Dayton Flyers 2009-10 Depth Chart with 2008-09 Scoring (5 Seniors):

PG: London Warren (6-0 Sr./ 4.1 PPG), Rob Lowery (6-2 Sr./ 7.5 PPG)
SG: Marcus Johnson (6-3 Sr./ 11.8 PPG), Mickey Perry (6-2 Sr./ 4.6 PPG), Paul Williams (6-4 Soph./ 2.2 PPG)
SF: Chris Wright (6-8 Jr./ 13.3 PPG), Chris Johnson (6-5 Soph./ 6.3 PPG), Luke Fabrizius (6-9 Soph./ 4.3 PPG)
PF: Devin Searcy (6-10 Jr./ 2.8 PPG), Josh Benson (6-10 Fr./ DNP)
C: Kurt Huelsman (6-10 Sr./ 3.6 PPG), Matt Kavanaugh (6-10 Fr./ DNP)

Brian Gregory has 6 scholarships available for the 2010 Class (the 5 present seniors plus Stephen Thomas’ scholarship) and the following wish list:

1 point guard
1 shooting guard
2 combo guards
1 combo forward
Adreian Payne

The point guard scholarship went to Juwan Staten.

At the present time, Brandon Spearman and Jalen Steele are the front-runners for the shooting guard scholarship.

Both combo guard scholarships have now been awarded, the first going to Drake transfer Josh Parker, who will be a junior in 2010-11 (Josh Parker video) and the second to Jesse Berry.

The combo forward scholarship went to Ralph Hill, who appears to be a slightly bigger version of multi-skilled, athletic Chris Johnson. Brian Gregory was in early on both Ralph Hill and Chris Johnson, and both flew under the national radar (i.e. head coaches of BCS-conference schools and the basketball recruiting websites) before committing to Dayton. As you recall, Chris Johnson was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie team in March 2009, which was quite an accomplishment for a reserve SF playing behind Chris Wright. At 6’-5” Chris Johnson is quite capable of playing the SG position against opponents’ taller SGs. Brian Gregory is very keen to stock his roster with players who can play 2 positions – “interchangeable parts” as he calls them – and is doing a great job of so.

The sixth and final scholarship available for 2010 is being held for PF/C Adreian Payne, who may or may not commit to Dayton. As many of you know already, Payne is still very raw, but has incredible upside potential. If Payne commits elsewhere, Brian Gregory may offer it to another 2010 prospect or hold the scholarship for a 2011 prospect.

It is relevant to ask how much UD’s recruiting has improved since Brian Gregory was named head coach of the Dayton Flyers.

This question is best answered by looking at the last two recruiting classes that were signed by Oliver Purnell before he left for Clemson:

University of Dayton Prospects: HS Class of 2002 (Scout.com)

University of Dayton Prospects: HS Class of 2003 (Scout.com)

If Chris Wright has a monster season in 2009-10 (i.e. 18 PPG, 8 RPG, 50% FGs, and 40% from 3-point range) he may well forego his senior year at UD and head to the NBA a year early as a first-round draft pick. However, given the very strong field of players who will likely be in the 2010 NBA Draft, coupled with Derrick Brown's disappointing # 40 selection in the 2009 NBA Draft, I consider it far more likely that Wright will play his senior year at UD.

If Wright does leave early for the NBA, the Flyers will still have junior Chris Johnson, junior Luke Fabrizius, and freshman Ralph Hill available to man the 3-spot in 2010-11. This means that Brian Gregory will not find himself in Chris Mack's situation of having to waste a valuable scholarship on a career pine-jockey in a desperate attempt to fill a hole in the roster after the unexpected departure of the team's best player.

Dayton has not passed Xavier as a program yet, but as each season goes by, Brian Gregory has been building a stronger roster and closing the gap between the Flyers and the Musketeers. I believe it is likely that the Flyers will win the Atlantic 10 Conference this season and continue to improve relative to Xavier and the rest of the Atlantic 10 basketball teams. However, that is only one man's humble opinion. As always, we'll see . . .

I mean, I thought Dayton didn't recruit these type of kids?

Glanced UD PRIDE to see the moaning that was certain to be present. Actually found a sensible post that all XAvier and Dayton fans should agree with:

"UD and Xavier generally recruit the same types of players and yes we at UD have recruited our fair share of those with checkered pasts. Both programs graduate their players and run clean programs. Although I hate how the coaching staff and administration at Xavier dealt with the brawl (and hope UD would handle it better), Xavier runs a clean program.

So yes I am envious they keep reloading and won the same amount of NCAA games this year as we have in 25+ years."

#2,315 ·
Wait!?!? WHAATT!? UD recruits have similar issues to X recruits? NOOOOOOOO.

At least both programs seem to help these kids graduate, I think, its good that both schools take them. If everyone turned their back on them then we would be doing them a disservice. And along the way they help our teams out a little. WIN WIN in my book.

#2,317 ·
In fairness to Muddy and all other Flyer fans who have trumpeted this "we recruit good kids" mantra...

