Dayton Flyers 2009-10 Depth Chart with 2008-09 Scoring (5 Seniors):

PG: London Warren (6-0 Sr./ 4.1 PPG), Rob Lowery (6-2 Sr./ 7.5 PPG)
SG: Marcus Johnson (6-3 Sr./ 11.8 PPG), Mickey Perry (6-2 Sr./ 4.6 PPG), Paul Williams (6-4 Soph./ 2.2 PPG)
SF: Chris Wright (6-8 Jr./ 13.3 PPG), Chris Johnson (6-5 Soph./ 6.3 PPG), Luke Fabrizius (6-9 Soph./ 4.3 PPG)
PF: Devin Searcy (6-10 Jr./ 2.8 PPG), Josh Benson (6-10 Fr./ DNP)
C: Kurt Huelsman (6-10 Sr./ 3.6 PPG), Matt Kavanaugh (6-10 Fr./ DNP)

Brian Gregory has 6 scholarships available for the 2010 Class (the 5 present seniors plus Stephen Thomas’ scholarship) and the following wish list:

1 point guard
1 shooting guard
2 combo guards
1 combo forward
Adreian Payne

The point guard scholarship went to Juwan Staten.

At the present time, Brandon Spearman and Jalen Steele are the front-runners for the shooting guard scholarship.

Both combo guard scholarships have now been awarded, the first going to Drake transfer Josh Parker, who will be a junior in 2010-11 (Josh Parker video) and the second to Jesse Berry.

The combo forward scholarship went to Ralph Hill, who appears to be a slightly bigger version of multi-skilled, athletic Chris Johnson. Brian Gregory was in early on both Ralph Hill and Chris Johnson, and both flew under the national radar (i.e. head coaches of BCS-conference schools and the basketball recruiting websites) before committing to Dayton. As you recall, Chris Johnson was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie team in March 2009, which was quite an accomplishment for a reserve SF playing behind Chris Wright. At 6’-5” Chris Johnson is quite capable of playing the SG position against opponents’ taller SGs. Brian Gregory is very keen to stock his roster with players who can play 2 positions – “interchangeable parts” as he calls them – and is doing a great job of so.

The sixth and final scholarship available for 2010 is being held for PF/C Adreian Payne, who may or may not commit to Dayton. As many of you know already, Payne is still very raw, but has incredible upside potential. If Payne commits elsewhere, Brian Gregory may offer it to another 2010 prospect or hold the scholarship for a 2011 prospect.

It is relevant to ask how much UD’s recruiting has improved since Brian Gregory was named head coach of the Dayton Flyers.

This question is best answered by looking at the last two recruiting classes that were signed by Oliver Purnell before he left for Clemson:

University of Dayton Prospects: HS Class of 2002 (Scout.com)

University of Dayton Prospects: HS Class of 2003 (Scout.com)

If Chris Wright has a monster season in 2009-10 (i.e. 18 PPG, 8 RPG, 50% FGs, and 40% from 3-point range) he may well forego his senior year at UD and head to the NBA a year early as a first-round draft pick. However, given the very strong field of players who will likely be in the 2010 NBA Draft, coupled with Derrick Brown's disappointing # 40 selection in the 2009 NBA Draft, I consider it far more likely that Wright will play his senior year at UD.

If Wright does leave early for the NBA, the Flyers will still have junior Chris Johnson, junior Luke Fabrizius, and freshman Ralph Hill available to man the 3-spot in 2010-11. This means that Brian Gregory will not find himself in Chris Mack's situation of having to waste a valuable scholarship on a career pine-jockey in a desperate attempt to fill a hole in the roster after the unexpected departure of the team's best player.

Dayton has not passed Xavier as a program yet, but as each season goes by, Brian Gregory has been building a stronger roster and closing the gap between the Flyers and the Musketeers. I believe it is likely that the Flyers will win the Atlantic 10 Conference this season and continue to improve relative to Xavier and the rest of the Atlantic 10 basketball teams. However, that is only one man's humble opinion. As always, we'll see . . .

The great thing about Devin Oliver is that he won't have to be great. That's a testament to how well BG is doing on the recruiting circuit. A three star recruit is viewed as a role player upon first glance.

I like the get. Sounds like he can do a bit of everything but as of now he's not great at anything. Nothing wrong with that.

I love the 2010 class. Spearman, Berry, Oliver, and Hill are all talented recruits that looked to be just under the so called BCS umbrella. Maybe that chip on their shoulder gives them some extra motivation. One thing is for sure, if Staten turns out to be as good as advertised, there's no telling what everyone else can accomplish.

