Dayton Flyers 2009-10 Depth Chart with 2008-09 Scoring (5 Seniors):

PG: London Warren (6-0 Sr./ 4.1 PPG), Rob Lowery (6-2 Sr./ 7.5 PPG)
SG: Marcus Johnson (6-3 Sr./ 11.8 PPG), Mickey Perry (6-2 Sr./ 4.6 PPG), Paul Williams (6-4 Soph./ 2.2 PPG)
SF: Chris Wright (6-8 Jr./ 13.3 PPG), Chris Johnson (6-5 Soph./ 6.3 PPG), Luke Fabrizius (6-9 Soph./ 4.3 PPG)
PF: Devin Searcy (6-10 Jr./ 2.8 PPG), Josh Benson (6-10 Fr./ DNP)
C: Kurt Huelsman (6-10 Sr./ 3.6 PPG), Matt Kavanaugh (6-10 Fr./ DNP)

Brian Gregory has 6 scholarships available for the 2010 Class (the 5 present seniors plus Stephen Thomas’ scholarship) and the following wish list:

1 point guard
1 shooting guard
2 combo guards
1 combo forward
Adreian Payne

The point guard scholarship went to Juwan Staten.

At the present time, Brandon Spearman and Jalen Steele are the front-runners for the shooting guard scholarship.

Both combo guard scholarships have now been awarded, the first going to Drake transfer Josh Parker, who will be a junior in 2010-11 (Josh Parker video) and the second to Jesse Berry.

The combo forward scholarship went to Ralph Hill, who appears to be a slightly bigger version of multi-skilled, athletic Chris Johnson. Brian Gregory was in early on both Ralph Hill and Chris Johnson, and both flew under the national radar (i.e. head coaches of BCS-conference schools and the basketball recruiting websites) before committing to Dayton. As you recall, Chris Johnson was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie team in March 2009, which was quite an accomplishment for a reserve SF playing behind Chris Wright. At 6’-5” Chris Johnson is quite capable of playing the SG position against opponents’ taller SGs. Brian Gregory is very keen to stock his roster with players who can play 2 positions – “interchangeable parts” as he calls them – and is doing a great job of so.

The sixth and final scholarship available for 2010 is being held for PF/C Adreian Payne, who may or may not commit to Dayton. As many of you know already, Payne is still very raw, but has incredible upside potential. If Payne commits elsewhere, Brian Gregory may offer it to another 2010 prospect or hold the scholarship for a 2011 prospect.

It is relevant to ask how much UD’s recruiting has improved since Brian Gregory was named head coach of the Dayton Flyers.

This question is best answered by looking at the last two recruiting classes that were signed by Oliver Purnell before he left for Clemson:

University of Dayton Prospects: HS Class of 2002 (Scout.com)

University of Dayton Prospects: HS Class of 2003 (Scout.com)

If Chris Wright has a monster season in 2009-10 (i.e. 18 PPG, 8 RPG, 50% FGs, and 40% from 3-point range) he may well forego his senior year at UD and head to the NBA a year early as a first-round draft pick. However, given the very strong field of players who will likely be in the 2010 NBA Draft, coupled with Derrick Brown's disappointing # 40 selection in the 2009 NBA Draft, I consider it far more likely that Wright will play his senior year at UD.

If Wright does leave early for the NBA, the Flyers will still have junior Chris Johnson, junior Luke Fabrizius, and freshman Ralph Hill available to man the 3-spot in 2010-11. This means that Brian Gregory will not find himself in Chris Mack's situation of having to waste a valuable scholarship on a career pine-jockey in a desperate attempt to fill a hole in the roster after the unexpected departure of the team's best player.

Dayton has not passed Xavier as a program yet, but as each season goes by, Brian Gregory has been building a stronger roster and closing the gap between the Flyers and the Musketeers. I believe it is likely that the Flyers will win the Atlantic 10 Conference this season and continue to improve relative to Xavier and the rest of the Atlantic 10 basketball teams. However, that is only one man's humble opinion. As always, we'll see . . .

I'll be a little disappointed with a 10 seed. Chances are that means a combination in some form of a less than 2-1 record in PR, a few other losses in OOC play, a third or fourth place finish in league play, and a quick exit in AC.

Mix a few of those together and UD is looking at a 9/10 type seed. This team is too talented for that to happen, barring a rash of injuries (knock on wood). A couple wins in the dance could turn my feelings around, but that wouldn't mean the disappointing feeling wouldn't have existed.

Staten Excels in Class, on Court at Oak Hill (Doug Harris, DDN - November 7, 2009)

He was just named Oak Hill’s student of the week, an award that takes into account academic performance, attitude and work ethic. And he’s drawing raves from basketball coach Steve Smith, whose program has produced numerous NBA players, including point guards Rod Strickland, Rajon Rondo, Ty Lawson and Brandon Jennings.

