Simeon: No. 1 Montverde a Tall Task (Chicago Tribune - January 2, 2013)

Simeon coach Robert Smith stood near the free-throw line preparing to brick shot after shot Wednesday afternoon, Wolverines assistant coaches murmured their approval at the rebounding drill.

Smith figured the players could use some extra work considering Simeon's next opponent, Montverde (Fla.), features 6-foot-10 senior Dakari Johnson and 6-8 senior Devin Williams.

Montverde, ranked No. 1 in the country by ESPN, meets Simeon at the Cancer Research Classic on Saturday, January 5th in Wheeling, W.V.

"We haven't been blocking out well," Smith said. "We're going into a game against a team that's going to be bigger than us. We have to make sure we get back to the basics of blocking out and running and getting the basketball."

Smith thought the Wolverines warmed up well by facing 6-9 Curie junior Cliff Alexander on their way to the Pontiac Holiday Tournament title last week. But Montverde, which draws players from all over the country and boasts three of ESPN's top 100 ranked seniors, might be on a different level.

Johnson (No. 12) is unsigned. Williams (No. 85) is a West Virginia recruit, and point guard Kasey Hill (No. 9) is bound for Florida.

At the City of Palms Classic over winter break, Montverde knocked off Chicago Young 68-63 in overtime in a quarterfinal and won the championship game 66-45 against Lone Peak (Utah), a team that impressed Smith earlier this season. Johnson and Williams combined for 25 points and 22 rebounds in the title game.

When Dillard is gone, the leading candidates to "go to" in clutch situations would be Vee Sanford and Pierre, IMO. Both guys have a scorers mentality and skills. They are both guys who can create for themselves and hit shots inside and out. I particularly like Sanfords ability to hang in the air on short jumpers.

I'm going to have to hope that one of our pg's on next years roster will have the ball security and floor leadership of Dillard. That is a tall order for frosh. Khari Price is a nice security blanket, but undersized and not a scorer at this point.

Agreed Elvis. There is a chance Jordan Sibert could fill that role as well. I would say maybe Oliver, but probably not. Scoochie Smith and Kyle Davis will hopefully become creators by the end of next year.

I believe the Simeon vs Monteverde game is being telecast by ESPN2 at 6pm tonight. Viewers will get a chance to see how Pollard fares against the number 1 team. I believe an 'area' player whom UD has/had interest in, Justin Bibbs transferred to Monteverde.

Jabari Parker's Back, But Guards Go Missing (Chicago Tribune - January 5, 2013)

WHEELING, W.Va. — Jabari Parker confirmed his presence a few times Saturday during Simeon's 82-53 loss to Montverde. Like when he made two first-quarter 3-pointers, or when he unleashed a well of frustration with a one-handed dunk in the fourth quarter.

"Jabari, he's back," Simeon coach Robert Smith said of Parker's return from a fractured right foot.

Now Simeon, ranked 12th by ESPN and second by the Tribune, needs to locate its guards, Smith said.

Smith called out Illinois-bound guards Kendrick Nunn and Jaylon Tate, who combined for 10 points, four assists and six of Simeon's 19 turnovers in a loss to the team ranked No. 1 in the nation by ESPN.

"If Kendrick and Jaylon don't play, we're not going to be a very good team," Smith said. "They're committed to go to the University of Illinois. They've got to be better than that."

"They have to show up in these types of games."

Simeon (9-2) was severely overmatched by Montverde (16-0), a Florida prep school that draws players from all over the country.

Montverde went on a 10-0 run to start the second quarter and led 43-24 by halftime. Simeon seniors Russell Woods and Kendall Pollard got into foul trouble in the second half, and the Wolverines could do little to climb back in the game.

"We knew they had a strong six, seven (players), but we didn't expect them to come out and do that to us," Pollard said. "We were trying to speed up and play their game. We didn't play our game tonight."

I caught most of the game on tv, and Simeon was really outplayed. Announcers mentioned Justin Bibbs with a UD offer. He pit in a couple of nice jumpers from the free throw line. Any talk in the Dayton area as to how serious UD is pursuing him?

I think it depends on how much interest Bibbs has in UD. Same with Luke Kennard at Franklin. They have offers, and Archie will recruit them until he is told they won't be going to UD. I don't think either will end up at UD, but stranger things have happened.

