Flyers aim for a great class (Doug Harris, Dayton Daily News - June 28, 2009)

Dayton Flyers 2009-10 Depth Chart with 2008-09 Scoring (5 Seniors):

PG: London Warren (6-0 Sr./ 4.1 PPG), Rob Lowery (6-2 Sr./ 7.5 PPG)
SG: Marcus Johnson (6-3 Sr./ 11.8 PPG), Mickey Perry (6-2 Sr./ 4.6 PPG), Paul Williams (6-4 Soph./ 2.2 PPG)
SF: Chris Wright (6-8 Jr./ 13.3 PPG), Chris Johnson (6-5 Soph./ 6.3 PPG), Luke Fabrizius (6-9 Soph./ 4.3 PPG)
PF: Devin Searcy (6-10 Jr./ 2.8 PPG), Josh Benson (6-10 Fr./ DNP)
C: Kurt Huelsman (6-10 Sr./ 3.6 PPG), Matt Kavanaugh (6-10 Fr./ DNP)

Brian Gregory has 6 scholarships available for the 2010 Class (the 5 present seniors plus Stephen Thomas’ scholarship) and the following wish list:

1 point guard
1 shooting guard
2 combo guards
1 combo forward
Adreian Payne

The point guard scholarship went to Juwan Staten.

At the present time, Brandon Spearman and Jalen Steele are the front-runners for the shooting guard scholarship.

Both combo guard scholarships have now been awarded, the first going to Drake transfer Josh Parker, who will be a junior in 2010-11 (Josh Parker video) and the second to Jesse Berry.

The combo forward scholarship went to Ralph Hill, who appears to be a slightly bigger version of multi-skilled, athletic Chris Johnson. Brian Gregory was in early on both Ralph Hill and Chris Johnson, and both flew under the national radar (i.e. head coaches of BCS-conference schools and the basketball recruiting websites) before committing to Dayton. As you recall, Chris Johnson was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie team in March 2009, which was quite an accomplishment for a reserve SF playing behind Chris Wright. At 6’-5” Chris Johnson is quite capable of playing the SG position against opponents’ taller SGs. Brian Gregory is very keen to stock his roster with players who can play 2 positions – “interchangeable parts” as he calls them – and is doing a great job of so.

The sixth and final scholarship available for 2010 is being held for PF/C Adreian Payne, who may or may not commit to Dayton. As many of you know already, Payne is still very raw, but has incredible upside potential. If Payne commits elsewhere, Brian Gregory may offer it to another 2010 prospect or hold the scholarship for a 2011 prospect.

It is relevant to ask how much UD’s recruiting has improved since Brian Gregory was named head coach of the Dayton Flyers.

This question is best answered by looking at the last two recruiting classes that were signed by Oliver Purnell before he left for Clemson:

University of Dayton Prospects: HS Class of 2002 (Scout.com)

University of Dayton Prospects: HS Class of 2003 (Scout.com)

If Chris Wright has a monster season in 2009-10 (i.e. 18 PPG, 8 RPG, 50% FGs, and 40% from 3-point range) he may well forego his senior year at UD and head to the NBA a year early as a first-round draft pick. However, given the very strong field of players who will likely be in the 2010 NBA Draft, coupled with Derrick Brown's disappointing # 40 selection in the 2009 NBA Draft, I consider it far more likely that Wright will play his senior year at UD.

If Wright does leave early for the NBA, the Flyers will still have junior Chris Johnson, junior Luke Fabrizius, and freshman Ralph Hill available to man the 3-spot in 2010-11. This means that Brian Gregory will not find himself in Chris Mack's situation of having to waste a valuable scholarship on a career pine-jockey in a desperate attempt to fill a hole in the roster after the unexpected departure of the team's best player.

Dayton has not passed Xavier as a program yet, but as each season goes by, Brian Gregory has been building a stronger roster and closing the gap between the Flyers and the Musketeers. I believe it is likely that the Flyers will win the Atlantic 10 Conference this season and continue to improve relative to Xavier and the rest of the Atlantic 10 basketball teams. However, that is only one man's humble opinion. As always, we'll see . . .

