could cynically argue it was not because he was crazy, but that he wasn't good.)

Norman Plummer - asked to leave
Chris Spears - asked to leave
Brooks Hall - his dad's loan got us put on probation
Big Dez - asked to leave
Andy Meyer - graduated
Sammy Smith - asked to leave

I think nate green was the guy who was in a fight that you were talking about. He also graduated. But for the most part, dayton has either acted on players who have behaved badly, or been punished for parents/donors who behaved badly. Totally different.

I will agree there is hypocrisy going on though. I have seen lots of it on the UD boards about this kid. I think UD should walk away from him. He will only end up burning us in the end. If it were one incident, fine. But this is two arrests while holding a scholarship offer from UD. Not cool. BG is really sticking his neck out at this point. I hope it pays off for all parties, but my money is against it. I don't really want the kid. He's shown me enough to make me believe that he'll never make it four years at UD.

I've also seen clips of his games where he gives me a bad vibe. IIRC he made a buzzer beater or a big shot and his teams didn't celebrate with him or anything in the clip. Just seemed weird to me. I've just got bad juju going on about this kid. And i have ever since his first arrest. He's also been suspended by his coach/mom before. So it seems to be a fairly obvious pattern of bad decisions going on here. I'm not sure being alone at college for the first time is going to make him a model citizen.

#518 ·
The Brooks Hall situation was a self-report to the NCAA after Mathile disclosed it to the university. It's not like there was a question of the university having any coordination with what Mathile did. It was a booster who didn't know the NCAA rules. That is why there was only a slap on the wrist.

#522 ·
Yeah, i wasn't sure if andy was part of that nate green story or not. It's a bit foggy to me. I do remember that many times after a game we would go straight to tim's and most of the UD team was already there. Marco Pikaar and Meyer were fixtures there. Marco was a chain smoker if i recall correctly, from the Vlade Divac school of fitness.

It's strange that are record was so bad back then.

#525 ·
Chris, wow. I mean wow. You are smarter than that.

I know you are, you proved it during the actual season.

What a complete and utter crap filled post you just wrote, I'm not even going to waste my time proving you wrong over and over and over again, because it's all about deflection on your end.

Astounding. What a joke of a post. You can do better than that idiot filled travishamockery.
