Dayton Flyers 2009-10 Depth Chart with 2008-09 Scoring (5 Seniors):

PG: London Warren (6-0 Sr./ 4.1 PPG), Rob Lowery (6-2 Sr./ 7.5 PPG)
SG: Marcus Johnson (6-3 Sr./ 11.8 PPG), Mickey Perry (6-2 Sr./ 4.6 PPG), Paul Williams (6-4 Soph./ 2.2 PPG)
SF: Chris Wright (6-8 Jr./ 13.3 PPG), Chris Johnson (6-5 Soph./ 6.3 PPG), Luke Fabrizius (6-9 Soph./ 4.3 PPG)
PF: Devin Searcy (6-10 Jr./ 2.8 PPG), Josh Benson (6-10 Fr./ DNP)
C: Kurt Huelsman (6-10 Sr./ 3.6 PPG), Matt Kavanaugh (6-10 Fr./ DNP)

Brian Gregory has 6 scholarships available for the 2010 Class (the 5 present seniors plus Stephen Thomas’ scholarship) and the following wish list:

1 point guard
1 shooting guard
2 combo guards
1 combo forward
Adreian Payne

The point guard scholarship went to Juwan Staten.

At the present time, Brandon Spearman and Jalen Steele are the front-runners for the shooting guard scholarship.

Both combo guard scholarships have now been awarded, the first going to Drake transfer Josh Parker, who will be a junior in 2010-11 (Josh Parker video) and the second to Jesse Berry.

The combo forward scholarship went to Ralph Hill, who appears to be a slightly bigger version of multi-skilled, athletic Chris Johnson. Brian Gregory was in early on both Ralph Hill and Chris Johnson, and both flew under the national radar (i.e. head coaches of BCS-conference schools and the basketball recruiting websites) before committing to Dayton. As you recall, Chris Johnson was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie team in March 2009, which was quite an accomplishment for a reserve SF playing behind Chris Wright. At 6’-5” Chris Johnson is quite capable of playing the SG position against opponents’ taller SGs. Brian Gregory is very keen to stock his roster with players who can play 2 positions – “interchangeable parts” as he calls them – and is doing a great job of so.

The sixth and final scholarship available for 2010 is being held for PF/C Adreian Payne, who may or may not commit to Dayton. As many of you know already, Payne is still very raw, but has incredible upside potential. If Payne commits elsewhere, Brian Gregory may offer it to another 2010 prospect or hold the scholarship for a 2011 prospect.

PF # 2 Adreian Payne (Rivals.com)

PF # 7 Adreian Payne (ESPN / Scouts Inc.)

C # 4 Adreian Payne (Scout.com)

It is relevant to ask how much UD’s recruiting has improved since Brian Gregory was named head coach of the Dayton Flyers.

This question is best answered by looking at the last two recruiting classes that were signed by Oliver Purnell before he left for Clemson:

University of Dayton Prospects: HS Class of 2002 (Scout.com)

University of Dayton Prospects: HS Class of 2003 (Scout.com)

If Chris Wright has a monster season in 2009-10 (i.e. 18 PPG, 8 RPG, 50% FGs, and 40% from 3-point range) he may well forego his senior year at UD and head to the NBA a year early as a first-round draft pick. However, given the very strong field of players who will likely be in the 2010 NBA Draft, coupled with Derrick Brown's disappointing # 40 selection in the 2009 NBA Draft, I consider it far more likely that Wright will play his senior year at UD.

If Wright does leave early for the NBA, the Flyers will still have junior Chris Johnson, junior Luke Fabrizius, and freshman Ralph Hill available to man the 3-spot in 2010-11. This means that Brian Gregory will not find himself in Chris Mack's situation of having to waste a valuable scholarship on a career pine-jockey in a desperate attempt to fill a hole in the roster after the unexpected departure of the team's best player.

Dayton has not passed Xavier as a program yet, but as each season goes by, Brian Gregory has been building a stronger roster and closing the gap between the Flyers and the Musketeers. I believe it is likely that the Flyers will win the Atlantic 10 Conference this season and continue to improve relative to Xavier and the rest of the Atlantic 10 basketball teams. However, that is only one man's humble opinion. As always, we'll see . . .