Staten, who is rated as the 44th-best prospect nationally by Rivals.com, had 15 points and eight assists in the team’s season opener, a 100-55 win over Central Carolina Academy.

“I don’t like to compare guards, but he’s as quick as any guard I’ve had except Ty Lawson (the 18th overall pick in the 2009 NBA draft),” Smith said. “He really pushes the ball. Brandon Jennings (chosen No. 10 overall) was quick. But Ty and Juwan are the quickest point guards I’ve had.

“(Staten) puts lots of pressure on the defense. It makes it tough for them to set up.”

Dave Telep, the national recruiting director for Scout.com, believes Staten’s speed from baseline to baseline is what sets him apart.

“He has an extra gear,” Telep said. “He’s becoming a multi-threat, get-to-the-basket, play-behind-the-(3-point)-line kind of guy. And when you have that extra gear of speed like he has, it will become noticeable very quickly in the Atlantic 10.

“When you have that (speed) attribute, and you start mixing it around good players, it becomes a very, very dangerous scenario for opponents.”

Edit: I don't know how good Oak Hill Academy will be this year, but they're off to a good start:

Wednesday, November 11th is the first day that HS Class of 2010 recruits can submit their National Letter of Intent to the school of their choice.

Dayton Flyers' 2010 Recruiting Class:

Juwan Staten averaged 21.0 PPG in 2008-09.

Ralph Hill: "The athletic wing averaged 19 points and nine rebounds as a junior."

Jesse Berry: "The 6-foot-1 senior-to-be averaged 27.5 points as a junior last season — second in Indiana high school ranks".

Brandon Spearman: "Spearman averaged 15 points and seven rebounds as a junior last season."

Devin Oliver led the Maroon Giants in several categories this season, including points (18.0 per game), rebounds (8.1/game) and steals (more than four per game). Oliver also tallied 6.5 assists and 1.5 blocks per contest

Transfer Josh Parker (who will sit out the 2009-10 season) averaged 10.7 PPG at Drake his sophomore year, shooting 45.2 % from the field, 43.2 % on 3-pointers and 72.0 % from the free-throw line.

Area College Basketball Recruits (DDN Staff Reports)

These high school basketball players are expected to sign national letters of intent Wednesday, the first day of the fall signing period.

Who will be signing on to play for UD:

DAYTON

Jesse Berry

High school: Lafayette (Ind.) Jefferson

Height: 6-foot-1

Weight: 180 pounds

FYI: Berry averaged 27.3 points as a junior last season and was second in the state in scoring behind Ohio State recruit DeShaun Thomas. ... Playing in perhaps Indiana’s toughest prep conference, Berry set a school record with a 55-point outburst. ... Turned down scholarship offers from Cincinnati, Butler and Ball State. ... Deceptively strong for his size. Has lifted a combined 900-plus pounds in the bench press, squat and clean and jerk.

Ralph Hill

High school: Westerville (Ohio) North

Height: 6-foot-6

Weight: 195 pounds

FYI: Averaged 19 points and nine rebounds last season. ... Picked the Flyers over Akron and also was being recruited by Butler, Georgia Tech and Notre Dame. ... Led his team to the district championships last year. ... Said one of the things that attracted him to Dayton was the chance to play in front of 13,000 fans.

Brandon Spearman

High school: Chicago Simeon

Height: 6-foot-3

Weight: 185 pounds

FYI: Spearman made the Rivals.com top 150 recruits in the nation at No. 116. ... Averaged 15 points and seven rebounds as a junior and is known for his defensive prowess. ... Had offers from Bradley, Illinois State, Nevada and Baylor, and visited Marquette before committing to the Flyers. ... Diehard Chicago Bears fan.

Devin Oliver

High school: Kalamazoo (Mich.) Central

Height: 6-foot-7

Weight: 175 pounds

FYI: Oliver was a first-team all-state pick and led Kalamazoo Central to the Class A (big school) state finals before losing to Detroit Pershing last season. ... Averaged 18 points and 8.1 rebounds and had offers from Butler, Iowa and Western Michigan. ... The long-armed lefty has been likened to the Detroit Pistons’ Tayshaun Prince. ... His parents, Amy and Kelvin Oliver, met while both were playing basketball at Western Michigan in the early 1980s.

But the Dayton Daily News Staff forgot to list JUWAN STATEN from DAYTON in their article.

That's pretty bad when the local newspaper makes a balls of copying a MB post and leaves off UD's highest-rated recruit.

To be honest, and this isn't a homer opinion, but based on what OTHERS who have no affiliation with UD are saying about Staten I find it hard to believe that he isn't a Top 5 PG right now. I guess I should go read what there saying about the other 9-10 that are ranked ahead of him. They must all be related to D. Rose or this is just one seriously heavy PG class.

