A little surprised that AM is looking for a SF given Derenbecker & Pierre's eligibility vs SG where Sanford graduates after next season. Assuming he still has four ships available next year I wouldn't be surprised to see him hold one for a transfer or someone who decommits from another program.
I'm in favor of anything that has both Pollard and Dayton. The closer you are, the quicker it hits you.

More from Chicago:

Bulls-Eye's Summer Award Winners (Illinois Prep Bulls-Eye - July 30, 2012)

Blood And Guts Award

•Kyle Davis - 6'-0" 2013 CG - Chicago (Morgan Park) IL - Mac Irvin Fire

Maybe a trend is beginning to emerge, but for the second year in a row this award goes to a back court performer. And as far as we are concerned there may not be a more clear-cut choice from amongst any of our Summer Award winners, as Davis simply exemplifies everything that the phrase "blood and guts" stands for. The bottom line is that he never stops playing and has a work ethic that is second to none.

The biggest reason that Davis is the recipient of this award is because there may not be another player in Illinois with a higher motor.
Davis simply plays with enormous tenacity at both ends of the floor and a high level of energy. He is explosive in transition and as strong a finisher as anyone you will find for a player his size. Not only that, but Davis is also an outstanding man-to-man defender and along with his back court mate Paris Lee was the main catalyst behind the pressure defense employed by his Mac Irvin Fire traveling team which created numerous scoring opportunities off of turnovers throughout the Spring and Summer. And to top it all off, if you back off of Davis, the lefty is quite capable of burying shots from 3-point land.

The only reason that Davis has not drawn even more recruiting attention from high major programs is because some perceive him as an undersized combo guard. Nevertheless, he is being recruited extremely hard by Dayton, USC, Nebraska and Xavier among others and would be a tremendous get for any of those programs. We look for Davis to have an outstanding high school season at Morgan Park as he heads into his senior year.

Kyle Davis Closes It Out And Commits To Atlantic Ten School (Illinois Prep Bulls-Eye - August 18, 2012)

One thing about recruits who play for the Mac Irvin Fire traveling team--they do not mess around when it comes to taking official visits. History has shown that when a player schedules an official it is usually done with the intention of closing out his recruitment.

Such is the case with 6'0 2013 Kyle Davis from Morgan Park High School in Chicago. Davis committed to Dayton and head coach Archie Miller after taking an official visit to the campus last weekend. He ended up choosing the Flyers over offers from Nebraska, USC, and Xavier and strong interest from Butler and Virginia Tech.

Davis was offered a scholarship by Dayton back in June. From that time forward, Miller and assistant coaches Tom Ostrom and Kevin Kuwik went full-speed ahead in their pursuit. The entire staff tracked Davis endlessly throughout the July evaluation period including the EYBL Finals of the NIKE Peach Jam in North Augusta, SC and the Bigfoot Hoops Classic in Las Vegas and let him know that he was a top recruiting priority.

It was initially thought that Davis might take some other visits but after arriving on campus and getting a chance to interact with the coaching staff and current players he knew that Dayton was the place for him. The fact he will be able to come in and make an immediate impact in the Atlantic Ten helped seal the deal even more. In fact, Davis is in many ways a carbon copy of another Illinois-based recruit who has done quite well for himself at Dayton--Kevin Dillard. That alone should give Flyer fans a good indication of what is in store for the future.

Davis is the winner of our Blood And Guts Summer Award (http://ilprepbullseye.com/Summer_Awards.html). Simply put, he exemplifies everything that the phrase stands for, as he never stops playing, has a work ethic that is second to none and may have the highest motor of any player in Illinois.

Davis simply plays with enormous tenacity at both ends of the floor and a high level of energy. He is explosive in transition and as strong a finisher as anyone you will find for a player his size. Not only that, but Davis is also an outstanding man-to-man defender and was one of the main catalysts behind a pressure defense employed by his Mac Irvin Fire traveling team which created numerous scoring opportunities off of turnovers throughout the Spring and Summer. And to top it all off, if you back off of Davis, the lefty is quite capable of burying shots from 3-point land.

Miller and the Flyers continue to recruit Chicago extremely hard and may not be done yet when it comes to landing 2013 recruits from the Windy City. In addition to Davis, Dayton will have 6'6 wing forward Kendall Pollard on campus for an official visit the weekend of September 14-16.

Davis is the second prospect from the loaded Mac Irvin Fire 17-Under squad to offer up a verbal commitment this Summer. The first was 5'11 2013 guard Paris Lee from Proviso East High School in Maywood, IL who pledged to Illinois State University upon the conclusion of the NIKE Peach Jam.

Editor's Note: Folks, despite how this one is spun, Illinois Prep Bulls-eye was aware that Davis' commitment to Dayton was a done deal as soon as he completed his official visit. However, those advising him had to make sure that he made the announcement official at a later time in order to make it look as though certain others in Chicago actually had the "scoop" on this commitment. With that being said, that is why we have left the date and time of this story as it is, as we had this story ready to go then.

7. Kendall Pollard, 6-5, WF, Chicago (Simeon)

He's now more than just a tough, physical lockdown defender. He's expanded his offensive game and is more athletic. Pollard jumped into the top 10 after a sterling month of June while playing with his high school team, which college coaches didn't get to see. Now he has a surplus of schools courting him.

