Dayton Flyers 2009-10 Depth Chart with 2008-09 Scoring (5 Seniors):

PG: London Warren (6-0 Sr./ 4.1 PPG), Rob Lowery (6-2 Sr./ 7.5 PPG)
SG: Marcus Johnson (6-3 Sr./ 11.8 PPG), Mickey Perry (6-2 Sr./ 4.6 PPG), Paul Williams (6-4 Soph./ 2.2 PPG)
SF: Chris Wright (6-8 Jr./ 13.3 PPG), Chris Johnson (6-5 Soph./ 6.3 PPG), Luke Fabrizius (6-9 Soph./ 4.3 PPG)
PF: Devin Searcy (6-10 Jr./ 2.8 PPG), Josh Benson (6-10 Fr./ DNP)
C: Kurt Huelsman (6-10 Sr./ 3.6 PPG), Matt Kavanaugh (6-10 Fr./ DNP)

Brian Gregory has 6 scholarships available for the 2010 Class (the 5 present seniors plus Stephen Thomas’ scholarship) and the following wish list:

1 point guard
1 shooting guard
2 combo guards
1 combo forward
Adreian Payne

The point guard scholarship went to Juwan Staten.

At the present time, Brandon Spearman and Jalen Steele are the front-runners for the shooting guard scholarship.

Both combo guard scholarships have now been awarded, the first going to Drake transfer Josh Parker, who will be a junior in 2010-11 (Josh Parker video) and the second to Jesse Berry.

The combo forward scholarship went to Ralph Hill, who appears to be a slightly bigger version of multi-skilled, athletic Chris Johnson. Brian Gregory was in early on both Ralph Hill and Chris Johnson, and both flew under the national radar (i.e. head coaches of BCS-conference schools and the basketball recruiting websites) before committing to Dayton. As you recall, Chris Johnson was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie team in March 2009, which was quite an accomplishment for a reserve SF playing behind Chris Wright. At 6’-5” Chris Johnson is quite capable of playing the SG position against opponents’ taller SGs. Brian Gregory is very keen to stock his roster with players who can play 2 positions – “interchangeable parts” as he calls them – and is doing a great job of so.

The sixth and final scholarship available for 2010 is being held for PF/C Adreian Payne, who may or may not commit to Dayton. As many of you know already, Payne is still very raw, but has incredible upside potential. If Payne commits elsewhere, Brian Gregory may offer it to another 2010 prospect or hold the scholarship for a 2011 prospect.

It is relevant to ask how much UD’s recruiting has improved since Brian Gregory was named head coach of the Dayton Flyers.

This question is best answered by looking at the last two recruiting classes that were signed by Oliver Purnell before he left for Clemson:

University of Dayton Prospects: HS Class of 2002 (Scout.com)

University of Dayton Prospects: HS Class of 2003 (Scout.com)

If Chris Wright has a monster season in 2009-10 (i.e. 18 PPG, 8 RPG, 50% FGs, and 40% from 3-point range) he may well forego his senior year at UD and head to the NBA a year early as a first-round draft pick. However, given the very strong field of players who will likely be in the 2010 NBA Draft, coupled with Derrick Brown's disappointing # 40 selection in the 2009 NBA Draft, I consider it far more likely that Wright will play his senior year at UD.

If Wright does leave early for the NBA, the Flyers will still have junior Chris Johnson, junior Luke Fabrizius, and freshman Ralph Hill available to man the 3-spot in 2010-11. This means that Brian Gregory will not find himself in Chris Mack's situation of having to waste a valuable scholarship on a career pine-jockey in a desperate attempt to fill a hole in the roster after the unexpected departure of the team's best player.

Dayton has not passed Xavier as a program yet, but as each season goes by, Brian Gregory has been building a stronger roster and closing the gap between the Flyers and the Musketeers. I believe it is likely that the Flyers will win the Atlantic 10 Conference this season and continue to improve relative to Xavier and the rest of the Atlantic 10 basketball teams. However, that is only one man's humble opinion. As always, we'll see . . .