Simeon Survives at the Lline vs. Brooks (Sun-Times, December 16, 2009)

Hundreds of fans were turned away from Wednesday’s Red-South showdown between Simeon and host Brooks.

The fans who did manage to get a ticket were rewarded with a thriller, as No. 2 Simeon earned a 46-41 victory over the No. 14 Golden Eagles.

The score was knotted at 32 heading into the final period.

Simeon held a 38-37 lead with two minutes remaining, but managed to salt the game away by sinking eight of 10 free throws down the stretch. Brandon Spearman and sophomore Jelani Neely each hit four of the foul shots.

Spearman led all scorers with 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

Simeon coach Robert Smith said he was a little apprehensive knowing his team had a big game against No. 1 Whitney Young this weekend.

‘‘I’d be lying if I told you that Young wasn’t on our mind from the coaching staff to the kids,’’ Smith said. ‘‘There’s no way we would take a well-coached, quality team like Brooks for granted, but I know these kids were thinking a little about this weekend.’’

Juwan Staten’s Diary #6 – So Far, So Good (Juwan Staten, Oak Hill - Dec. 15, 2009)

So far the season is going good. We are 13-0 and playing at a high level. We won our game at home last night by 24 points, despite playing without one of our leading scorers, Roscoe Smith, who was out with a twisted ankle.

As of right now, as a team, we are shooting the highest free throw percentage in Oak Hill history (but just barely). So hopefully, we can keep that up.

Noblesville Run Too Much for Lafayette Jeff (jconline - Dec. 19, 2009)

In what has become a trend, the Bronchos found themselves in another close ballgame, their third in a row. This time, Jeff came up short with a 67-60 loss to the Millers (4-1, 1-1).

Six of Jeff's nine field goals in the first half were from 3-point range, including Jesse Berry's banked-in buzzer beater to give the Bronchos a 30-24 lead.

Berry had 15 of his game-high 23 points in the first half.

For the game, Berry finished 10-of-13 from the stripe.

Kalamazoo Central's Devin Oliver a Matchup Nightmare in Maroon Giants' Win (Dec. 18, 2009)

KALAMAZOO — At a smooth 6-foot-7 with a shooting guard's mentality, Kalamazoo Central's Devin Oliver can be a bit of a matchup nightmare.

K-Central coach Mike Thomas is just thankful he doesn't have to deal with that problem.

"He's one of those guys that can play — he's just all over the court," Thomas said of Oliver, who dropped 26 points, nine rebounds and six steals in the Maroon Giants' 70-34 Southwestern Michigan Athletic Conference nondivisional win over St. Joseph Friday.

"He's long, he had a few rebounds, steals — he was two rebounds away from a double-double... He's a matchup problem for a lot of teams. I'm just glad he's on my team, to be honest."

The Maroon Giants face their first real test of the season today when they travel to face perennial power Saginaw Arthur Hill at 4 p.m.

Disappointing losses last night for Spearman, Berry, and Oliver.

Young Takes Simeon in # 1 vs. # 2 Showdown (Sun-Times - Dec. 19, 2009)

The top-ranked Dolphins won 62-55 over No. 2 Simeon.

Dayton-bound senior Brandon Spearman led the Wolverines (4-1) with 15 points and eight rebounds.

Kokomo Turns Back Jeff (jconline - Dec. 19, 2009)

Lafayette Jeff coach Scot Bunnell is patiently anticipating the return of 6-foot-4 junior center Jason Washington from injury.

Without Washington, who Bunnell hopes will be ready for the Dec. 30 Warsaw tournament, the Bronchos were outrebounded 50-32 in a 75-72 loss to undefeated Kokomo on Saturday at Crawley Center.

It was the Bronchos' fourth straight game that came down to the wire, three of those losses by a combined 12 points.

Jesse Berry scored 18, but was limited to just four in the second half in his second-lowest scoring output of the season. Berry also had six rebounds, five steals and two blocks.

'Hard-nosed' Saginaw Arthur Hill Hands Kalamazoo Central First Loss (Dec. 19, 2009)

Fresh off Kalamazoo Central's 81-74 loss to the host team in the Saginaw Arthur Hill Pre-Holiday Classic, the second-year head coach got right to the point.

"There's no party on the bus," Thomas said, when asked about the mood on the ride home for his team, which is now 3-1 after starting the season ranked No. 1 in Class A by several publications.