#162 ·
Excellent, excellent points. Oliver may even redshirt so it's not like he has to be the savior of basketball for us. He'll have time to develop...another luxury that Gregory's recruiting has finally brought us. Before, we seemed to never be able to redshirt or develop players while X could buy their new players time. Benson was able to redshirt, not by choice, but it didn't kill our season, and Oliver is open to a redshirt if need be. Refreshing.

#153 ·
Don't take this the wrong way, but I don't think Gregory can keep recruiting 2 star players and hoping they turn into great players. Ralph Hill and Devin Oliver are both 2 star players according to Rivals. Oliver isn't even found in ESPN's recruiting database.

Chris Johnson was a 3 star Rivals player and went overlooked, but it looks like he will turn out to be an excellent player for the Flyers. However, when 2 out of your 5 recruits are 2 stars or less, I'm not sure that will get UD to the next level.

These are the type of guys Purnell used to snag left and right.

#154 ·
Except that's ALL OP would snag. BG is snagging these guys to go along with CW, P. Williams, B. Spearman, J. Staten, and J. Benson. If we were only getting Ralph Hill and Oliver then I'd be a little worried but there's a reason that UD's recruiting class is currently a Top 20 class, for the first time in what...20 some years???

But anyway, both Hill and Oliver, especially Oliver, had some big offers they could've taken. For Oliver both Butler and Iowa offered early but then withdrew when they got others to commit. I'm not worried about these guys. I've said it once, I'll say it again...for every CW out there there is a Churchill Odia...for every Odia, you then get a guy like D. Brown who turns out great.

Also, at some point you have to quit calling it "luck" for BG. He's landed some unsung talent so far. Brian Roberts, Chris Johnson, and from reading reports it def looks like we got a good one in Berry and possibly Hill and Oliver.

More on Devin Oliver:

Kazoo All-Stater to Dayton (Steve Bell, mlive.com - October 18, 2009)

While Doug Anderson was the Youtube dunking sensation for last season's Kalamazoo Central Class A runner-up team, it was 6-foot-6 junior Devin Oliver who developed into the Maroon Giants' best all-around player. And, one with good grades, which is why he'll be good to go to sign early with Dayton, the school to which he committed today, Sunday.

With his size and range on the wing, Oliver will be no worse than a solid A-10 player. With physical maturity to finish drives and some dog in him, he could be much more.

Lanky Kalamazoo Central Junior Oliver Excels in Spotlight (April 1, 2009) Excerpt:

Kalamazoo Central junior wing Devin Oliver, right, drives to the basket past the defense of Detroit Pershing's Dennis Perry, left, and Tevon Conrad, center, during Saturday's Class A state championship game. Oliver had a team-high 21 points and nine rebounds in the Maroon Giants' loss, serving notice that he'll be among the state's top players next season

"I played well in that game," Oliver recalled Tuesday, referring to his 24-point, 12-rebound, three-assist, two-steal effort against one of the top teams in Class B. "The atmosphere, it just helps me play better. I like it when more people are watching."

All eyes are on the silky-smooth 6-foot-5 junior now. Oliver, who helped lead K-Central to a 25-2 season and a runner-up finish in the Class A state tournament, has been chosen the Gazette's Classes A-B player of the year for 2008-09.

The lanky left-hander, an Associated Press first-team all-stater who has drawn comparisons to Tayshaun Prince and Jalen Rose, is an up-and-comer on the state of Michigan's college basketball recruiting landscape. Oliver said he's receiving the most attention from the University of Michigan, Dayton, Stanford and Iowa.

He led the Maroon Giants in several categories this season, including points (18.0 per game), rebounds (8.1/game) and steals (more than four per game). Oliver also tallied 6.5 assists and 1.5 blocks per contest.

Oliver is versatile, and not only on the court. He is liked by peers, and has a good sense of humor. He's serious about his studies, though -- his mother, Amy Oliver, said her son got his first "B" this school year, after earning all "A's" in his first two years.

Dayton Flyers' 2010 Recruiting Class:

Juwan Staten averaged 21.0 PPG in 2008-09.

Ralph Hill: "The athletic wing averaged 19 points and nine rebounds as a junior."

Jesse Berry: "The 6-foot-1 senior-to-be averaged 27.5 points as a junior last season — second in Indiana high school ranks".

Brandon Spearman: "Spearman averaged 15 points and seven rebounds as a junior last season."