Ohio South All-Stars 121, Ohio North All-Stars 113 in OT (Columbus Dispatch – April 19, 2010)

In the Division I-II boys game, the South's balance paid dividends in a 121-113 overtime win over the North. Ohio State-bound Jordan Sibert of Cincinnati Princeton scored 21 points, Geron Johnson of Dayton Dunbar 20, and Ralph Hill of Westerville North 18 to lead the way.

After a shaky start, the Dayton-bound Hill was a force down the stretch. He went 9 of 13 from the field.

Where will G. Johnson end up??? Class of 2010 right? From everything I've read he's a complete player...ESPN has him ranked in their top 100 I believe at 90! Any chance at all he goes JUCO this year and then UD offers next year??? I know he had a run in with the law but that was well over a year ago and he's stayed out of the "bad" news since. Would be a pretty big pickup for anybody really.

Where will Geron Johnson end up ??? Class of 2010 right?
I think that Geron Johnson will need two years at a JUCO to complete his Division I eligibility requirements, but we'll see.

In any event, Brian Gregory is apparently no longer interested in Johnson.

Dunbar Star's Off-court Troubles Giving Division I Hoops Programs Pause (DDN - April 20, 2010)

"I didn’t know how difficult life could be if you make it hard for yourself," said Geron Johnson, who led Dunbar High School to another Division II state title last month.

The slashing 6-foot-3 guard has few weaknesses on the court. He’s a gifted up-tempo finisher, has great shooting range and is a tireless defender.

He was academically ineligible as a sophomore and flamed out with a late-season arrest as a junior.

A decorated senior season notwithstanding, Johnson is the great player that many programs seemingly are after, but with a wait-and-see tag.

That could all change with a productive year of junior college. To do that, he says he’ll have to pass 60 credit hours — 20 hours per quarter — with a GPA near 3.0.

Cincinnati, West Virginia, and Cleveland State have maintained the most interest.
I have my doubts that UD's ship has completely sailed w/ Geron.
To write Geron Johnson to UD off right now would be misguided.
I don't expect that we will ever see Geron wearing the Flyers' Red & Blue.

Players on Junior College teams usually tend to be selfish and take shots they shouldn't (instead of passing the ball to a teammate) because they believe that their ticket to a Division I basketball scholarship is to score as many points as possible in JUCO ball, and thereby get noticed by Division I coaches.

They are quite aware that relatively few JUCO players go on to receive a Division I scholarship, so there is very little incentive for them to put their team ahead of their scoring.

Bad habits from JUCO play usually follow a player to their Division I school, which makes most, if not all JUCO transfers a risk for a Division I coach.

Geron Johnson is a bad apple that I wouldn't want to see wearing the Flyers' Red & Blue.

4-Star SG Geron Johnson (Rivals / JucoJunction profile)

JUCO Standout Geron Johnson Admitted to Memphis, Will Play This Season (Gary Parrish, CBS Sports - August 30, 2012)

Junior college standout Geron Johnson has been admitted to the University of Memphis and is now officially a part of the 2012-13 Tigers after months of questions about whether he'd be allowed to enroll, Memphis coach Josh Pastner told CBS Sports.

Johnson is a heralded combo guard from Dayton whose natural talent is only overshadowed by the amount of off-the-court problems he's experienced since becoming an elite recruit.

He was arrested for attempted burglary during high school and was an academic non-qualifier upon graduation.

He then enrolled at Chipola College in Florida as a freshman but was ultimately dismissed from that team after a marijuana arrest.

He then enrolled at Garden City College in Kansas as a sophomore but was also dismissed from that team and school after multiple legal problems, among them allegations that he stole another student's cell phone.

But Memphis still offered a scholarship.

And Johnson accepted.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some schools will accept any riff-raff that comes along, as long as they are good basketball players.

I'm glad that the University of Dayton isn't one of them.

JUCO for 2 years, then Cleveland State.

Geron is a baller, but unfortunately for UD, academics is not his forte.

I have my doubts that UD's ship has completely sailed w/ Geron. In 2 seasons, UD losses Josh Parker and Paul Williams to graduation, as well as Chris Johnson at the 3 spot. UD is going to need some gaurds in that recruiting class and Geron has the talent to play here. Perhaps a couple of season in JUCO will help him mature and not scare off coaches like he's done in the past.