The local kid I am interested most in is Kyle Ahrens from Versailles. He's a sophomore, and was getting interest from UD and other as a freshman. Already 6'4" and projects to a nice SG at the college level. The kid can play, and could well develop into a high level prospect.

I know for a fact that last year Mack also offered Bibbs when he was still at Dayton Chaminade-Julienne. I don't know how those offers last or if there are strings of any sorts. Do offers get withdrawn? I have no idea how it all works. I do know that Justin is a nice kid, from a nice family. I don't think he necessarily made the right decision to go to Monteverde (for him as a kid), but I know his parents made the decision because they believed it was a good decision. Any school that gets him, will be happy they did.

UD Recruits Living Up To Billing (Doug Harris, DDN - January 19, 2013)

Sean O’Mara was told by the Dayton basketball coaches to expect a charged-up crowd when he made an unofficial visit to the school for the Butler game, but the 6-foot-9 recruit from Chicago was still blown away by the vocal support for the Flyers.

“That’s the craziest atmosphere I’ve ever seen. I don’t know if you could fit any more people in that gym,” the Benet Academy junior said.

“(UD Arena) is a great place. And it seems like they get everybody out for every game. It’s going to be exciting to keep watching and see how they keep doing.”

Chicago-based recruiting analyst Joe Hendricksen said the Dayton coaches have been making inroads in the region and their program has gained the respect it needs to compete with schools from top conferences.

Second-year coach Archie Miller has signed guard Kyle Davis of Morgan Park High School and wing Kendall Pollard of Chicago Simeon. Davis is rated as the sixth-best senior in Illinois, while Pollard is ninth.

“They’ve done an outstanding job in the city of Chicago, both Archie and (assistant) Tom Ostrom,” Hendricksen said. “This is a very good class in Illinois, and Dayton has 20 percent of the top-10. That’s saying a lot.”

While Davis (No. 112) and Smith (No. 124) have cracked the Rivals.com list of top-150 seniors nationally, Pollard is an unsung talent for a three-time defending state champion and he has been matched up daily in practice against Duke-bound Jabari Parker, the nation’s No. 2 recruit.

Parker has said Pollard is the toughest defender he’s ever faced.


Dayshon Smith, a 6-2 guard for Putnam Science Academy in Connecticut, made the New England Recruiting Report list of top-50 seniors in the Northeast at No. 8. He’s the third-highest rated guard in the region, which includes Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine.

“He’s definitely a high-major talent,” said ESPN recruiting analyst Adam Finkelstein, who compiles the report. “He had high-major offers when he decided to go to Dayton, and he’d certainly have more if he was uncommitted now. He’s a great value for those guys.”

Finkelstein said Smith is capable of either making plays with the ball or moving without it and scoring off his jump-shot.

“I think at the next level, once he gets some coaching, he’ll be especially dangerous. … He’s doing a lot on natural talent without being coached at a high level. Once he learns some things about the game, with his versatility, it’s going to be open up a whole new world for his game.”

Mustang guard Kyle Davis scored 22 of his 25 points in the first half when his team constructed a 53-13 lead.

Davis had four three-pointers and a dunk in the first 16 minutes before giving way to the reserves in the fourth quarter.

Miller Has High Hopes for Sibert (Doug Harris, DDN - January 24, 2013)

Jordan Sibert may have played at the top level of college basketball for two years, but he doesn’t see a drastic drop-off in talent after transferring from Ohio State to Dayton.

The 6-foot-4 guard from Cincinnati Princeton has been practicing with the Flyers while waiting to become eligible next season and has been stretched by the caliber of competition he faces each day.

"These boys can ball," he said of his new teammates.

Sibert can, too, of course. The 2010 Gatorade player of the year in Ohio will be a junior next year and believes he’s improved since his days as a sub for the Buckeyes.

"He’s practicing every day and makes us better. And if he was on our team right now, you’d have a hard time keeping him off the floor" Miller said.

The Flyers will lose senior point guard Kevin Dillard next year, but they return guards Vee Sanford and Khari Price, who are major contributors this season. They’re also bringing in two backcourt recruits in Kyle Davis and Dayshon Smith who are ranked among the top-150 prospects in the nation.

"Jordan and Vee should be a very, very good duo at times," Miller said.

"With our young guys coming in, we should be able to play more of those guys and (Sibert and Sanford) will be able to play lesser minutes and be more fresh. He’s going to be key. And he knows that."