Devin Oliver led the Maroon Giants in several categories this season, including points (18.0 per game), rebounds (8.1/game) and steals (more than four per game). Oliver also tallied 6.5 assists and 1.5 blocks per contest

Transfer Josh Parker (who will sit out the 2009-10 season) averaged 10.7 PPG at Drake his sophomore year, shooting 45.2 % from the field, 43.2 % on 3-pointers and 72.0 % from the free-throw line.

Wednesday, November 11th is the first day that HS Class of 2010 recruits can submit their National Letter of Intent to the school of their choice.

Wednesday looks to be another good day for the Flyer Faithful:

Dayton Flyers HS Class of 2010 Recruit Rankings (ESPN / Scouts Inc.)

ESPN / Scouts Inc. rates combo-forward Ralph Hill as the Brian Gregory's lowest-rated recruit, but he appears to be quite similar to Chris Johnson and like Chris Johnson, Ralph Hill hails from Columbus and flew under the national recruiting radar. And like many of Brian Gregory's recruits, Hill is poised for a monster senior year:

Athletes of the Week: Ralph Hill (Columbus Dispatch - December 22, 2007)

RALPH HILL - WESTERVILLE NORTH, BASKETBALL

Ralph Hill, a 6-foot-6 sophomore forward, scored 70 points in two games. He had 29 points, 12 rebounds, two blocks and two steals in a 69-54 loss to Olentangy. In a 65-52 upset of Dublin Coffman, Hill scored a school-record 41 points and had 12 rebounds, three blocks and three steals. For the week, he shot 52 percent from the field (57.1 from three-point range) and made 24 of 27 free throws (88.9 percent).

The rankings are interesting to look at and debate, but the numbers above speak for themselves. The kid has game.

So does the Flyers' highest-rated recruit, Juwan Staten:

2009-2010 Oak Hill Academy Warriors Basketball Schedule

Opponents of Interest:

January 16, 2010: Northland HS, OH (AAU teammates Jared Sullinger and J.D. Weatherspoon)

February 2, 2010: Mountain State Academy (Xavier commitment Justin Martin)

February 3, 2010: Oak Ridge Military Academy (Xavier commitment Jay Canty)

February 28, 2010: Mountain State Academy (Xavier commitment Justin Martin)

He had no stars whatsoever until he verballed to the Flyers yesterday. That is very odd considering his acheivements last year. He was a late bloomer, growing 3 inches in the last 18 months and not starting varsity until late in highschool. It reminds me of a few other UD guys over the past few years. I remember some Xavier fans making a big deal over Benson's 2 stars. I think Kavanaugh was 2 stars until someone outside of Dayton seriously evaluated him. You guys are star-crossed.

You say that when your guy has no stars. I guarantee if he was a five star recruit that would have been the first thing you mentioned.

Not sure really on that...nor do I really care but it'd be safe to say I'd be worried about ANY PLAYER going division college basketball who only got 3 minutes a game in high school...I don't care where they played at. You have to at least realize the fact that said player has basically zero experience going into A10 and OOC play, even at the high school level...that would worry me and it would worry me even more that said player is going to be called upon from game one to perform and contribute. It would then scare me to death if said player is a team injury away from having to START for my team. My point is that no matter how good said player is/was/will be, he basically hasn't played much basketball at all int he last 2 years, even at the high school level.

#173 ·
Well, it's one of two things. Either the midget can recruit at a really high level, but can't develop players worth squat, or he gets underachievers and gets them perform at a level just below making the tourney consistently because he can't coach in game much. Either he gets good players and can't coach them up or gets crappy players and can coach them up.

I def agree with your last line Muddy. I think A10fan just doesn't want to admit the run UD could make the next 5 years so he has to throw X under the bus at the same time even though 99.9% of X fans would say that X is poised for more success the next 5 years. I mean, most X fans on other boards are making wagers on when the Final Four will happen, and I'm pretty sure A10fan is one of them, so he can't say, even X isn't guaranteed another 5-6 year run and then turn around and say that we're setting ourselves up for a Final Four run in the next 10 years. This year may be there only bump in the road. A10fan is having a hard time admitting that in 2-3 short years, UD's recruiting has caught up to X's. Now will that translate into the success X has had? Only time will tell.

Wow that's a stretch. Sure UD COULD make a run of 5 years but let's see what happens after this class graduates and whether CW sticks around. If he bolts I don't think you'll find too many people predicting big things next year much less 4 years down the road. I am definitely not tossing X under the bus but I realize how hard it is to make the tourny every year from outside the major BCS schools. It seems that the only ones able to stay consistent have been X,Memphis, and Gonzaga. That's it.