Of course on the flip side, if he did come in 2 seasons and Staten, Berry, Spearman and Oliver are all still in the program and performing as advertised or better, would you really want to add another kid at the same position as these guys in the same class? Devin Oliver may well redshirt, as some have speculated he will do if/when Wright comes back for his senior season, but 4 gaurds all in 1 class leaves you w/ a huge hole 2 seasons after that. Seems like aside from Geron getting his grades in order and his nose clean, its going to take a transfer from someone in the current class to open up a spot for him on the roster.

#536 ·
To write Geron Johnson to UD off right now would be misguided. Is it a long shot? Sure. But there's no telling what Geron will do both academically and with basketball at a JUCO, and there's also no telling what exactly UD's roster will look like. As of now UD doesn't have a single commit for 2011, let alone 2012. As BG fills the 2011 class and the 2010 class shows what it will be in college, the needs of the roster will change.

#537 · (Edited)
Brian Gregory follows the Tom Izzo philosophy of avoiding JUCO transfers and Division I transfers unless there is a definite and specific need on the Flyers' Roster for an experienced player to fill an unexpected vacancy.

JUCO transfers Andres Sandoval and Thiago Cordeiro did not live up to expectations.

JUCO transfer Rob Lowery came close to meeting expectations his first year at UD, but his shot selection was questionable at times, and he never fully recovered from his serious knee injury, which affected his change-of-speed, lateral quickness, and consequently, his defensive play his senior year.

Division I transfer Mickey Perry, who was a Rivals 150 player in the HS Class of 2005, had his moments, but he did not look like a Rivals 150 player most of the time.

Hopefully, Division I transfer Josh Parker will turn out to be as good as expected and then some.

But I don't expect that we will ever see Geron wearing the Flyers' Red & Blue.

Players on Junior College teams usually tend to be selfish and take shots they shouldn't (instead of passing the ball to a teammate) because they believe that their ticket to a Division I basketball scholarship is to score as many points as possible in JUCO ball, and thereby get noticed by Division I coaches. #540 · (Edited)
You waste a lot of words to say nothing of substance. You say he avoids JUCO and transfers, then name 5 guys that either transferred in from a JUCO or another D-1 school. 5 guys in 7 years? I would say he does the opposite of avoiding JUCOs and transfers, he just hasn't been too good at evaluating which transfers to recruit.

Um, well, "needs" pop up all the time. I don't know if you're aware, but college rosters average about a 25% turnover each year. That means on average about half of UD's roster at the start of next season won't be around in 2 years, and there are no current future verbals. That is why you cannot intelligently say Geron Johnson will never wear a Flyer uniform. There's no telling how much progress he will make in the classroom and in life, and there's no way of knowing what UD's needs will be in two years. BG only lost interest when it became obvious that Geron wouldn't qualify for the 2010 class. Little bit of inside info here...Geron is the #1 reason why it took so long to offer Devin Oliver and why they backed off of Jalen Steele so early. If Geron would have even qualified as a Prop 48 exception, he likely would have been at UD next year. That's a fact.

It's not that hard. No need to waste valuable words.

Any of you UD fans know anything about Ann Arbor Huron SF Dante Williams?
Michigan HS Class of 2011 Prospects (ESPN/Scouts Inc.)

SG # 90 - Dante Williams - Grade 85

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dante Williams is a skinny SF who had a great game in the Michigan State Championship:

Class A Boys Basketball State Championship Game Preview: Kalamazoo Central vs. Ann Arbor Huron (March 26, 2010)

PROBABLE STARTERS

For K-Central: Juniors Daquavion McCants-Wilson (5-foot-10, 4.7 points per game) and T.J. Buchanan (6-3, 13.2) at guards; seniors Devin Oliver (6-7, 16.7 PPG) and Angelo Griffis (6-3, 7.5) at forwards; junior Tyler Bell (6-2, 6.7) at center.

For Huron: Juniors A.J. Mathew (6-3, 15.2), Matt Hastings (6-3, 5.2) at guards; junior Dante Williams (6-6, 11.9 PPG) and Deandre Caldwell (6-2, 2.8) at forwards; senior Andrew Gleichert (6-5, 2.7) at center.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP

Saturday's Class A State Championship game features two teams who like to play the same style — full-court pressure and half-court trapping. Which squad can exert its will on the other, that's the question.