Senior Devin Oliver scored 18 points and junior T.J. Buchanan had 16 for K-Central, which made eight 3-pointers but was only 8-for-18 from the foul line.

"I told my guys, being No. 1 in the state, it can be tough for you because you're going to get everybody's best game," Thomas said. "Arthur Hill, they've been there before. They didn't panic. Actually, they were drooling to be able to knock off the No. 1 team."

I think the surprise player thus far has to be Ralph Hill and the numbers he's putting up.
He's headed for First Team All-State with these shooting performances.

Six three pointers in one game??? From a guy that's 6'7" too.
Ralph Hill was a real steal for Brian Gregory.

Spiece Run N Slam - Fort Wayne (A Coaches Journey - May 3, 2009)

We ended up losing our first game of tournament play to Team Cbiz out of Ohio. Ralph Hill dominated us in the first half and the first quarter mainly where he had a handful of dunks after blowing by our defenders. He then proceeded to bury a 3 after I told our guy to give him space because he couldn't shoot which he heard and took exception to.

"The kid with the inside-outside game chose Dayton over Akron, Butler, Notre Dame, and Georgia Tech.

He was good to say the least. We ended up scoring 101 points and losing which is tough in the time frame of a high school game. We could not stop him."

The Ironton Classic (Ironton Tribune - Dec. 21, 2009)

Oak Hill Academy roster filled with top prospects

By Jim Walker | The Tribune

The Ironton Classic has a who’s who lineup. It also has a team that reads like a who’s who list.

The Oak Hill Academy Warriors — an annual national power — brings its usual roster of talent players who are being heavily recruited by the top college programs.

The Warriors will play Columbus Walnut Ridge at 5 p.m. Monday, December 21st and Cincinnati Princeton at 9 p.m. Tuesday, December 22nd in the Ironton Classic at the Ironton Sports Center.

Oak Hill Academy is expected to be ranked No. 1 in the next national poll following the loss of top-ranked Findlay Academy to Columbus Northland last Thursday.

The team roster has Juwan State who has all ready signed with the University of Dayton and Bay Moussa Keita who is headed for Syracuse.

Their teammates haven’t signed, but they are being heavily recruited by Division I schools.

Martins Abele is on the list of Manhattan, North Carolina-Asheville and Radford. Roscoe Smith is talking with Connecticut, Duke and Georgetown.

Doron Lamb’s list of suitors includes Kentucky, Connecticut, Ohio, Kansas and Arizona. Pe ‘Shon Howard is being courted by South Florida, Georgia Tech, Virginia, Northwestern and UCLA.

Oak Hill — located in Mouth of Wilson, Va. — has an enrollment of 150. The program has won national championships seven times and been runners-up on six occasions including last season.

Oak Hill Academy, Princeton Post Wins (Ironton Tribune - Dec. 22, 2009)

West Virginia head coach Bob Huggins was in the stands, but he had to play second fiddle to the Oak Hill Academy Warriors who rolled past the Columbus Walnut Ridge Scots 87-56 Monday in the opening round of the Ironton Basketball Classic.

Oak Hill (14-0) had five players in double figures led by Roscoe Smith with 18. Smith is being recruited by Duke, Georgetown, and Connecticut.

Dayton recruit Juwan Staten had 15 points on 7-12 shooting along with Doron Lamb who is being courted by Kentucky, UConn, and Kansas. Pe’Shon Howard had 13 and 7-foot-1 Martins Abele added 10.

While Huggins was on a recruiting trip Monday, Kentucky head coach John Calipari is to attend Tuesday’s 9 p.m. game between Oak Hill Academy and Cincinnati Princeton.

If any of you are heading to Ironton tonight, don't be surprized if you see Brian Gregory in the stands.

Oak Hill Academy Downs Princeton 68-47 (Ironton Tribune - Dec. 22, 2009)

The Oak Hill Academy Warriors used a big second half to pull away from the Cincinnati Princeton Vikings 68-47 Tuesday before a capacity crowd in The Ironton Basketball Classic.

Oak Hill, the No. 1 prep team in the country, took an 18-15 first quarter lead despite 10 points by Princeton’s Jay McCants.

Oak Hill went on a 9-1 run over the final 3:30 of the half to lead 30-23.

Princeton got within 30-28 to start the second half as Jordan Sibert scored 5 points.