PF/C: Devin Searcy (6-10 Sr.) and Josh Benson (6-9 Soph.)

* Junior Josh Parker (who will sit out the 2009-10 season) averaged 10.7 PPG during his 2007-08 sophomore year at Drake, shooting 45.2 % from the field, 43.2 % on 3-pointers and 72.0 % from the free-throw line.

** If Chris Wright foregoes his senior year at Dayton in favor of the 2010 NBA Draft, Brian Gregory will have another scholarship available to award for the 2010-11 season. Given that five new freshmen will be joining the Flyers for the 2010-11 season, look for Brian Gregory to recruit a JUCO PF/C if Chris Wright does not return to UD next year.

*** Assuming that Luke Fabrizius adds weight and muscle during the next 12 months, he should be able to play both the SF and PF positions in 2010-11.

In the 2010-11 season, Brian Gregory will have even more flexibility with his line-ups than he has this season. Note that 6'-6" Chris Johnson is quick enough to play the SG position against opponents' tall SGs, which will give Brian Gregory even more options in his line-ups.

^^^ My edits above are how I see the roster coming together next year.

BG gave several interviews today talking about the new recruits. Again and again he talked about versatility. He seems to be targeting guys who can play multiple positions. He talked about Brandon Spearman playing all three wing positions (point guard? really?) and about Devin Oliver playing all five positions for his high school team.

The 10-11 team is going to look like a different kind of Flyer team, I think. For the past three years we have played with a center and point guard (LW, not Brob of course) who couldn't really do anything offensively. And PFs that could only really dunk and miss free throws. Now, these recruits will have to pan out, but I see a lot more offensive balance in store for the Flyers. We will still have probably have limitations at center, but our PGs are going to score (no doubts about Wan and Parker) and our PFs are going to be dual inside-outside threats. I *think* we will have four or five good-to-very good outside shooters, and our bigs look to have better free throw shooting touches than Huelsman/Little. It all adds up to a team that is harder to defend and more efficient offensively. Of course, next year we will have a lot of freshmen, so that means turnovers, turnovers, turnovers...

What I don't see on the '10-11 roster is much pure strength inside and that may weaken the defense. There will be times that we will miss Huelsman, Little, and Wright (assuming he's gone) when we go up against athletic and strong bigmen on BCS teams. Kavanaugh will have to come through for us there, but he can't play 40 minutes in those games. I think Luke Fabrizius will continue to put on weight, but I'm not sure he will ever have a banger's mentality. Benson and Searcy are built like gazelles, and Oliver/Hill will not have strength as freshmen.

But overall, I'm excited about the future. WH is right...the A10 is a guards league. And I think the Flyers just signed a bunch of good ones.

DAYTON SIGNS TOP RECRUITING CLASS OF STATEN, HILL, BERRY, SPEARMAN, & OLIVER (DaytonFlyers.com)

Here's one for Cincy Muskie, A10 fan2, and tman:

Staten Sticks to his Word, Signs with UD (Tom Archdeadon, DDN - Nov, 12, 2009)

He had just one thing he wanted to tell the folks back in Dayton:

“I’m a man of my word.

I said I was gonna be a Dayton Flyer, and now it’s official. I’m really coming.”

At 8:45 Wednesday morning, Nov. 11, Juwan Staten sat down at Oak Hill Academy — the Virginia-based hoops power with whom he’s finishing out his prep career — and signed a national letter of intent to come back home and play for the University of Dayton.

In so doing, Staten — one of the most heralded recruits ever landed by the Flyers — deflated an often over-amped, two-year debate about the validity of his verbal commitment to UD.

“For two years straight, there’s been all kinds of gossip, drama, blog rumors and innuendo going around,” Flyers coach Brian Gregory said. “In my 20 years of coaching, I’ve never seen a kid have to recommit himself more than Juwan.

“I couldn’t say anything during the process, but it ticked me off. I wanted to say, ‘Leave my guy alone. How many times does he have to say he’s coming?’ To his credit, he kept a level head and just focused on his own game.”

What Does UD's Gregory Have to Say about his 5 Newest Recruits ? (Doug Harris, DDN - Nov, 12, 2009)

Good stuff. At the bottom of the article, here is what Dave Telep had to say about Brandon Spearman:

Dave Telep, the national recruiting director for Scouthoops.com, believes Spearman’s commitment was a coup for the Flyers.

“I just like Brandon Spearman as this ultimate team guy,” Telep said. “He’s a great competitor with a motor and really likes to win. He does a lot of things. He’s a stat-stuffing guy.”

Lawrence North 63, Chicago Simeon 61 (Indianapolis Star - December 20, 2008)

Simeon's Brandon Spearman led all scorers with 23 points, and teammate Jeremy Jones followed with 21.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Simeon - SG Brandon Spearman 23, Jones 21, Orange 7, Walker 4, Minster 2, Pinkney 2, Robinson 2, Greer 0, McElerth 0.