God, I hope Andrew Taylor has 6 years of eligibility left at Xavier.

I love that kid like a son. Coachpuncher is his long lost half-brother.

Kevin Dillard, who was voted as Illinois' "Mr. Basketball" in 2008 and the MVC's "Freshman of the Year" in 2009, committed to Dayton knowing that he would quite likely be Juwan Staten's back-up during the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons. To the best of my knowledge, Kevin Dillard is the only "Mr. Basketball" on the roster of any Atlantic 10 team. There isn't much more to it than that.

HS Class of 2008 Point Guard Rankings (ESPN/Scouts Inc.)

PG # 16 - Kevin Dillard

PG # 65 - Terrell Holloway

It is fortunate for Xavier that a lot of 6th-graders have become big fans of the Musketeers basketball team.

But it is unfortunate for the rest of us that they have discovered the Atlantic 10 message board.

Waymire is deathly afraid of Dillard. Dillard has better or comparable stats to X's #1 threat next year; therefore, he must look to irrelevancies like their respective team's performances. Fact is Dillard was the best player on Southern Illinois, and it appears that some of the team's key deficiencies, e.g., poor rebounding, horrible FT %, etc. had little to do with him. Dillard led the MVC in assists, yet his team was 4th overall in the MVC in assists. Southern Illinois was 2nd in the MVC in points, and 1st in FG %; thus, it appears the offense was being run well. Dillard was the best player on the team playing a half-court offense that he felt was stifling enough to transfer. I am sure Dillard's defensive skills will improve under BG although the only negative review of his defense was from a ST Louis fan observation where K mitchell scored 22 points (but Dillard finished with 23). Looking forward to see how Dillard performs with the Flyers after a red-shirt year.

Back to back to back to back sure makes that pipeline in Chi. look like typical off season and "preseason" accolades. Hmmm, maybe they forget how to play once they leave a real city for a dying sewage dump. Must be something in the water that makes them piss down their legs when they get to conference play. 4 out of the last 5 years oompa loompa couldn't bring home an above .500 league record!!!!!!!!!! Maybe I'll have to change oompa loompa' nickname to 8 and 8. He seems to be getting very comfortable at that mark.

"Staten to Wright for another slam !"

You heard it here first. I'm looking forward to the 2010-11 season already !

UD fans ripping on other schools for lack of NCAA tournament success. It doesn't get any better than that!
Coach Fran Dunphy won his last NCAA Tournament game in March 1994.

The Temple Owls won their last NCAA Tournament game in March 2001.

The Dayton Flyers won their last NCAA Tournament game in March 2009.

But that isn't relevant to the thread topic, as you already know.

Please find another thread for your tired rants, and enjoy your weekend.

Who is going to be the first player to sign on with UD for 2011? You think BG will continue to scour the "waiver wire" for transfers? Or will he actually land somebody from the schoolboy ranks for this class? Any "high major" talent prepping in the greater Dayton metro area for 2011? How about Chitown for 2011 that the Flyers would have an "in" with?

Your pimp awaits his links Muddy. . . .

#745 ·
I guess Muddy doesn't know much about college basketball, but Fran Dunphy was the longtime coach at Penn, and while we did indeed lose to an Ivy League team (a damn good one at that), winning NCAA Tournament games is pretty difficult without scholarships and with actual academic requirements. Most of Dunphy's former players are coaches (head coaches, assistant coaches) at D-I schools, lawyers, doctors, investment bankers, etc. I imagine most of Flat Top Brian's former players are in jail, unemployed, dead, assistant to the assistant manager at the Dayton Burger King.

Well, here I am posting for the first time in the 3 years I have been following this site. First off, I am a Dayton fan. Secondly, my first act as a member is to place Muddy Waters on my ignore list. Congratulations Muddy, you have done nothing but drag the average Flyer fan thru your "Mud". It is, quite honestly, pathetic. Now you can join all the others I have put on ignore :

Adolf Hitler: For having a big head.

