Re: Dayton Recruiting

Five Questions: Dayton Assistant Coach Jon Borovich (College ChalkTalk - August 10, 2009)

Jon talks about Josh Benson, Matt Kavanaugh, Rob Lowery's recovery, and the seven returning Flyers seniors.

Orlando INKlings (Kentucky INK - UK Wildcats Weblog - July 26, 2009) Excerpt:

- Wouldn't be surprised to see UK find a way to get in the living room of Juwan Staten, point guard for All-Ohio, who is a Dayton commit.

Cal [UK Head Coach John Calipari] really liked him last week at Peach Jam and with good reason.

Staten can play either style and is a perfect fit for Cal because he can flat out shoot.

Re: Dayton Recruiting

I am told by folks that perhaps no other coach or staff in the country work as hard as the group from UD when it comes to recruiting.

Forget Payne--it didn't happen --its not going to happen---and everyone that knows him--- or his group of friends------ know that UD is no longer an option .

That doesn't change the fact that UD under BG has gotten into more homes of greater talent than any other coach in UD basketball history---so whats next?--you have sign some of those guys. Gregory does.

Chris Wright is from my home town--and I have friends that once were members of the UD coaching staff---EVERYONE that I speak to, tell me the same story-----If a kid that Dayton is recruiting walks across the street----gregory (or staff) is there to watch.

Gregory makes contact very early, as he has a keen eye for the type of player he likes. Once he picks a target---he or staff make their presence known. EVERYWHERE!

They are relentless!

I can't tell you how many High School coaches have told me how impressive the effort is from the UD staff. Many say they've never seen anything like it.

The staff does this in a coy type of way. They don't seek out the player---or make a scene---they do give the impression to the kid that he is SO important that everything he does is note worthy. So without harrassing or stalking a kid--they make him and his friends know how special he is.

Many times before other schools get involved, UD is way ahead of other programs, They find that UD knows the kid---has a working relationship with the kid---and kids are crazy about the UD coach and staff.

They simply out work every other program.

They do a great job of letting a kid know that they appreciate him and his talent---They are also very open and honest with kids they're after..

Gregory told Chris Wright while the kid was in high school--You may think you're a great player now, but you need alot of work.

Forget Payne---it doesn't change the fact that when Dayton takes the floor against a squad from a major program or conference--they are not at a dissadvantage athletically, they are just as fast or faster, can out jump most programs in the nation and size is not an issue.

Thats called recruiting. And this coach is one of the best at doing it.

Woody Hayes once said
Quote
“I've had smarter people around me all my life, but I haven't run into one yet that can outwork me. And if they can't outwork you, then smarts aren't going to do them much good. That's just the way it is".
End Quote

I don't know if Brian Gregory's ever ran into anyone that can out work him.

Flyers Keeping Tabs on Two Highly-touted Wayne Stars (Doug Harris, DDN - August 21, 2009)

They’re believed to be the only local prospects in the 2011 class to receive scholarship offers from the University of Dayton, and they’re getting plenty of attention from some high-profile schools around the nation.

Markus Crider has visited UD, Cincinnati, Notre Dame and Xavier, while Travis Trice II has checked out those four plus Ohio State and Butler. And they’ll be taking tours together of Notre Dame again and Michigan in the coming weeks.

Juniors Markus Crider and Travis Trice II of Wayne High School are on several midwestern schools’ radar for 2011

Re: Dayton Recruiting

Like I said in the other thread, it's great for pub. now but half the Top150 hasn't committed anywhere yet and I bet when it's done those rankings won't look nearly the same except for tOSU at 1.

Juwan Staten averaged 21.0 PPG in 2008-09.

Ralph Hill: "The athletic wing averaged 19 points and nine rebounds as a junior."

Jesse Berry: "The 6-foot-1 senior-to-be averaged 27.5 points as a junior last season — second in Indiana high school ranks".

Brandon Spearman: "Spearman averaged 15 points and seven rebounds as a junior last season."

Lawrence North 63, Chicago Simeon 61 (Indianapolis Star - December 20, 2008)

Brandon Spearman (23 points including 3 treys) dominated Justin Martin (6 points including 1 trey) at both ends of the court in their only head-to-head match-up. That says a whole lot.

Similarly to Chris Johnson (who was named to the All-Atlantic 10 Rookie Team), Ralph Hill is seriously under-rated. Ralph Hill dominated Ohio State commitment J.D. Weatherspoon in their most recent head-to-head matchup:

The best game of the year for Ralph Hill was against Ohio big boys prep state champ, Rival 5star & Ohio's most lusted player & tOSU recruit Jared Sullinger where Hill scored 25 in a 3 pt loss.

Another good sign on the recruiting trail is BG offered him early and Hill has accepted turning down attempts by ND & Georgia Tech wishes for Hill to postpone his decision until later this summer (post AAU season).

Juwan Staten and Jesse Berry have dominated just about everyone they have played against.

Atlantic 10 Commitments: HS Class of 2010 (ESPN / Scouts Inc. - August 19, 2009)

Atlantic 10: Top 10 Class of 2010 Commitments (so far)

95 - Justin Martin (Xavier)

94 - Juwan Staten (Dayton)

91 - Brandon Spearman (Dayton)
91 - Jesse Berry (Dayton)

91 - Ge'Lawn Guyn (Charlotte)
91 - Langston Galloway (St. Joseph's)

90 - Jordan Latham (Xavier)

88 - Jay Canty (Xavier)

86 - Ralph Hill (Dayton)
86 - Daryus Quarles (St. Joseph's)

Re: Dayton Recruiting

Sounds like some of those guys (Hill particularly) play for pretty crappy teams. I'm not going to get too excited by some guy who probably takes at least 60% of his teams shots, scoring 25+. I'm not saying that it is bad, or that Hill isn't going to pan out, but let's at least be realistic here.

Indeed.

Brian Gregory has taken recruiting to a new level at Dayton.

When Oliver Purnell was Dayton's coach, you didn't see high school players he turned away get scholarship offers from SEC schools.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fulton Guard Steele Gets Offer from Auburn During Official Visit (Sept. 6, 2009)

Fulton High School senior Jalen Steele picked up his first major Division I basketball offer Sunday during his official visit to Auburn University.

The 6-foot-2 guard/wing has plenty of options from which to choose.

He was on the verge of committing to Dayton earlier this summer. But the Flyers received a commitment from another recruit.

Steele re-opened his recruitment and, consequently, is now in prime position of being a future SEC player.

If he's only eyeing the SEC, one competitor Auburn might face for Steele's services is rival Alabama. The Tide's first-year coach Anthony Grant recruited Steele while he was coach at VCU, and Grant is back in the mix for Steele again.

Steele has helped Fulton win back-to-back Class AA state title. A highly efficient scorer with a penchant for defense, Steele averaged 21.3 points per game last season.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As you recall, Brian Gregory withdrew his offer to Jalen Steele after Jesse Berry (27.5 PPG) committed to Dayton at the beginning of July.

That sure beats stealing players from High Point and Wabash College to fill a roster.

They must be awesome workers. It only took them 5 years to build an NCAA team back into an NCAA team.
