Re: Dayton Recruiting
He had a recruitment. He had interest and/or offers from Marquette, Providence and some others. Calipari hosted him on a visit but didn't offer. He's didn't exactly appear from thin air.
There are conflicting reports as to whether or not Dayton is still an option for him, or if he is still interested in UD. We'll find out soon, I'd imagine. Northwestern gives athletes no breaks, which is rare. Nearly every other school will admit an athlete if he is below the normal standard for admission, but Northwestern will not. That's why they've never made the NCAA tourney and have a good football team once in a generation.

Re: Dayton Recruiting
I hope Brozja comes to Dayton. We really need a SG to round out the class. And that would make three foreign born players on the team. New Dayton record? Not exactly the UN days of GW, but getting there.

Re: Dayton Recruiting
He could end up at UD, but I think Archie is also in on a few other possible transfers, and may well just call it a class after the Pierre signing. I'm not sure there's a wrong way to play it. Simply having the warm bodies won't be an issue, they have 11 that can play and 12 scholarship guys for practice. That's plenty. If someone is added, it will be more of a luxury than anything.

Re: Dayton Recruiting
I believe UD had a visit last week from Tyler Harris a 6'7" Sf who is transferring from NC State. Harris' older brother, Tobias plays for the Milwaukee Bucks and he has a younger brother, Terry who is supposed to be a player too. Tyler was ranked at 135 by Rivals for 2011.
I too would not be adverse to seeing Miller roll over the available scholarship. |

Re: Dayton Recruiting
In post 2809 I mentioned Dayton had offered a 'ship' to Dayshon Smith a PG from NYC. here is some additional info about him from NBE basketball on his play in the Rumble in the Bronx tourney:
Top Performance of the Day: Dayshon Smith (NY Lightning 2013) – Affectionately called “Scooch” by just about everybody, Smith is an old school New York City point guard. He uses spins, hesitation moves, crossovers, and herky-jerky head fakes to constantly work his way into the paint and make plays. Once inside he’s equally likely to use a soft floater, explode towards the rim, or whip a pass out to a 3 point shooter at any and all angles. While his physical skills are impressive it’s the mental side of the game where Smith truly separates himself from the competition. He has a unique understanding of when to get others involved and when to look for his own offense. In the first half of a Saturday night victory Scooch ran the show and got everyone else the ball in spots where they could be successful. Then down the stretch of the second half with the outcome still in the balance he took matters into his own hands and seemed to score on every possession down the floor. This is not the first time I’ve seen Smith master the balance of keeping teammates happy for 3.5 quarters and then closing the game out himself in the final moments. It’s unusual for players at the high school level to already understand that just because they can get their own shot any time doesn’t always make it the right decision. Scooch is ahead of the game in this area and it’s a mindset that will continue to serve him well at the next level. |

Add that to taking UMass's assistant Jackson, their recruiting is likely to continue to improve. Well, the Croation kid looks pretty damn talented anyway. His height at the 2 spot is intriguing. |