Last season, K-Central was far superior athletically to the young River Rats, and crushed them 71-48 in the regional finals. Huron had only two seniors on that team. This group has another year of experience under its belt, and it showed in Friday's 76-64 semifinals win over Southfield. The Rats placed five in double-figure scoring, led by 6-foot-6, 165-pound junior Dante Williams (19 points).

Championship Game: Kalamazoo Central 74, Ann Arbor Huron 65 (Official Box Score - March 27, 2010)

Devin Oliver: 26 points on 12-18 from the field.

Dante Williams: 24 points on 7-13 from the field, including 4-7 from downtown.

Congratulations to Devin Oliver - the best player on the best team in Michigan !

State Champs! Kalamazoo Central Beats Ann Arbor Huron 74-65, for Class A State Title (March 28, 2010)

EAST LANSING — Devin Oliver scored 12 of his game-high 26 points in the fourth quarter, when Kalamazoo Central's boys basketball team put the finishing touches on its 74-65 Class A State Title victory over Ann Arbor Huron Saturday at the Breslin Center.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Apparently, we're both recruiting him.
I seriously doubt that Brian Gregory will offer a scholarship to Dante Williams, as the Flyers have only 2 scholarships available for the HS Class of 2011 (Chris Wright's and Devin Searcy's) and Dayton will be overstocked with SFs in 2011.

Look for Brian Gregory to add a PF/C and a guard to the Flyers' roster in 2011.

Very nice article here in the DDN on the now four recruits for UD. Ya, this may be more of a public relations move by UD then anything but still, good article. Very high praise from Staten and Spearman's coaches. Especially for Spearman. Being called the best player in the state of Illinois (for the last 7 games) is again, like I've said, big big big time basketball. He and Staten both contribute right away next year. Oliver probably is out of RS territory for now with Berry a no show. Not sure on Hill yet...either going to be just an avg contributor but the potential for another "steal" in the recruiting game is clearly there.

UD Recruit Working Hard to Improve his Shooting Touch (Doug Harris, DDN - April 24, 2010)

Staten wants to join the Flyers next season as prepared as he can be.

Staten Sees the Flyers Flourishing Next Season (Doug Harris, DDN - April 27, 2010)

The 5-foot-11 speedster believes the Flyers can have another memorable season, although a lot will hinge on whether All-Atlantic 10 forward Chris Wright returns for his senior season.

“If Chris doesn’t come back, we’re a good enough team with the guys returning and the players coming in to have a great team,” Staten said. “I definitely think we can make the NCAA tournament, that goes without saying. If Chris comes back, we can make a RUN in the NCAA tournament.”

Muddy - Juwan Staten IS NOT a good 3 point shooter.
Think what you want. Muskies always do, and they're usually wrong.

SVSM Holds Off Staten to Grab D-II Title (Cleveland.com - March 28, 2009)

The teams battled back and forth throughout the first quarter as the lead changed four times. Staten, Thurgood Marshall’s dynamic point guard, got off to a blazing start. The University of Dayton recruit scored nine of the Cougars’ 13 first quarter points and his reverse layup at the first quarter buzzer gave Thurgood Marshall a 13-11 lead.

Staten continued his stellar shooting in the second. He canned two threes as Thurgood Marshall pushed its lead out to six when Staten found DeAngelo Gates streaking in for a layup and 24-18 lead with 1:40 left in the half.

The All-Ohio guard wasn’t done there, however, adding two more buckets in the final minute as the Cougars went to the locker room with a 29-24 halftime lead. Staten scored 20 first-half points on 8-of-13 shooting, including four three-pointers.

From there the Irish were able to cling to their miniscule lead and held off Staten down the stretch. The Irish iced the game when Harrison stroked four free throws in the final 10 seconds to clinch the victory.

Staten was only able to muster eight points in the second half but still finished with a game-high 28 to go along with four assists.

“He’s a great player,” said Michael Hammond following the game. “I think we just wore him out in the second half.”

LeBron James took Staten aside as the teams shook hands following the game and had a few personal words with the budding star.