We are under a new regime now. And this new regime is looking to model its program, basically, off of Xavier. Archie Miller appears to be taking more risks on kids with academic and other off court issues, which I am all for. This is how we will get better and there will be some hits and some misses.

That said, to throw years of "we recruit good kids" back in the face of Muddy and others isnt quite fair. Because, until this year, we HAVE recruited really good kids (better kids than Xavier). Gregory did not take academic risks and pulled scholarships from kids who got into trouble (Jesse Berry). So its hard to call UD fans hypocrites for saying that in the past. The circumstances have simply changed.

Since Muddy has such a habit of bringing up years-old posts/threads on Xavier discussions, I couldn't pass on the opportunity to bring up the very first post from this very thread. (Note he started this thread titled "Dayton Recruiting" yet spends so much of his first post talking about X).

If Chris Wright has a monster season in 2009-10 (i.e. 18 PPG, 8 RPG, 50% FGs, and 40% from 3-point range) he may well forego his senior year at UD and head to the NBA a year early as a first-round draft pick. I believe it is likely that the Flyers will win the Atlantic 10 Conference this season and continue to improve relative to Xavier and the rest of the Atlantic 10 basketball teams.

So how have the last 3 years been for you Muddy? Derrick Brown is playing in the NBA (along with David West, Jordan Crawford and soon to be Tu Holloway). Did Wright declare for the draft early and a first-round pick or is he still going back and forth between the D league?

Last paragraph I don't even have to point out how absolutely wrong you were, do I? In the 3 years since you wrote this Dayton has exactly 0 NCAA appearances and 0 conference championships. While X (even while wasting scholarships on career pine-jockeys in desperation) has 3 NCAA appearances, 2 Sweet 16's and 2 conference championships.

The huge gap between the two programs isn't closing but actually further widening.

The huge gap between the two programs isn't closing but actually further widening.

Wrong.

2010-11 Season:

Xavier 81, Dayton 76 (Yahoo! Box Score - January 15, 2011)

AP # 25 Xavier 66, Dayton 62 (Yahoo! Box Score - February 27, 2011)

Dayton 68, AP # 18 Xavier 67 (Yahoo! Box Score - March 11, 2011)

2011-12 Season:

Dayton 87, Xavier 72 (Yahoo! Box Score - January 21, 2012)

Xavier 86, Dayton 83, OT (Yahoo! Box Score - February 18, 2012)

Xavier 70, Dayton 69 (Yahoo! Box Score - March 9, 2012)

Summary:

2010-11 Season: UD lost by 5 points at UD Arena, lost by 4 points at Xavier, and won by 1 point at Atlantic City.

Total points: Xavier out-scored Dayton by 8 points during the 2010-11 season.

2011-12 Season: UD won by 15 points at UD Arena, lost by 3 points in OT at Xavier, and lost by 1 point at Atlantic City.

Total points: Dayton out-scored Xavier by 11 points during the 2011-12 season.

If Dayton had made one more basket on March 9, 2012, it would have sent Xavier to the NIT.

If Dayton had made one more basket on March 9, 2012 and made one more basket in regulation on February 18, 2012, Dayton would have swept Xavier 3-0 this season.

It was that close.

So the gap between the two programs is closing - not widening.

Cobra-
The fact that X has graduated 80+ Seniors would invalidate your whole point. "Better kids"? According to who? UD fans? You have to be joking. X has had a few stumbles along the way as had UD. "Bad kid" cuz he went to too many high schools? Is that the criteria now?
X has molded many "academically challenged" kids into functioning adults in society. Taught them to study, got them into the routine of academic life and showed them the value of obtaining their degree.
Any coach would have dropped Berry for beating up his gf, except maybe Mick Cronin and Thuggins.

#2,321 ·
My comments weren't meant as an attack on X as much as comment on the change at UD. I'm sure X has done wonderful things for many academically challenged kids. What I am saying is, taking kids with academic issues, who spent time at 4 different high schools, and have blown up at their HS coach is new territory for UD fans. (as said, I have no problem with it) On the other hand, X has taken such players in the past 5-10 years. This is basically undeniable (and I dont mean it as a criticism). UD players might have gotten into trouble once they got here (Norm Plummer), but (before recently) they were less likely to have problems before they arrived on campus than X players were.

Its all water under the bridge, though, because it looks like UD now has a more risk-taking recruiting strategy. I love it. And both sides will have plenty of things to criticize about the next few years' recruits.

#2,322 ·
True, but all recruits have risks. McKenzie, I believe, has 4.0 GPA. Great kid. Should his bb scholly be renewed bcuz he's a great kid and a great student?

Reality is, BB coaches nowadays are paid 7 figures to produce on the floor, get in the Dance, get the alumni excited and bring in more bucks. Then, do it all again the next year.

I'm sorry, but I have to interject myself into this X - UD pissing match, because what Muddy posted as his "proof" that UD is closing the gap has to be the downright dumbest post on this board in years. It also made me laugh out loud. Let me get this straight Muddy. Because you're losing by less points to X, even though you're still losing 2 out of 3 games, the gap is closing? Do they alter the won - loss record based on point spread or does it still count as a loss according to the NCAA (or any other sports body for that much)? A loss is a loss is a loss no matter if you lose by 1 or by 100. I wouldn't care if the Explorers won every single game by one point, because guess what? THEY STILL WON!!!