But Roscoe Smith’s 3-point play put the Warriors’ lead at 37-30 with 2:28 left in the quarter.

Oak Hill then went on a 12-3 run to end the quarter and a 13-5 run to start the fourth quarter to lead 55-36 with 4:48 to play.

Oak Hill (15-0) was led by Doron Lamb with 20 points and Smith with 15.

McCants had 16 points for Princeton (3-1), ranked No. 29 in the country.

Simeon Wins Despite Slow Start (Sun-Times - Dec. 21, 2009)

Senior forward Brandon Spearman and freshman swingman Jabari Parker took turns dominating as the No. 2 Wolverines shook off a slow start to throttle Dunbar 59-36 in a first round Public League Holiday tournament game Monday night at Malcolm X College.

Spearman scored ten of his team-best 12 points in the third quarter.

Kalamazoo Central Comes Out Swinging Against Rockford (mlive - Dec. 30, 2009)

More than 2,500 fans on hand witnessed the Maroon Giants' response, which came in the form of an 85-72 nonleague win over Rockford in a nonleague showdown of Class A state powers.

Third-ranked K-Central outran, outmuscled and outboarded (46-30) the Rams — the heart and hustle areas of the game — punctuated with adrenaline-rushing Devin Oliver dunks (four of them) and sprinkled with great emotion.

Rockford (3-2) is one of those well-coached, pesky teams that just won't go away, evidenced by a 7-0 run that trimmed the Maroon Giants' (4-1) lead to one, 64-63, with just under six minutes remaining.

That's when Thomas called timeout, and Hughes and Oliver took over. Hughes (21 points) buried a 3-pointer from the top of the key, the 6-foot-7 Oliver (22 points, 12 rebounds, four steals) gracefully spun through the lane and converted an old-fashioned three-point play, and Hughes followed with his own "and-one" in a dizzying surge requiring only 55 seconds.

It was the start of a game-ending 21-9 run.

It has not been a lucky week for the teams of the Flyers' HS Class of 2010 recruits:

Warsaw Downs Lafayette Jeff (jconline - Dec. 31, 2009)

Warsaw's boys basketball team used a 33-21 fourth-quarter scoring advantage to defeat Lafayette Jeff 74-63 on Wednesday night.

The Tigers made 31 of 36 free throws in the victory.

Senior Jesse Berry led Jeff with 24 points.

Simeon Silences Joliet, Shoemaker (Sun-Times - Dec. 29, 2009)

No Joliet player scored in double figures as Simeon prevailed 52-36. The Wolverines will face Waukegan in tonight’s championship game.

Simeon’s 14-2 run spanning the end of the third and start of the fourth quarter put the game away.

Darien Walker led the No. 6 Wolverines with 12 points and Dayton-bound senior Brandon Spearman added 11 for Simeon (10-2).

“Our defense and rebounding were the key to the game,” Smith said. “And I thought the guard play was good, we did a good job of pressuring them.”

Flyer Recruit Staten a Spectator in Team's Win Over Ball State (Doug Harris, DDN - Jan. 6, 2010)

Juwan Staten has been thriving this season, averaging about 13 points and seven assists for Oak Hill, which suffered its first defeat last week after 16 straight victories. The Warriors were knocked off by Westchester High School, the defending big-school state champions in California, in the final of the Les Schwab tournament in Portland, Oregon. Oak Hill is ranked No. 2 nationally, Westchester No. 3.

Thanks Elvis - an excellent addition to the thread:

Kalamazoo (Mich.) Central High School coach Mike Thomas thinks UD signee Devin Oliver ultimately will make the leap to the pros. The 6-foot-7 wing, who has been sidelined recently with a foot injury, is averaging 18 points, 11 rebounds and five assists and is versatile enough to play all five positions.

“You guys are getting a great player,” Thomas said. “I called it last year: Devin is going to be in the NBA.

“I say that because he’s skilled, and he’s a sponge. I know he’s going to a good program that’s going to teach him nothing but the right way. Once he takes everything in, the sky’s the limit. He can shoot it, he can post, but the best thing about him is how he shares the ball.”

The Flyers’ five-member 2010 recruiting class is ranked 23rd nationally by Rivals.com, one spot behind Xavier. Staten is rated as the 44th-best prospect individually, but he’s not the only one to make the Rivals’ top 150.