2-3 short years? What happened to oompa loompa's other years? I'm actually glad that the A10 (and the cryers) are picking up good recruits. It just makes the consecutive streaks and deep runs all the more enjoyable. You just seem to be way out over your skis with a 5-6 run prediction based on the history of this league and UD in particular.

I don't think Xavier fans are dismissing all of Dayton and Gregory's recruiting, just this one kid. I mean, how excited are Dayton fans really about a player that no one had heard of until he committed to Dayton and is expected to redshirt? If UD didn't land this recruit would Dayton fans have been devestated? A lot of people say they don't care about recruiting rankings and things like that but when it comes down to it if Dayton whiffed on this kid and he signed with another school UD fans would not have felt as bad as they did when they were eliminated from the Payne sweepstakes. Congratulations to UD if this is someone you are actually excited about having Oliver commit but I know if Xavier had another scholarship to give and they added someone that the recruiting services had never heard of to a top 20 class I would be more confused than I was excited.

I have to agree with most of this...was this a must get player? Probably not...if he turns out to be another Brob then we can say, "ya, we really needed him." Probably not fair to say that no one had heard of him...obviously Butler, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, and USC had and were interested. To me this kid is hopefully another piece to the puzzle but probably won't be the center piece. Quite honestly the only way to evaluate the 2010 class is in comparison to who they will be replacing.

Here's what I mean. We lose Perry, Warren, Lowery, Huelsman, and M. Johnson. Also a high probability we lose CW but I'm not going to put him in the equation this early in the season. So let's go with the 5. We are replacing them with transfer Josh Parker (43% from 3pt land at Drake), Juwan Staten, Brandon Spearman, Jessie Berry, Ralph Hill, and now Devin Oliver. You have to say the incoming class is better then what we are losing. Please, A10fan and PM, just stay out of this because you two have relentlessly bashed Warren and Huelsman (at times justifiably so). If I ever see on here how UD is going to have a hard time replacing KH and LW I'll probably puke because according to X fans, these two are the dregs of the A10. The loss of MJ hurts no doubt, and Perry and Lowery are replaceable. The 2010 class is without a doubt the BEST class UD has brought in (on paper) in 20+ years.

Finally, what I like about the players that we have coming in next year is that they are proven winners against good competition. None of these guys (Hill comes the closest) play against Divsion IV Ohio competition. Like what was said earlier...Oliver was a first team All State as a junior. This sounds almost like a carbon copy of C. Johnson and Berry. All players who bloomed late, big schools jump on them late, but BG has beaten these schools to the punch. IF Oliver had been 6-5 to 6-7 his whole HS career we might be talking about a 3-4 star player, but he came into HS at 6-1 and to me still looks like he's 11 years old in the face. Oddly enough the exact same thing happened to Benson. Freshman year he was hovering around 6-2 to 6-3 and then in one year grew like 6 inches....these things matter in rankings. A. Payne conversley started his freshman year around 6-8 or so. By the time he and Benson played each other in high school Benson was the same height and abused him inside. These kids are getting evaluated as earlier as the start of the 8th grade so you can imagine the amount of late blooming talent that gets completely overlooked. BG is finding the overlooked talent right now. Oliver's a wildcard, yes, but BG is bringing in another great class whether Oliver pans out or not...and that's the difference between UD now and just 3-4 years ago.

Don't feel bad. A lot of Xavier fans are confused.

#182 ·
disparaging Devin Oliver is pretty funny, he was 1st team All State in Michigan (lost in a state final) and played alongside Keith Appling and Alex Gauna for AAU Michigan Mustangs. In addtion to UD's offer he had offers from 4 other D1 schools and Michigan, Stanford and Southern Cal were all still interested...SC had scheduled a visit for this week.

The notion of Devin red shirting is IF Chris Wright stays at UD and because Devin is only 17 and still growing. UD's interest in Devin has been high since UD's elite camp last summer where he turned both coaches and onlookers heads with his play...just so happened UD's stable was filling up and offers were still out...Devin was asked by UD to wait while they further evaluated both him and their situation...