UD Recruit Working Hard to Improve his Shooting Touch (Doug Harris, DDN - April 24, 2010)

When Oak Hill Academy coach Steve Smith walks by the gym at the Virginia prep school these days, he usually hears the squeak of one set of sneakers on the varnished floor and a thump-thump-thump of a basketball, followed by the whooshing sound a net makes when a perfectly stroked shot splashes down.

Without even looking inside, Smith knows who it is. Juwan Staten is hoisting jumpers once again in his never-ending pursuit to become a complete player.

“He’s in the gym all the time shooting,” Smith said. “He’s shooting the ball the best I’ve ever seen him. Hopefully, that carries over to next year.”

The University of Dayton-bound Staten averaged 12 points and six assists this year, and his stats probably would have been more robust if he didn’t have to share the ball with four teammates signed by national powers Kentucky, Syracuse, Connecticut and Maryland.

But the Dayton native wasn’t happy with his outside shot. He’s been working on adopting a new form with a textbook release — and it’s working.

“My shot is looking real good right now. It’s improved tremendously,” he said. “I want to go into college prepared.”

Smith believes Staten would have been prepared enough to start immediately at UD even before tweaking his release.

Oak Hill has had a long line of superlative point guards — the previous three were Brandon Jennings, Ty Lawson and Rajon Rondo, all of whom are toiling in the NBA — but Smith said none of them was better than Staten at running a fastbreak.

“He’s really great with the ball. Ty Lawson is the quickest guy I’ve had, but Juwan may be the quickest with the ball in his hands,” Smith said.

The 5-foot-11 speedster believes the Flyers can have another memorable season, although a lot will hinge on whether All-Atlantic 10 forward Chris Wright returns for his senior season.

1) Your username is inherently trolling, as it is clearly a riff on another username, one whose posts you consistently respond to.

2) You are posting in a thread with the topic of "Dayton Recruiting," and the majority of said posts aren't about Dayton recruiting, but are about other members of the forum.

You, sir, are the troll in this thread. Pot, meet kettle. It is true that Muddy is quite capable of being a troll in other threads. But not in this one. Try taking the high road for once. Muddy should do the same.

This board is shameful. Free speech and all that, but I wouldn't be disappointed if some strong moderation wasn't used for an extended period of time.

Yup. Interesting quote from him too. Asked who else was in the running and the first team he mentioned.......Dayton, but then goes on to say that they never offered. :combust:

I would hope to the basketball gods that this just isn't true but who knows....he listed Dayton, Central Michigan, Oakland (MI), and Utah....now, that's the type of list that when we do get a player like this, we get laughed at, but Izzo saw something in him that the others didn't. Really strange coming from a team that makes the Final Four more often then we make the NCAA but heck, why question Izzo at this point.

#555 · (Edited)
Seems like BG took the same approach with Anderson that he took with Devin Oliver. Anderson got an offer he liked and took it. Good for him. He seems like a good prospect and a good kid, but he's not essential. James Crockett out of Illinois is probably just as good if not a bit better, and at least in his words he's on the verge of committing to UD. Pretty good prospects are a dime a dozen. When dealing with them, you try to predict 4 years into the future. He probably sees more from Crockett or someone else. Whether that turns out to be true or not, it's darn good logic.

Izzo is the perhaps the best coach in America right now because he knows the true value of the 4 year player. I don't have the data, but it sure as heck seems like MSU has fewer one and two and done players than every other elite program, even stud prospects like Raymar Morgan become 4 year guys. And unlike other elite schools, MSU doesn't really ever fall back too much, the occasional down year is pretty much it. Every 4 year player under him has been to a Final Four. My guess is that his vision for Dwaun is to be a 4-5 year role player that evolves into a key cog as a senior. I wouldn't bet against it. Izzo is a genius, pure and simple.

Brian Vonderhaar, a 5'-10" point guard, has joined the Dayton Flyers:

Moeller Basketball Player Commits (Cincinnati Enquirer - May 5, 2010)

Brian Vonderhaar, a 2009 Moeller graduate and First-Team All-League player, has been selected as a walk-on for the University of Dayton basketball team next season, according to Moeller basketball coach Carl Kremer.