Putting that stupid point of yours to the side, tell me how UD is closing the gap when X has been to the Sweet 16 how many times in the past 5 years while UD has done what in that same time period?

It's been obvious to any casual poster on this board that you have a deep seated hate \ envy of X, but that last post of yours was so flat out stupid and illogical that it boggles the mind.

4. X has been to 4 Sweet 16's (along with 1 Elite 8) in the past 5 years, along with an NCAA appearance each of those years. Dayton has had 1 NCAA appearance in the past 5 years back in 2009 (and actually won a game that year for the first time since 1989-90).

Thus far the only thing anyone has heard so far is that tweet.....nothing else.

Until I just saw this from another UD poster on Pride...you would think this guy might know since he just watched him play Thursday....not one mention of him not qualifying.

http://www.nbebasketball.com/w3/2012-0407/nj-playaz-spring-fling-report-part-ii/

"Jevon Thomas (Team Melo 2012) – signed with Dayton – Thomas’ athleticism at the point is jarring if you haven’t seen him play before. The sub 6 footer flies up and down the court with the ball in his hands and exploded around the rim for multiple dunks on the day. His jumper was not falling but he made the adjustment and attacked the rim every time. Thomas needs to become better at running a team and operating in the half court but he’s an exciting athlete in the back court for the Flyers."

I'm not saying he is going to qualify, but usually when something like that is announced, everyone that is somebody picks it up on Twitter. Not just ONE guy named Steve Keller, whoever that is.

#2,335 · (Edited)
It should shock no one that Thomas isn't coming. He has always had academic issues and transferred to a diploma mill run by a convicted felon.

Sounds about right, Archie has to roll the dice on these type of guys if he wants to elevate the program to the next level. Sometimes it works out and other times it doesnt. Time will tell if his committment will stand, might be tough with him being from NYC although I think UD has an asst with strong ties up that way.

The following is from Adam Zagoria's blog earlier today. Might fill Archie's needs for next season. Note, X is mention with respect to the wing player.

Bradley Hayes, a 6-foot-11 center from Jacksonville (Fla.) Sandalwood with a very high ceiling, has yet to pick a school.

“The kid can run like a deer, has soft hands and has finally embraced his size and gifts,” Todd Washington, a Hayes family friend and founder of the Puerto Rico Playmakers, told SNY.tv. “He didn’t always take basketball seriously but he is focused and prepared.”

Antwan Tennell, Hayes’ AAU coach with the Dwight Howard Warriors, said Memphis, Arkansas, Georgia, Mississippi State and Georgetown are involved to various degrees. Memphis has offered and Arkansas comes for a home visit Saturday.

“He has a chance to be a pro,” Tennell told SNY.tv. “He actually grew seven inches in like five months a year and a half ago. He has finally caught up to his size. He moves like a guard. He runs the floor rim-to-rim.

“[In one game], he contested a shot from the 3-pointer and got back in there and got the rebound. He can hit the 15- to 18-foot jumper.”

Tennell said Hayes might prep a year at IMG Academies, but that he would play on the AAU circuit this month with the Dwight Howard 17-under team and then go from there.

“He’s wide open,” Tennell said. “He’s a diamond in the rough.”

Tennell also coached Arlington Country Day guards Ian Baker and Carlos Morris and says both remain open after they decommitted from South Carolina.

Baker’s high school coach, Rex Morgan, previously said the player had committed to Providence, but Tennell said it’s not a done deal yet and that Baker was reevaluating his options after Providence point guard Vincent Council opted to stay in school and not enter the NBA Draft. Providence also has McDonald’s All-American point guard Kris Dunn coming in.

“It’s not official yet,” Tennell said of the Baker commitment. “We’re still leaning that way.”

Tennell said Baker visited Seton Hall, which needs a guard, this past weekend.

“Yes, he did,” Tennell said.

He added that Carlos Morris, also of Arlington Country day, is “wide open” and is hearing from Texas A&M, South Carolina, UConn, Seton Hall, St. John’s and Xavier and was waiting to take the SAT later this month.

“He might be one of the best available wings right now,” Tennell said.

I'm not taking the bait! I'll wait until the entire starting 5 are transfers/de-commits....then standby!!

I looked at this guy's OSU stats and they don't seem all that impressive. But I know you've got to shore up the guard position and maybe he helps next year when Dillard graduates.

How does his sitting out a year for transferring count in scholarships? Is he using one up the first year there?

Miller still has 2 (or 3) to use I think and I would assume still looking for more guards.

#2,347 ·
Worst kept secret I have ever heard. Still not official until he shows up to class, but it's been something that's been in motion for a while. He almost left after the fall quarter, but was convinced to stay for the rest of the season. Has a good relationship with Archie, who helped recruit him to OSU, and with Kevin Kuwik.
