Dayton Flyers 2009-10 Depth Chart with 2008-09 Scoring (5 Seniors):

PG: London Warren (6-0 Sr./ 4.1 PPG), Rob Lowery (6-2 Sr./ 7.5 PPG)
SG: Marcus Johnson (6-3 Sr./ 11.8 PPG), Mickey Perry (6-2 Sr./ 4.6 PPG), Paul Williams (6-4 Soph./ 2.2 PPG)
SF: Chris Wright (6-8 Jr./ 13.3 PPG), Chris Johnson (6-5 Soph./ 6.3 PPG), Luke Fabrizius (6-9 Soph./ 4.3 PPG)
PF: Devin Searcy (6-10 Jr./ 2.8 PPG), Josh Benson (6-10 Fr./ DNP)
C: Kurt Huelsman (6-10 Sr./ 3.6 PPG), Matt Kavanaugh (6-10 Fr./ DNP)

Brian Gregory has 6 scholarships available for the 2010 Class (the 5 present seniors plus Stephen Thomas’ scholarship) and the following wish list:

1 point guard
1 shooting guard
2 combo guards
1 combo forward
Adreian Payne

The point guard scholarship went to Juwan Staten.

At the present time, Brandon Spearman and Jalen Steele are the front-runners for the shooting guard scholarship.

Both combo guard scholarships have now been awarded, the first going to Drake transfer Josh Parker, who will be a junior in 2010-11 (Josh Parker video) and the second to Jesse Berry.

The combo forward scholarship went to Ralph Hill, who appears to be a slightly bigger version of multi-skilled, athletic Chris Johnson. Brian Gregory was in early on both Ralph Hill and Chris Johnson, and both flew under the national radar (i.e. head coaches of BCS-conference schools and the basketball recruiting websites) before committing to Dayton. As you recall, Chris Johnson was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie team in March 2009, which was quite an accomplishment for a reserve SF playing behind Chris Wright. At 6’-5” Chris Johnson is quite capable of playing the SG position against opponents’ taller SGs. Brian Gregory is very keen to stock his roster with players who can play 2 positions – “interchangeable parts” as he calls them – and is doing a great job of so.

The sixth and final scholarship available for 2010 is being held for PF/C Adreian Payne, who may or may not commit to Dayton. As many of you know already, Payne is still very raw, but has incredible upside potential. If Payne commits elsewhere, Brian Gregory may offer it to another 2010 prospect or hold the scholarship for a 2011 prospect.

It is relevant to ask how much UD’s recruiting has improved since Brian Gregory was named head coach of the Dayton Flyers.

This question is best answered by looking at the last two recruiting classes that were signed by Oliver Purnell before he left for Clemson:

University of Dayton Prospects: HS Class of 2002 (Scout.com)

University of Dayton Prospects: HS Class of 2003 (Scout.com)

If Chris Wright has a monster season in 2009-10 (i.e. 18 PPG, 8 RPG, 50% FGs, and 40% from 3-point range) he may well forego his senior year at UD and head to the NBA a year early as a first-round draft pick. However, given the very strong field of players who will likely be in the 2010 NBA Draft, coupled with Derrick Brown's disappointing # 40 selection in the 2009 NBA Draft, I consider it far more likely that Wright will play his senior year at UD.

If Wright does leave early for the NBA, the Flyers will still have junior Chris Johnson, junior Luke Fabrizius, and freshman Ralph Hill available to man the 3-spot in 2010-11. This means that Brian Gregory will not find himself in Chris Mack's situation of having to waste a valuable scholarship on a career pine-jockey in a desperate attempt to fill a hole in the roster after the unexpected departure of the team's best player.

Dayton has not passed Xavier as a program yet, but as each season goes by, Brian Gregory has been building a stronger roster and closing the gap between the Flyers and the Musketeers. I believe it is likely that the Flyers will win the Atlantic 10 Conference this season and continue to improve relative to Xavier and the rest of the Atlantic 10 basketball teams. However, that is only one man's humble opinion. As always, we'll see . . .

xu95, here are Muddy’s latest odds (updated today):

Dayton: 25 %
Michigan State: 20 %
Kentucky: 20 %
West Virginia: 20 %
Ohio State: 15 %
Akron: 0 %
Arizona: 0 %
Xavier: 0 %

Total: 100 %

Therefore, while I consider Dayton to be the frontrunner for signing Payne, it is my opinion that there is only a 1-in-4 chance of that actually happening. The probabilities listed above imply that there is a 40 % chance that Payne will play for a school in Ohio and a 60 % chance that he will play for a school outside of Ohio.