Student of the Week: Brian Vonderhaar (WCPO - March 25, 2009)

Brian Vonderhaar

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

GCL Statistical Leaders by Category (Official GCL 2008-09 Stats)

Scoring (Official GCL 2008-09 Stats)

20. Brian Vonderhaar (Moeller) - 9.4 PPG

Field Goal Shooting % (Official GCL 2008-09 Stats)

5. Brian Vonderhaar (Moeller) - 54.9 % (62 of 113 field goal attempts made.)`

Brian Vonderhaar's 54.9 % FG shooting was 1st in the GCL for guards and wings.

3-Point Shooting % (Min. 20 attempts made) (Official GCL 2008-09 Stats)

1. Brian Vonderhaar (Moeller) - 47.5 % (38 of 80 3-point attempts made.)

Free Throw Shooting % (Official GCL 2008-09 Stats)

1. Brian Vonderhaar (Moeller) - 92.9 % (26 of 28 free throw attempts made.)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After the departure of Jesse Berry from the Flyers' 2010-11 Roster, Brian Vonderhaar is a very welcome and useful addition to the team.

With freshman Juwan Staten and junior Josh Parker ahead of him in the Flyers' depth chart at point guard, I would not expect to see Brian Vonderhaar get much court time except for mop-up duty at the end of games. But if Staten or Parker are ill or injured during the season (which hopefully will not happen), Vonderhaar appears to be good enough to give the Flyers' starting PG a rest on the bench when necessary.

Brian Gregory needed an "insurance policy" for the PG position, and he got one.

Best of luck to Brian Vonderhaar in his career as a Dayton Flyer !

Come on Muddy, can you get a clue, please? He has been selected as a WALK-ON. As a WALK-ON, he is going to be part of the scout team, and help the team in practices. As a WALK-ON, he is barely going to see the light of day on the basketball court. Dan Fox, UD walk-on for the last 4 years, only saw the floor for like 25 minutes this past year. And if Staten or Parker get injured, I'd bet Paul Williams steps up and becomes the 3rd string point guard. Just rewatched some of the Mississippi game, and he was on the court with Mickey at the 1 & 2, so, I would think he will be higher on the depth chart than this WALK-ON.

But, since you're so good, name me the last Dayton walk-on that got significant minutes. I can't think of one.

Thanks. Only took me 193 posts to achieve this elite status. Funny how you can call Jeff Robinson, a 17-18 yr old kid, "Splinters" for months and then get upset when the tables are turned. Just validates your ignorance.

"Brian Gregory needed an "insurance policy" for the PG position, and he got one."

Funny how Coach Mack did the same thing with Robinson after the D Brown exit, to back up Love and Frease in case of injury, but your perspective was totally different. Anyway, I wish the kid all the best.

Keith was techincally a walk on his first season, though promised a scholarship for his remaining 4 seasons. Was Andy Metzger a walkon at one point? Ted Fitz played decent minutes, though he was better than the traditional walk-on, though not as good as your typical A-10er but got a free ride to school since his Uncle was school president.

I'm sure there were others during the O'Brien years (shudder), but I'm going to assume, unless proven otherwise, that if Vonderhaar is getting significant minutes, UD is in trouble. Its nice that he apparently has a nice shot and can make a free throw, and if forced into a game next year, perhaps he can hold his own in short stints, but I'm guessing his athleticism isn't nearly up to par with what a typical A-10 PG would need.

mudflap, wasn't Robinson a scholarship player? If your on scholarship, you should never be compared to a walk-on or otherwise you've likely dissapointed the expectations that the coach who signed you had.

I don't believe your recollection on KW is accurate. I believe KW was a red shirt freshman and had 5 years to complete 4 years of eligibility, all years counted toward UD's ship limit...there were a number of options floated about re: the Keith and his brother Adam over the years on internet boards so it's not surprising for recollections to be off.

re: the rest of the guys you mention...I have no recollection of their status...

I'm 99% certain that Keith and his family had to pay their own way the 1st season (I think UD was out of scholarships was the main reason) I remember Keith's father posting more than 1x that he always felt 5 years of college for the price of 1 was a reasonable offer in his mind and why they took OPs offer over going somewhere less desirable (can't remember his other options, but I assume there was more than 1) where he could be on scholarship right away.