Chicago Simeon guard Brandon Spearman has cracked that exclusive list at No. 116. He’s known for being a lock-down defender and blossomed offensively last summer. He’s averaging 15 points and seven rebounds on a team loaded with Division I prospects.

“We’re only playing him 18-19 minutes because of the balance we have,” said Simeon coach Robert Smith, whose squad is ranked fourth in the Illinois all-division state poll. “If we had to keep him out there longer, his stats would definitely be higher. But we’re a well-rounded team and don’t have to kill him.

“He’s doing well, REAL well. ... We wouldn’t be where we are without him.”

The 6-foot-6, 200-pound Ralph Hill of Westerville North was recruited by UD as a power forward, but he recently put his shooting range on display against Dublin Scioto by knocking down six 3-pointers.

He’s averaging 21.5 points and 7.0 rebounds.

“He’s attracting a lot of individual attention, which is a compliment to him,” coach Kevin Thuman said. “He’s getting a lot of combination defenses — box-and-ones, face-guarding, making it tough for him to catch the ball. They’re not playing him straight up.

“But a lot of things (UD coach Brian) Gregory liked about him are there. He’s real athletic, really runs the floor well and plays defense.”

Although 6-1 guard Jesse Berry of Lafayette (Ind.) Jefferson was suspended for one game for undisclosed reasons, he’s been a scoring machine again this season. He’s averaging 25.5 points, 5.3 rebounds and 5.1 assists while shooting 40 percent on 3s and 47 percent overall.

But Lafayette Jeff, which plays in perhaps the toughest prep league in the state, has struggled to a 7-4 record.

“He’s doing real well, but he’s all we’ve got,” coach Scot Bunnell said.

Jesse Berry (31 points) and Ralph Hill (30 points) both had good games last night.

Lafayette Jeff Holds Off No. 10 Zionsville (jconline – Jan. 8, 2010)

For the past month, Lafayette Jeff kept falling just short against some of the state's better boys basketball teams. That trend, and a three-game losing streak, ended at Crawley Center on Friday.
Jesse Berry's 31 points and six assists led Lafayette Jeff to a 67-64 Hoosier Crossroads Conference victory over Class 4A No. 10 Zionsville.

"We needed to grind it out," said Berry, who scored 11 points in both the first and fourth quarters.

After hitting his first three 3-point attempts, Berry began attacking the basket and went on to make all 10 of his free throws.

"In the first half, I was making them, but I felt like I was still settling," said Berry, who will play at Dayton. "I felt like I could get to the basket."

Kalamazoo Central defense suffocates Portage Central in big win (mlive – Jan. 8, 2010)

PORTAGE — Portage Central boys basketball coach Corey McNeal called his team's 67-21 loss Friday to Class A No. 4 Kalamazoo Central a "long night."

Kalamazoo Central (5-1, 2-0 SMAC Central) was led by T.J. Buchanan's 16 points. Eco Dunning and Tyler Bell each added 12 for the Maroon Giants, who played without Devin Oliver, Dyland Hughes and Darius Norman.

This is the second time in the last two seasons where Berry has been benched by his coach for what appears to be disciplinary reasons. These are significant red flags, IMO.

Gregory has recruited very good kids up to this point. They play unselfishly and put the team first. But I have to question...is BG rolling the dice here with Jesse Berry?

#309 ·
Maybe, maybe not. Last year he was sat for a short time because he wasn't putting forth effort in class. I believe that was as much from his mother as it was from anyone else. A second incident is a bit concerning, but if you follow high school kids closely, not sure why you'd want to, you'll find plenty of potential red flags. Lord knows 17 year old me did some really stupid things that even 19 year old me wouldn't have done. If he has serious issues, and unless something gets reported later I don't think he does, he'll never see a UD uniform anyway. If he's a normal teen with some growing up to do, at UD with BG as a mentor/coach is a pretty good place for him to do just that.

#310 ·
whatever the case it's not the recent UD recruit profile...I don't see BG putting up with Jesse's suspensions so he'll either never be a Flyer or he'll be on a short leash...the Flyer's squad is a very close group that is repeatedly reported about their fun and hard work they enjoy together...not sure what the suspensions are with Jesse and not trying to unfairly judge him but it's not what we're used to hearing bout BG recruits...