3-pointers: SG Brandon Spearman 3, Jones 2, Orange 2. Totals: 20 14-22 61.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lawrence North - Ferguson 17, Van Treese 17, Taylor 13, Smith 6, SG Justin Martin 6, Bass 4, Ashley 0, Davis 0, PF Splinters Robinson 0.

3-pointers: SG Justin Martin 1, Smith 1. Totals: 21 19-29 63.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Justin Martin may have got a boost in the rankings with his early commitment to Louisville. In any event, it's hard to argue with the results of head-to-head competition.

The difference is that next year's will very likely be even better! Not much word is coming out of the UD camp on 2011 recruits. What's in the pipeline?

3 out of the last 4 years X has had nationally ranked recruiting classes. I think that bodes very well for the future of the program no matter who the coach is.

#223 ·
I'm not a UD recruiting expert but I do consider myself an expert on talent and strategy...on that front you can be sure good players are going to follow Juwan Staten to UD. His Oak Hill coach recently placed Juwan's name alongside some of the best young PG's in the game. Players at every other position are going to want to play with him...case in point is UD's 2010 class. Juwan won't make any friends out at Oak Hill either...

#224 ·
I thought good players were going to follow CW? oops, don't want to open that can of worms. Why wouldn't they want to follow Doron Lamb or Roscoe or.... Really, the same can be said for any player. It's not like Juwan is a Top25, 5 star that's not a local kid. He's a great pickup for UD but I'll reserve judgement until the '11 and '12 classes are signed and right now the only name I hear is Sampson and that's for his ties more to MJ than anything.

#229 ·
I thought good players were going to follow CW? oops, don't want to open that can of worms.
Why would you be hesitant to open that can? The recruits we have had behind CW's class have been amazing. You can trace that back to CW giving our program a big shot in the arm on a national level. After all, the national media seems to be impressed with what we have on the roster. Its' not like we are carrying a bunch of deadwood on our team (Andrew Taylor, Jeff Robinson, Brian Walsh).

We only have 2 scholarships to give in 2011-2012. One of those could very well be held for a JUCO transfer in 2010-2011 if CW goes NBA next year.

#230 ·
I think Staten will have a smaller impact on recruiting than BG finally being able to point out a Flyer in the NBA. BG was a great recruiter when all he had to sell a recruit on was the Arena and his coaching staff. Now that the team is getting national attention and has a good chance at making some noise in the tournament again, coupled with an NBA player (assuming Wright makes it in the next two years), BG would no longer have to do more with less and would have some real selling points.

#243 ·
#246 ·
Maybe no Chris Wright or Chris Johnson, but maybe a Negele Knight or Brian Roberts. And don't forget that Josh Parker begins his 2 years of eligibility next year with this group. I'm already a believer in that guy after watching him play in the scrimmage. That's 4 high quality guards coming in together.

From Juwan .... 22, 12, and a slam:

Juwan Staten’s Diary #5 – Staying Strong (by Juwan Staten, Oak Hill Academy - Nov. 12, 2009)

"I had 22 points and 12 assists. In addition to Baye’s four dunks, Roscoe, Doron and I all had one."

Oak Hill Academy 2009-10 Schedule & Results (7-0)

Boys’ Hoops Super 25 – Preseason Poll (USA Today - Nov. 17, 2009)

3. Oak Hill Academy, Mouth of Wilson, Va. (40-1)*

Returning starters:
Three. Outlook: Warriors have been known for great guards in recent seasons, and this is not an exception. Doron Lamb returns with a physical all-around game along with Pe'Shon Howard, another returnee. One new guard who will see plenty of playing time is ultra-quick Juwan Staten from Dayton, Ohio. Underneath, Walbrook (Baltimore) transfer F Roscoe Smith at 6-8 gives some size to go with 6-10 C Baye Moussa Keita, a Syracuse signee.

4. Northland, Columbus, Ohio (27-1)

Returning starters:
Three. Outlook: Vikings return most of a team that won a state Division I title and are led underneath by two Ohio State signees, 6-8 F Jared Sullinger and 6-5 J.D. Weatherspoon. Junior G Trey Burke, who has given a commitment to Penn State, also returns.

#249 ·
11. Bloomington South, Bloomington, Ind. (26-0)

Returning starters: Three. Outlook: Defending 5A state champ lost Jordan Hulls, Indiana's Mr. Basketball, to Indiana University. Still has plenty in reserve as it showed with 21-2 AAU mark over the summer. 6-8 F Erik Fromm, a Butler signee, returns, as does junior G Dee Davis, who was MVP of the state title game, and F Spencer Turner. G Matt Carlino, a transfer from Hamilton (Gilbert, Ariz.), also probably will start.
