Re: Dayton Recruiting

E.C. Matthews to URI. Congrats to the Rams. UD had offered him also and I'm pretty sure X had too but not positive on that.

Re: Dayton Recruiting

That does look like a nice pick up by URI. On Scout, only Dayton, Arizona and USC are showing offering him. URI not listed.

Re: Dayton Recruiting

He had an odd recruitment. About a month or so ago, he came out with a final four list that included some bizarre teams and then he came out and said UD was still in the running and that we were one of 2-3 teams that were recruiting them the hardest. Then we land Davis and that probably ended that as he wanted to play PG according to everything being printed today on his commitment to URI. Who knows really...anyway, good pickup for them.

I don't always trust these pay sites, even thought I pay for them, but Rivals had offers from both UD and X. Also from UMass out of the A10.

College Hoops Recruiting Notebook (New York Post - September 22, 2012)
Curtis forward Hassan Martin and Christ the King guard Jon Severe are at Rhode Island for official visits.

Martin, a 6-foot-7 forward, is down to URI, St. Joseph's and Providence, his AAU coach Chris Alesi said. The 6-foot-2 Severe recently visited UMass and plans to take an official visit to Rutgers in the near future, possibly for the Big East school's Midnight Madness.

Bronx native Dayshon Smith of Putnam Science Academy (Conn.) is taking an official visit to Dayton this weekend he said, and recently added high-major scholarship offers from Illinois, Providence, and Penn State.

Team SCAN AAU coach, Terrence (Munch) Williams said Drexel, St. Joseph's and Temple went to see forward Terry Larrier of The Phelps School (Pa.).

Hofstra hosted guard Jaaron Simmons, a top guard from Bishop Alter, on Thursday and Friday, according to a source.

Dayshon Smith Talks About His Visit (Matt Schwade, FlyerHoops.net - September 24, 2012)
The Dayton Flyers hosted one of, if not the top target on their recruiting board this past weekend for an official visit. The Flyers have a commitment from one Rivals150 prospect already and are trying to add another.

WHAT? Yuma trying to recruit ANOTHER PG? With Davis' committment, why in the world would another PG want to go their?

In other words, how successful Miller might be in deceiving a HS Class of 2013 PG prospect into believing that PG # 1 6' Kyle Davis (who aspires to playing PG in the NBA sooner rather than later) would be happy to step aside and play SG at Dayton so that Dayshon Smith can accomodate PG # 28 as Dayton's Poing Guard.

Right. That's gonna happen.

I'd post 7-8 links about these kids but you get the point.

A10Fans Observations:

(1) If Dayshon Smith does commit to Dayton, he will be the third point guard on Dayton's Roster next season. Next year, none of Dayton's point guards will have the opportunity to learn from, or practice against, an upperclassman PG, which is very important to a freshman's development as an NCAA Division I player.

2)Dayshon Smith may not decide his college choice until spring 2013, which would give BCS-conference coaches another season to evaluate and offer Smith

3)Word was that Smith was a head case, so perhaps we shouldn't be surprised.

Let him go screw up at Dayton.

Re: Dayton Recruiting

Dayton in Pollard's Final Four (Doug Harris, DDN - September 26, 2012)
Kevin Pollard, an athletic wing for powerhouse Chicago Simeon Career Academy, will be visiting Dayton this weekend and has the Flyers in his final four choices.

The 6-foot-5 senior said he’s also considering Virginia Tech, Rhode Island, and Colorado State.

Pollard will be at UD from Friday morning to Sunday evening and has been recruited hard by Flyer coach Archie Miller.
Muddy's Observations:
(1) Doug Harris lifted his article straight from FlyerHoops.net (except for Kendall Pollard's first name).

(2) Kendall Pollard's first name isn't 'Kevin', and never has been.

(3) Douggie's grade for this article: F.

(4) If Kendall Pollard doesn't become a Flyer, it will likely be because Dayton's 2013-14 Roster is loaded with players who can play the wing forward position.

Possible 2012-13 Depth Chart* (Position: starter, first off the bench at each position.)