The NCAA Rules allow a prospect to take 6 official visits (i.e. paid for by the University, and only after the autumn school term begins) and Payne has stated on a couple of occasions that he plans to take all 6 official visits before he makes a decision. If Payne sticks to that, we should know which 6 schools he intends to visit by early September, and he should announce his decision by the end of October.

Then again, Adreian Payne might do something else.

The early signing date for National Letters of Intent for HS Class of 2010 prospects is in early November 2009. A lot can happen between now and then.

Akron: 0 %
Dayton 0%
Arizona: 0 % I'm going to say they have a better chance than Dayton since they are still on his list. That would make it >0%

Way to avoid the question MW/Prop/2link. No way does MW risk losing his last bastion of delusion. Why he even bothered to put Ariz,Akron, and X in his %'s is further proof of his fixation on all things Xavier.

I actually hope that he does commit to the cryers because X's championships will be even sweeter then. These guys are already predicting the best back court in the A10 for years to come.

Posted on the "Rick Majerus" thread:

However, UD was put on probation by the NCAA for 3 years within the past decade.

That is embarrassing.
X Factor,

While your post was factually correct, it didn't have anything to do with Rick Majerus. It was not exactly a "current news" item either, as the offense occured 11 years ago:

NCAA Tells Dayton It Must Pay Price For Its Violations (Los Angeles Times - April 19, 2000)

The NCAA put Dayton's basketball program on three years' probation Tuesday on violations that included loans a university trustee made to the father of a recruit.

The recruit, 6-foot-6 freshman Brooks Hall, helped lead the Flyers to the NCAA tournament this season.

The NCAA limited to 12 the scholarships it can offer for the 2001-02 academic year and to four the number of expenses-paid recruiting visits in 2000-01. Penalties could have included a ban on televised appearances and postseason play.

Coach Oliver Purnell said he didn't think the sanctions will affect the competitiveness of the team, which was 22-9 and lost to Purdue, 62-61, in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

"It's not a happy day for the university, but we are glad that this chapter is behind us and now we can move forward while learning from this situation," he said.

The NCAA said university trustee Clayton Mathile made personal loans totaling $32,000 to Chuck Hall, the father of Brooks, in August and September of 1998.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Perhaps you can move forward as well.

Muddy, I can move on, but can you? You always dredge up old threads (ie. the "Stan says..." thread) every few months just to get people going.

If this kid ends up at SLU, then yes, they deserve to be blasted. I was just pointing that UD hasn't been a sqeaky clean program themselves while SLU hasn't done anything wrong, yet. It does look bad on the surface though, if Majerus is still actively recruiting him.

X Factor, don't forget about Stealth! He has a whole library put together of anything that has to do with Xavier. Reference the above post about a player that is no longer in the program. They always say "next year" but realize it never materializes so they go back to the tried or worn out.

At least students were not planning on protesting this only to have the University quash it.

Student safety concerns derail demonstration
Brian Bowsher, Patrick Stevenson, Matthew finger
Staff

A demonstration planned by a group of Xavier students concerned with recent developments involving rape on campus was cancelled at the recommendation of university officials over concerns for student safety.

The demonstration, scheduled for the Dec. 5 men’s basketball game against Detroit, was to involve students holding signs reading “Xavier can stop rape” during the first time out of the game. The event was planned in the wake of a number of recent rape allegations.

Senior Jessie Fullenkamp, who helped organize the demonstration, stated that the event was not in response to any particular rape case. Rather, the demonstration was intended as an effort to help raise awareness of rape issues on campus.
Controversy has swelled recently as a result of increased reports of rape on campus. High profile cases involving junior C.J. Anderson and senior Michael Walker have grabbed the attention of the Xavier community.

The Anderson case in particular has raised questions about Xavier’s policies on rape and sexual violence. A judicial review board recommended Anderson’s expulsion in early October, however, that decision was later reversed on appeal.

It's good to see how concerned X is with student safety. It could be really dangerous for students to hold up signs at a time out. Thank God they stopped that for the good of the students themselves.

And kudos to the appeal board for overturning the judicial review boards decision. Xavier really needed extra scoring punch, and that had not been considered by the judicial review board.

From Jerry Meyer, Rivals.com national basketball recruiting analyst.

Meyer's Mailbag

Leaving Ohio?
When did Adreian Payne say he wanted to play outside of Ohio? Not saying that he didn't, but if he had the entire city of Dayton would have exploded when he said that, and I haven't heard a thing mentioned about it.