8. Kyle Davis, 6-0, PG/2G, Chicago (Morgan Park)

The high-scoring guard put up some impressive performances over the course of the summer. With his lightning quickness and explosiveness, he will grab your attention and turn your head in a gym. In the open court and in transition, he's a fabulous get-to-the-rim finisher. The playmaking ability and decision-making is still a work in progress. Davis could excel in the right type of system and style in college. An official visit to Dayton is on tap this weekend.

Dunbar Star's Off-court Troubles Giving Division I Hoops Programs Pause (DDN - April 20, 2010)

"I didn’t know how difficult life could be if you make it hard for yourself," said Geron Johnson, who led Dunbar High School to another Division II state title last month.

The slashing 6-foot-3 guard has few weaknesses on the court. He’s a gifted up-tempo finisher, has great shooting range and is a tireless defender.

He was academically ineligible as a sophomore and flamed out with a late-season arrest as a junior.

A decorated senior season notwithstanding, Johnson is the great player that many programs seemingly are after, but with a wait-and-see tag.

That could all change with a productive year of junior college. To do that, he says he’ll have to pass 60 credit hours — 20 hours per quarter — with a GPA near 3.0.

Cincinnati, West Virginia, and Cleveland State have maintained the most interest.

I don't expect that we will ever see Geron wearing the Flyers' Red & Blue.

Players on Junior College teams usually tend to be selfish and take shots they shouldn't (instead of passing the ball to a teammate) because they believe that their ticket to a Division I basketball scholarship is to score as many points as possible in JUCO ball, and thereby get noticed by Division I coaches.

They are quite aware that relatively few JUCO players go on to receive a Division I scholarship, so there is very little incentive for them to put their team ahead of their scoring.

Bad habits from JUCO play usually follow a player to their Division I school, which makes most, if not all JUCO transfers a risk for a Division I coach.

Geron Johnson is a bad apple that I wouldn't want to see wearing the Flyers' Red & Blue.

4-Star SG Geron Johnson (Rivals / JucoJunction profile)

JUCO Standout Geron Johnson Admitted to Memphis, Will Play This Season (Gary Parrish, CBS Sports - August 30, 2012)
Junior college standout Geron Johnson has been admitted to the University of Memphis and is now officially a part of the 2012-13 Tigers after months of questions about whether he'd be allowed to enroll, Memphis coach Josh Pastner told CBS Sports.

Johnson is a heralded combo guard from Dayton whose natural talent is only overshadowed by the amount of off-the-court problems he's experienced since becoming an elite recruit.

He was arrested for attempted burglary during high school and was an academic non-qualifier upon graduation.

He then enrolled at Chipola College in Florida as a freshman but was ultimately dismissed from that team after a marijuana arrest.

He then enrolled at Garden City College in Kansas as a sophomore but was also dismissed from that team and school after multiple legal problems, among them allegations that he stole another student's cell phone.

But Memphis still offered a scholarship.

And Johnson accepted.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some schools will accept any riff-raff that comes along, as long as they are good basketball players.

I'm glad that the University of Dayton isn't one of them.

For those of you interested who may have missed this:

More on Kyle Davis (Doug Harris, DDN - August 27, 2012)
Davis averaged 25 points and seven assists last season for Chicago’s Hyde Park Academy, where he has been in the lineup for three years. But he’s transferring to Morgan Park High School this year.

I asked Nick Irvin, the Morgan Park coach and Davis’ coach on the AAU circuit, why the player was transferring.

Irvin said: "He’s transferring because of academic reasons."

"He’s a phenomenal student, and he really wanted to challenge himself academically."

I like UD's chances on both Smith and Pollard IF we can get them to visit. There are some big schools after them but no Top 10-15 programs so they are there for the taking. Reggie Rankin tweeted the other day that Archie was doing a visit (in home??) with Pollard yesterday.

I was surprised to see the cover article on Rival's Dayton page indicating UD was still pursuing Dayshon Scoothie Smith in light of the Davis verbal. I know one pundit described Davis as a SG in a PG body, but I thought he was being recruited as a PG. I thought that was Smith's position as well. Perhaps AM sees them both as being able to play either backcourt position.

Dayshon is supposedly transitioning to PG this year in hopes of getting a better look from schools. It never hurts to have guys who can handle and shoot, so this can only help him I would think. As much as I want to see him at Bona's it would be fun to say "Day-shon at Day-ton."

Flyer75, from a fan perspective, and perhaps even from a coaches' point of view you're correct. What about the viewpoint of a prospective recruit? Dillard is leaving, but Price comes in this season. A highly rated recruit, Davis has committed for 2013. Add in the possibility that Sanford might get minutes at PG, especially if AM wants Sanford and Seibert on the court together for a few minutes. Time at the SG position seems blocked for 2013 as well. I realize these guys by and large have confidence in their abilities, but anyone coming into UD to play the point has got climb over Price/Davis/Sanford to get minutes.Maybe AM is planning on going to alot of three guard sets.

Well, good points, but we are still in need of a true SG or even another CG. In two years we will only have 2 guards left in Price and Davis. That means plenty of PT for any would be sophomore that season.