That's about it for now.

I will be glad to chat about our successes and failures to anyone on this site except for you. You give UD a bad name. And I am tired of nitwitnessing it.

Jakarr Sampson, SF/PF, King James Stars- Sampson has always been a long and active guy who could handle the ball a bit at 6-foot-8. However, he was also wild and out of control much of the time. However, those days may be gone and Sampson is evolving into a true game changer with elite quickness for a guy his size. His team is obviously better with him on the floor making things happen off the bounce and he's added strength to go along with his quickness. He's likely going to need a pretty nice bump in the rankings and could be a beast in a wide open system in college. He's currently hearing from Louisville, Xavier, Ohio State, Michigan State, Baylor, Akron and Cincinnati.

Did oompa loompa give up on Jakarr?

#752 ·
Is there really NOTHING going on recruiting wise that you have to post incessantly about a transfer? Surely, oompa loompa is working at landing some bigs for 2011 or 2012. I guess the basement boys are just hoping Dillard will make everyone forget that BG's cupboard is looking awfully barren. Time to find another "diamond" or BWS because the ranking services don't seem to think he's got much working.

#759 ·
I'm not saying this solely because I dislike Dayton. If you are a decently high-major recruit, why would you pick Dayton? Most likely, the recruits goal is to get to the next level, the NBA. Dayton does not send their guys to the NBA, so it's no surpise that they have no committments for 2011. Something just isn't clicking on the developments side of things for Dayton coaches, and kids are starting to take notice of it.

#760 ·
I think Dayton only recently started getting the level of talent capable of making it to the NBA. That bump in talent will eventually start yielding results, most likely starting with Chris Wright. I think the player development thing is a little over-hyped at Dayton. Even if London Warren had developed a textbook jumpshot, he still would not have made it into the NBA. Chris Johnson won the most improved award last season, but only because he has the physical tools necessary for that improvement. Guys like Chris Johnson, Josh Benson and Devin Oliver have the bodies (or will have the bodies) and athleticism to improve to an NBA level. Will any of those three make it? Who knows, but all the improvement in the world isn't going to get a guy into the NBA that doesn't have right physical tools.

#762 ·
Good point CBUS. Muddled Waters ragged on Xavier for taking transfers - but if it works for UD all the better I guess.

And to be clear some transfers work out better than others. Andy Taylor was one most scratched their head on when it was announced. Brian Thornton (mainly due to injury) never panned out like I thought, but props to Brian for being an Academic All American. Lavender, Anderson, and Crawford paid dividends on the court for Xavier.

I think getting D1 transfers is a way of life these days. Kids (and coaches) are always looking for the best possible situation for themselves. Nothing wrong with that.

I will be curious to see how Parker does this year for UD and Dillard the following year. I think they were both solid pickups for the Flyers.

#763 ·
Parker and Dillard represent a step forward in the level of transfer we are able to attract. Both are proven talents. For the last few years UD has been way ahead of the curve as far as getting commitments (far ahead of time and most other programs). We have only two scholarships to give in 2011, and probably only really need to fill one. That will give us a 12 man roster with everything we need, IMO. We have been normally playing with 12 active players and a transfer in waiting anyhow. BG is a consistantly good recruiter. I'm suprised his recuting acumen is being questioned by the peanut gallery here. I think BG has about 3-4 good PF prospects out there, and he usually has a few up his sleeve that nobody even knows we are involved with heavily. I guess it could come down to settling on a Taylor or Robinson type player, but I would bet against it knowing BG's track record. There hasn't been a wasted scholarship on our roster for the last few years, the way I see it.

I think we will use both scholarships before all is done, but I think he can be very selective with the 2nd. The way he has been getting good transfers lately, he could even hold it open for a transfer possibility.

As seen with the Dillard transfer, the style of our play in the NIT championship run made an impression on some players. It was some good press for us.