-- Alan from Dayton, Ohio
-----
Payne told Rivals.com's Brian Snow in early July at the King City Classic that he wanted to go to school outside the state of Ohio. Then this past week in Orlando, Fla., he told Snow that he is down to a final list of Kentucky, Michigan State, Arizona, West Virginia and Kansas.

Although Payne has not publicly named a leader, there is a lot of talk that Kentucky is the team to beat at this point.
Where has Alan from Dayton been?

Snow knows more about recruiting than you Flyer dorks, but you just couldn't wrap your minds around the fact that Payne wanted to get the heck out of Dayton.

They still don't want to admit that Snow is a ton more accurate than Matt Schwade (or however the hell you say his name). Maybe Payne didn't tell him he wanted out of Ohio because he didn't want to see a grown man cry.

I don't think anyone has said that someone was more accurate than anyone else regarding Payne. When you're reporting conflicting information every two days you're going to be questioned. That's how it works. His last report turned out to be pretty accurate, which is good. But do I also get credit for finding my keys in the last place I look after an hour of frustrated searching? The credit he gets is in his hard work and dedication to his job. That's admirable.

It was obvious to many people in and around the situation that Payne was going to choose either UD, WVU, or Kentucky months ago. The type of kid Adreian is, the coaches he and his family seemed to like best, the fact that with these schools his grandma can attend many games a year...it wasn't a secret. Snow had to see the same things. I just wish he would have brought that levelheadedness when he punched in on the timeclock instead of running around to multiple message boards posting info that left himself chasing his tail.

Five Questions: Dayton Assistant Coach Jon Borovich (College ChalkTalk - August 10, 2009)

Jon talks about Josh Benson, Matt Kavanaugh, Rob Lowery's recovery, and the seven returning Flyers seniors.

Orlando INKlings (Kentucky INK - UK Wildcats Weblog - July 26, 2009) Excerpt:

- Wouldn't be surprised to see UK find a way to get in the living room of Juwan Staten, point guard for All-Ohio, who is a Dayton commit.

Cal [UK Head Coach John Calipari] really liked him last week at Peach Jam and with good reason.

Staten can play either style and is a perfect fit for Cal because he can flat out shoot.

I am told by folks that perhaps no other coach or staff in the country work as hard as the group from UD when it comes to recruiting.

Forget Payne--it didn't happen --its not going to happen---and everyone that knows him--- or his group of friends------ know that UD is no longer an option .

That doesn't change the fact that UD under BG has gotten into more homes of greater talent than any other coach in UD basketball history---so whats next?--you have sign some of those guys. Gregory does.

Chris Wright is from my home town--and I have friends that once were members of the UD coaching staff---EVERYONE that I speak to, tell me the same story-----If a kid that Dayton is recruiting walks across the street----gregory (or staff) is there to watch.

Gregory makes contact very early, as he has a keen eye for the type of player he likes. Once he picks a target---he or staff make their presence known. EVERYWHERE!

They are relentless!

I can't tell you how many High School coaches have told me how impressive the effort is from the UD staff. Many say they've never seen anything like it.

The staff does this in a coy type of way. They don't seek out the player---or make a scene---they do give the impression to the kid that he is SO important that everything he does is note worthy. So without harrassing or stalking a kid--they make him and his friends know how special he is.

Many times before other schools get involved, UD is way ahead of other programs, They find that UD knows the kid---has a working relationship with the kid---and kids are crazy about the UD coach and staff.

They simply out work every other program.

They do a great job of letting a kid know that they appreciate him and his talent---They are also very open and honest with kids they're after..

Gregory told Chris Wright while the kid was in high school--You may think you're a great player now, but you need alot of work.

Forget Payne---it doesn't change the fact that when Dayton takes the floor against a squad from a major program or conference--they are not at a dissadvantage athletically, they are just as fast or faster, can out jump most programs in the nation and size is not an issue.

Thats called recruiting. And this coach is one of the best at doing it.

Woody Hayes once said
Quote
“I've had smarter people around me all my life, but I haven't run into one yet that can outwork me. And if they can't outwork you, then smarts aren't going to do them much good. That's just the way it is".
End Quote

I don't know if Brian Gregory's ever ran into anyone that can out work him.

Flyers Keeping Tabs on Two Highly-touted Wayne Stars (Doug Harris, DDN - August 21, 2009)

They’re believed to be the only local prospects in the 2011 class to receive scholarship offers from the University of Dayton, and they’re getting plenty of attention from some high-profile schools around the nation.