#192 ·
How many threads were there on UD Pride about Devin Oliver before this week? How many other teams were bummed out they didn't get him? I like to follow recruiting and I think it is fun. I like the ups and downs of following the prospects and talking on message boards with other fans who are going after this same recuit as Xavier to see what they think about someone. I like the publicity for one of Xavier's committs or targets when they are nationally ranked. If I was a UD fan I would trust that Brian Gregory made the right decision in offering this kid because it seems like Gregory has finally figured out exactly the types of players he wants and who he wants to fill those roles. From a fan perspective though this was just kind of bleh, not really noteworthy. I like recruiting battles though, if the school you root for is able to get a recruit relatively easily then I would be concerned about how talented he is. I feel really good about someone when other good basketball schools heavily pursue a player and he picks Xavier. Xavier got Jeff Robinson pretty easily because we were desperate for someone like him and Purdue was over their exceptions so it was either Xavier or JUCO. That has me worried about his ability to be a contributor at a school like Xavier. Oliver might be considered better than Griffin according to ESPN, but Griffin was pursued by Ohio State, Cincinnati, and Vanderbilt while also making recruiting visits to Northwestern and Wake Forest.

I have never heard such a ridiculous story about why a school would pull a kids offer. If Robinson had been kicking butt in highschool, do you think they would have told him to go away because they were "out of exceptions"? X fans will buy anything to make themselves feel good about this. How many times had you heard of "number of exceptions" on Xavier board threads before this incident?

#193 ·
To be fair Muskie, how many threads were there about Griffin before he verballed to X? I'm sure on your home boards you guys talked about him quite a bit but other then that, I'd never heard of the guy until he had his 2 week wonder performance this summer that catapulted him from a virtual no name to someone to be talked about it. I don't see much difference between the two players as far as that goes. Other then Ohio St, I don't see any difference in the schools that pursued Oliver. Michigan, USC and Wisconsin were all getting involved and it's hard to argue the eye for talent that Butler has had lately...much more so then UC or Vandy. Not trying to nit pick this, I'm just not seeing much difference bewtween the two as far as recruitment goes. X fans are pleased with Griffin and UD fans are obviously pleased with Oliver.

The high quality of players that Brian Gregory has been recruiting over the past few seasons is now paying a financial dividend. Below are excerpts from an excellent two-page article about the 2009-10 Dayton Flyers published yesterday by the Dayton Daily News:

Record Set for UD Season-ticket Sales (DDN – October 19, 2009)

While Gregory acknowledges his program appears to have turned a corner, he contends it won’t really become established until players police themselves without any prodding from the coaches. Based on what Chris Wright saw this offseason, though, that’s precisely what’s happening.

“We’re really close as a team, and I could see this summer everyone taking great ownership in the program,” the junior forward said. “You didn’t want to let your teammates down if you didn’t do that extra workout or put up more shots. Now that the summer is over, we’re on a mission.

“Nighttime activity has declined significantly. Even if we don’t have a morning workout, everyone understands they have to take care of themselves. Someone will call and say, ‘Chris, what are you doing?’ And I’ll say, ‘Laying down, watching TV.’ You can sense it’s more of a business approach this year.”

The television networks also have taken notice of the Flyers. The team will have six games broadcast nationally on either ESPN2 or ESPNU and two others on the fledgling CBS College Sports.

WHIO-TV also will carry 10 games this year, according to vice president and general manager Harry Delaney. The local TV schedule will be announced next week.

I'm actually with you on that one Stealth. If Robbie Hummel put Purdue over their number of exceptions I'm sure they could have made it work. I think what happened with Purdue is that they were over the scholarship limit with committed players. The Big 10 lets their teams oversign by one and I think Purdue liked their 2010 recruits and potential recruits better than Jeff so they found a reason not to admit him so they could continue to pursue other recruits. Obviously I don't know any of this for a fact but that is my best guess.

Are you willing to come back here and eat crow on this "paper tiger" thing you keeping puking out? I doubt it. I don't badmouth teams before the season starts for that same reason, you won't ever have to see me eating my own words on here. Guess the only one who believes the rumor is the all knowing, getting rich off basketball, A10fan2. A10fan2 knows more then the people who eat, live, and breath the game of college basketball. I guess EVERY publication is wrong on the paper tiger Flyers. EVERY single writer is staking their reputation on placing the Flyers in the Top 25. Stunning. But then again, this country did elect Obama so I guess it's entirely possible even the basketball writers have gone mad too.

Hey chief you know what a 'rumor' is right? I am glad AP didn't end up in Dayton or with Huggins. Congrats on Staten (again). Juwan is the cornerstone of a great class. Keep up the good work. Maybe someday I will post a link on what Brian Gregory's wife looks like, because you are my hero and inspiration.

I heard a rumor that Adrien Payne choosing Michigan State yesterday is just a smoke screen. He is really going to sign with Dayton.

Muddy, what odds do you give Dayton now? Wasn't it like 40% the day before he told the world he wanted to get the hell out of Dayton?
