Yes and no. You're right in that kids, in simplistic terms, want the big name school or conference. Coming out of high school, that is generally the consensus. Playing time is up there for them but every single kid also thinks he will be a starter logging 35 min a game by their sophomore season. Thus 400 transfers this year. That big name loses its luster when you're picking splinters out of your ass.

Re: Dayton Recruiting

Another UD PG recruiting target. From NBE 6/18
JAYLON BROWN IS A ’13 STOCK RISER
Jaylon Brown of Fishers (IN) has made quite an impression this spring on the AAU trail with Martin’s Wolverines. The fearless 6-foot, 175-pound guard simply attacks defenders using his supreme athletic ability. He competes and plays with toughness. He is more of a scoring point guard but will create for others with the ability dribble, drive and dish in the lane. Brown’s play in front of college coaches in the April evaluation period brought in new attention from colleges and scholarship offers.
“Miami (OH), Ohio, Illinois State and Akron [have offered] and Virginia, Illinois, Duquesne, St. Joseph’s and Tulsa [are showing interest],” said Brown on the new developments in his recruitment since the April evaluation period.
Currently there is no big favorite, but Brown singled out a few schools that he might be liking a little more than the rest and a trio likely to get visits from him.
“]Dayton[/B], Virginia, Butler, Illinois, Illinois State, Ohio and some others,” said Brown of the schools he was currently considering active in his recruitment, adding that “Virginia, Illinois and Illinois State” are schools he would like to visit.
Brown decides to expects to decide on a college following the July AAU period in time to sign in November. He is looking for a school that “just fits me best.”

Re: Dayton Recruiting

I really like Brown. I was down on him a year ago because I didn't think he could shoot based on scouting reports, but either those were incorrect or he has massively improved his stroke. He has shown NBA range this summer and the ability to shoot 3s both off the catch and off the dribble. Brown is one of the most athletic point guards in the country and is great at running an offense. He plays on the same AAU team as Morgan. At one point he really wanted to go to Butler, but it appears Butler is no longer recruiting him. I've heard rumors that this is due to academic reasons, but these are only rumors. I think he would be a great pickup if Dayton could land him.

Re: Dayton Recruiting

No clue on this kid but before he chose Miami (FL) he had UD in his final 4 or 5 choices. By all accounts a 4 star player and highly rated. Would be eligible in 2012. Way late in the game so I'm not expecting this to pan out. Melvin Johnson from NYC.

http://insider.espn.go.com/blog/ncbr...ase-from-miami

You can read a bit of the article for free....

On Zagsblog today this is also mentioned with quotes from family that they want to get this over with quick and not visit a whole lot of schools again so.....

http://www.zagsblog.com/2012/07/12/f...on-the-market/

I also have no clue if it was Archie recruiting him or Gregory. That would probably be a huge factor in this.

Re: Dayton Recruiting

According to Zach Brazille's column in the NY Post, Melvin Johnson is visiting VCU today. The other schools of interest are: South Florida, St. Johns, Memphis and Dayton. I don't know how to do the link. Unknown whether or not he is planning to visit UD.

I assume he already visited UD in the past. I don't like our chances if he's visiting new schools now that he didn't before and doesn't visit UD again.

I can tell you right now Xavier is not recruiting this kid. He might have been offered at one point though.