Re: Dayton Recruiting
The following is from a recent story in NBE Basketball about two guards UD has supposedly been after. Since neither is quoted as mentioning Dayton, I would guess the Flyer's prospects of landing these guys is not not good right now.
NYC GUARDS SHANE RECTOR & DAYSHON SMITH SEE RECRUITMENT RISE June 9, 2012 by NBE Blogger · Leave a Comment by Alex Schwartz ENGLEWOOD, N.J. – Shane Rector and Dayshon Smith are two of the top New York City natives in the class of 2013. Both point guards, Rector and Smith have different styles of play, but they each get the job done on the hardwood. On Friday night, NBE Sports had the opportunity to catch up with both of the Big Apple floor generals while at City Sports for the first round of games in the 2012 Rumble in the Bronx. Rector, who stands 6-foot-1 and attends St. Raymond’s (NY), listed scholarship offers from Providence and Hofstra. The Playaz Basketball Club standout also named Arizona, Iowa State, Georgetown, Pittsburgh, North Carolina State, Stanford, and UMass as programs involved in his recruitment. “No, not right now,” Rector said when asked if he has any favorites. The strong lead guard has only taken one visited thus far, but he has a couple of other trips in the works. “I’ve visited Stanford,” Rector said. “I’m scheduled to UMass and Pittsburgh, though. That’s coming up.” As for when those visits will take place, Rector remarked, “UMass is next week and [for] Pittsburgh we gotta make a date.” There are a few schools in particular who Rector feels are coming at him the hardest. “UMass is really coming at me hard, Iowa State, Stanford,” Rector said. “Who else? Pittsburgh. All the coaches have been calling me. They only get one call a month so it’s really hard to tell who’s at the top and everything.” Despite the fact that he remains open, Rector does have an idea of when he would like to make his college choice. “I mean, I would like to make my decision before the end of the summer, but we gotta just see what happens,” Rector said. Asked if he is waiting on any certain offer before making his pledge, Rector replied, “No, I’m just—[I want to] see what feels right for me, so there’s no [specific offer].” The school list for 6-foot-1 Dayshon Smith of Putnam Science Academy (CT) is a bit longer. A spring breakout player with the NY Lightning, Smith claims offers from UAB, Towson, Manhattan, Fairfield, Quinnipiac, and St. Peter’s. He added that there are others who have extended full rides as well. In addition to his offers, Smith said that he is hearing from Syracuse, Wichita State, Miami, Providence, and others. “It’s a long list, I mean, I can’t remember it all right now,” Smith said. There are no schools standing out to Smith at this point, but that is simply because he has not taken the time to really think about it. “No, I’m really into it right now,” Smith said. “I’ll be focused more in August, after July, after the live period in July.” Thus far, Smith said he has been on unofficial visits to Syracuse, Quinnipiac, St. Peter’s, and Fairfield. “Not as of now, no visits,” Smith said of whether he has any trips planned. “I’ll set up some visits in August also. I’ll do everything in August.” Smith has an idea of when he wants to make his college commitment, but his timetable is not set in stone. “I really wanna make a decision before school season starts next year, but it doesn’t really matter to me,” Smith said. “Whenever I feel most comfortable, [I will do it].” There is no school in particular that Smith feels is coming at him the hardest, but it is not long before he feels he will be able to know who is. “It’s all mutual if you ask me, I feel it’s all mutual,” Smith said. “But we’ll see, we’ll really see on June 15th when it’s unlimited calls and texts.” Smith shared his thoughts on the new NCAA rule that will allow coaches to call and text message players without limit, starting in six days. “I mean, it’s good,” Smith began. “It helps—it builds relationships, helps build better relationships, but it might annoy some kids. Some coaches might keep calling a lot even though they don’t wanna be bothered, that’s the only bad part about it.” Are there any coaches in particular with whom Smith feels he has the strongest relationships right now? “I just build good relationships with all coaches because you never know what might happen in the future,” Smith said. “So, I just let it all soak in and build relationships with everyone.” |

Re: Dayton Recruiting
Relates to Xavier recruiting a little bit but probably moreso to Dayton.
Maverick Morgan chose Illinois this morning after his visit yesterday, must say I'm pretty shocked he didn't end up at his hometown school in UD or at least wait for the OSU offer... |

Re: Dayton Recruiting
^Surprising. Only info I really read about Morgan was through this board and a lot of posters made it sound like almost a sure commit for UD as long as OSU didn't offer.
P.S. Where is Muddy when you need him? He's usually on top of this kind of news. Would love to hear "Muddy's observations" for this latest set-back in UD recruiting. |

Re: Dayton Recruiting
Always happy for a local kid. Good for him. Would have been nice to have him, but he's not a program changer the way a kid like Adreian Payne would have been.
Not sure about John Groce on this one, though. I just don't see it. Seems a lot like James Cripe going to Dayton or Griffin McKenzie going to Xavier. Good for the kid, but I don't know if he will ever be good enough for that level of play. Big reach for Illinois, and a big project.

The kid wanted to go to a program with more exposure and more than a 15% chance of making one NCAA tournament in the next 4 years. If I were to speculate on Muddy's observations it would read something like this: Morgan is a nice player but Dayton really wasn't trying to get him or they would have....

Re: Dayton Recruiting
I'm really not sure Morgan can play in the Big 10. I'm too lazy to go dig back, but I I mentioned earlier that I was in support of Butler deciding not to give him an offer (looks like they have opted to go with 7'2" Chier Ajou instead, who will redshirt into the 2013 class).