Markus Crider has visited UD, Cincinnati, Notre Dame and Xavier, while Travis Trice II has checked out those four plus Ohio State and Butler. And they’ll be taking tours together of Notre Dame again and Michigan in the coming weeks.

Juniors Markus Crider and Travis Trice II of Wayne High School are on several midwestern schools’ radar for 2011

(Justin) Martin averaged about 11 points as a junior.

Xavier's two commitments from Lawrenceville North High School (Indiana) averaged a combined 14.5 points per game in 2008-09.
By comparison:

Juwan Staten averaged 21.0 PPG in 2008-09.

Ralph Hill: "The athletic wing averaged 19 points and nine rebounds as a junior."

Jesse Berry: "The 6-foot-1 senior-to-be averaged 27.5 points as a junior last season — second in Indiana high school ranks".

Brandon Spearman: "Spearman averaged 15 points and seven rebounds as a junior last season."

Lawrence North 63, Chicago Simeon 61 (Indianapolis Star - December 20, 2008)

Brandon Spearman (23 points including 3 treys) dominated Justin Martin (6 points including 1 trey) at both ends of the court in their only head-to-head match-up. That says a whole lot.

Similarly to Chris Johnson (who was named to the All-Atlantic 10 Rookie Team), Ralph Hill is seriously under-rated. Ralph Hill dominated Ohio State commitment J.D. Weatherspoon in their most recent head-to-head matchup:

BG likely has found a pretty good find with Hill, an under the radar type...Hill plays in a very competitive league. and he's pretty much the team so his soph year they only won 3 games and they were 13-10 this year.

The best game of the year for Ralph Hill was against Ohio big boys prep state champ, Rival 5star & Ohio's most lusted player & tOSU recruit Jared Sullinger where Hill scored 25 in a 3 pt loss.

Another good sign on the recruiting trail is BG offered him early and Hill has accepted turning down attempts by ND & Georgia Tech wishes for Hill to postpone his decision until later this summer (post AAU season).

Juwan Staten and Jesse Berry have dominated just about everyone they have played against.

Sounds like some of those guys (Hill particularly) play for pretty crappy teams. I'm not going to get too excited by some guy who probably takes at least 60% of his teams shots, scoring 25+. I'm not saying that it is bad, or that Hill isn't going to pan out, but let's at least be realistic here.

"I am told by folks that perhaps no other coach or staff in the country work as hard as the group from UD when it comes to recruiting."
Indeed.

Brian Gregory has taken recruiting to a new level at Dayton.

When Oliver Purnell was Dayton's coach, you didn't see high school players he turned away get scholarship offers from SEC schools.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fulton Guard Steele Gets Offer from Auburn During Official Visit (Sept. 6, 2009)

Fulton High School senior Jalen Steele picked up his first major Division I basketball offer Sunday during his official visit to Auburn University.

The 6-foot-2 guard/wing has plenty of options from which to choose.

He was on the verge of committing to Dayton earlier this summer. But the Flyers received a commitment from another recruit.

Steele re-opened his recruitment and, consequently, is now in prime position of being a future SEC player.

If he's only eyeing the SEC, one competitor Auburn might face for Steele's services is rival Alabama. The Tide's first-year coach Anthony Grant recruited Steele while he was coach at VCU, and Grant is back in the mix for Steele again.

Steele has helped Fulton win back-to-back Class AA state title. A highly efficient scorer with a penchant for defense, Steele averaged 21.3 points per game last season.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As you recall, Brian Gregory withdrew his offer to Jalen Steele after Jesse Berry (27.5 PPG) committed to Dayton at the beginning of July.

That sure beats stealing players from High Point and Wabash College to fill a roster.

Auburn? Really? Better? Really? I hope Auburn works out for him and it is a BCS school but have you even looked at AU record since 01-02???

01-02: 11-16
02-03: 21-11 (2 NCAA wins)
03-04: 14-14
04-05: 14-17
05-06: 12-16
06-07: 17-15
07-08: 14-16
08-09: 24-12 (2 NIT wins)

In that time span AU is 5-3 vs. the A10, there 3 losses being to X and UD. Had he chosen KY, Tenn, Duke, or UNC over UD then I'd understand a little better. It had been speculated for months with JS that he was holding out for "bigger and better". We'll he got bigger and better in in the sense that he goes to a bigger conf but it's debatable if he choose better in the since of winning percentage and a one game adv. in the NCAA.