SG: Vee Sanford, Dyshawn Pierre, and Matt Derenbecker.

* Reserve roles will likely vary, depending on heights and strengths of opponents' players at each position.

Re: Dayton Recruiting

If Archie can land Scoochie and Pollard, this would be a heck of a recruiting class.

Re: Dayton Recruiting

From what I've read,Scoochie and Pollard were and are primary recruiting targets along with Davis for coach Miller. I'm just having a hard time with the need given the positions they play. Admittedly the conference is guard oriented. Next season UD will have Price, Davis Sibert and Sanford for guards. At least at guard I can understand playing three at a time, the ability to deploy the press or have ballhandlers on the court late in the game, anf Davis/Scoochie may be able to play both guard spots. With Derenbecker and Pierre the SF appears set. I would've thought the need for a SF would be for the 2014 recruiting class. Maybe the plan is to re shirt Pollard and let him morph into a Chris Johnson type player or they feel he can challenge for time right away. In any event, other then the PG position, I would've thought the priority would be to bring in at least one big guy to replace Benson & Kavs. Perhaps that search is a little more under the radar.

We will still have 3 guys next at 6-9. Alex, Scott, and Robinson. Even if we land Pollard and Smith we still have one ship left. Not to mention, 2013 is just a terrible year for big men. Just awful.

Flyer 75 thats 3 guys for two spots. At guard you've got Price, Davis, Scoochie,Sibert Sanford or five for two spots. Foul trouble or worse, an injury to any of the bigs would be a major problem. 2013 may not be the year of the big man, but I have to believe that between the high schools, prep schools, jucos and overseas there are 6' 8" and above guys that can contribute at the A-10 level. I'm not saying Scoochie and Pollard can't be impact players,, but I would've thought securing a big would be a major priority for the staff, and that could still be the case, the targets are just not out there publically.

Dayshon "Scoochie" Smith would be an excellent 'get' for Dayton, but I would not yet count him as a Flyer, as he has expressed interest in a number of schools in addition to Dayton.

In any event, Archie Miller has a number players on his 2013-14 Roster who can play more than one position, which will give Archie a lot of flexibility with the three remaining scholarships - one of which I expect Archie to hold until spring 2013 for a Division I transfer.

Of about 1,050 freshman men's basketball athletes at 340 D-I schools in their first two years of college:

• Only 60% continue into their third year at their original institution.

• Less than 2% leave early to play pro basketball.

• The other 38% leave. Most transfer, some drop out completely, a few others leave for undocumented professional opportunities.

NCAA president Mark Emmert said: "40% of men's basketball student-athletes aren't at their original school by the end of their sophomore year because they've transferred, they've dropped out, they've moved on."
In the spring of 2013, I would expect 400+ Division I players to tranfer. Many of these will be players from BCS conferences looking for more playing time in a conference such as the Atlantic 10.

Look for Archie to sign one of them, who will then sit out the Flyers' 2013-14 season.

This isn't a slight against Derenbecker or Sanford, but I'd be really surprised if Dyshawn Pierre isn't starting by his sophomore year. He may sneak into the starting rotation as a freshman at times. The kid is a player.

Re: Dayton Recruiting

I hope you're right Big Bill. Pierre looks to be one of those under the radar type players that a couple of rating services, not the pay ones, thought very very highly of. ESPN gave him a 92 rating, the highest of the 4 recruits we have coming in. He needs to work on his J but seems to have everything else in order, including the length to guard all over the court.

Here's a video of Kendall Pollard from Simeon HS in Chicago, IL (visiting UD on an official today). Probably wouldn't be an immediate impact player but looks to be a very similar player to Chris Johnson at this stage. I could see him playing some 3 as a freshmen. And I agree with Muddy, Oliver is capable of playing the 4 as a senior if needed.

Re: Dayton Recruiting

Pollard reminds me more of the steady stream of SF types that Temple always has. I really hope he comes to UD. Tall, insanely long arms, and athleticism for days. Imagine him and Pierre together for three years, with Davis and possibly Scoochie? Plus Robinson and Scott, and two years of Sibert. Hoo boy. Let's hope it happens.
