Flyers aim for a great class (Doug Harris, Dayton Daily News - June 28, 2009)

Dayton Flyers 2009-10 Depth Chart with 2008-09 Scoring (5 Seniors):

PG: London Warren (6-0 Sr./ 4.1 PPG), Rob Lowery (6-2 Sr./ 7.5 PPG)
SG: Marcus Johnson (6-3 Sr./ 11.8 PPG), Mickey Perry (6-2 Sr./ 4.6 PPG), Paul Williams (6-4 Soph./ 2.2 PPG)
SF: Chris Wright (6-8 Jr./ 13.3 PPG), Chris Johnson (6-5 Soph./ 6.3 PPG), Luke Fabrizius (6-9 Soph./ 4.3 PPG)
PF: Devin Searcy (6-10 Jr./ 2.8 PPG), Josh Benson (6-10 Fr./ DNP)
C: Kurt Huelsman (6-10 Sr./ 3.6 PPG), Matt Kavanaugh (6-10 Fr./ DNP)

Brian Gregory has 6 scholarships available for the 2010 Class (the 5 present seniors plus Stephen Thomas’ scholarship) and the following wish list:

1 point guard
1 shooting guard
2 combo guards
1 combo forward
Adreian Payne

The point guard scholarship went to Juwan Staten.

At the present time, Brandon Spearman and Jalen Steele are the front-runners for the shooting guard scholarship.

Both combo guard scholarships have now been awarded, the first going to Drake transfer Josh Parker, who will be a junior in 2010-11 (Josh Parker video) and the second to Jesse Berry.

The combo forward scholarship went to Ralph Hill, who appears to be a slightly bigger version of multi-skilled, athletic Chris Johnson. Brian Gregory was in early on both Ralph Hill and Chris Johnson, and both flew under the national radar (i.e. head coaches of BCS-conference schools and the basketball recruiting websites) before committing to Dayton. As you recall, Chris Johnson was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie team in March 2009, which was quite an accomplishment for a reserve SF playing behind Chris Wright. At 6’-5” Chris Johnson is quite capable of playing the SG position against opponents’ taller SGs. Brian Gregory is very keen to stock his roster with players who can play 2 positions – “interchangeable parts” as he calls them – and is doing a great job of so.

The sixth and final scholarship available for 2010 is being held for PF/C Adreian Payne, who may or may not commit to Dayton. As many of you know already, Payne is still very raw, but has incredible upside potential. If Payne commits elsewhere, Brian Gregory may offer it to another 2010 prospect or hold the scholarship for a 2011 prospect.

It is relevant to ask how much UD’s recruiting has improved since Brian Gregory was named head coach of the Dayton Flyers.

This question is best answered by looking at the last two recruiting classes that were signed by Oliver Purnell before he left for Clemson:

University of Dayton Prospects: HS Class of 2002 (Scout.com)

University of Dayton Prospects: HS Class of 2003 (Scout.com)

If Chris Wright has a monster season in 2009-10 (i.e. 18 PPG, 8 RPG, 50% FGs, and 40% from 3-point range) he may well forego his senior year at UD and head to the NBA a year early as a first-round draft pick. However, given the very strong field of players who will likely be in the 2010 NBA Draft, coupled with Derrick Brown's disappointing # 40 selection in the 2009 NBA Draft, I consider it far more likely that Wright will play his senior year at UD.

If Wright does leave early for the NBA, the Flyers will still have junior Chris Johnson, junior Luke Fabrizius, and freshman Ralph Hill available to man the 3-spot in 2010-11. This means that Brian Gregory will not find himself in Chris Mack's situation of having to waste a valuable scholarship on a career pine-jockey in a desperate attempt to fill a hole in the roster after the unexpected departure of the team's best player.

Dayton has not passed Xavier as a program yet, but as each season goes by, Brian Gregory has been building a stronger roster and closing the gap between the Flyers and the Musketeers. I believe it is likely that the Flyers will win the Atlantic 10 Conference this season and continue to improve relative to Xavier and the rest of the Atlantic 10 basketball teams. However, that is only one man's humble opinion. As always, we'll see . . .

Every coach rolls the dice on a 'problem' recruit from time to time. It's part of the college basketball landscape. I don't see anything from Berry that makes me think that he is going to be bad for the Flyers. If Dayton has a strong team identity they won't let one player come in and disrupt that anyways. If he continues to get in trouble I might start to worry, but a few coach-imposed suspensions aren't that big of a deal. Like Adam said, think back to when you were 17. I know that I did a lot of stupid things that I wouldn't do now, or even at 19-20!

#313 ·
The Berry thing is a non-story unless it persists for the remainder of the season. Maybe he cut a class, maybe he threw an elbow in practice, maybe he mumbled something under his breath that the coach overheard...not a big deal.

Now if this were a Xavier recruit it would be just another example of how XU is recruiting turds. Lol

#319 ·
My bad, it must have been all the talk of AP and the possibilty of being 1 over. But as to Juco...unless he's an All American big then I don't see it happening...the Flyers though go into the Chris Wright situation in good shape...if he leaves UD is an attractive spot for transfers and late signees...

#321 ·
If people are truly worried about Jesse Berry being up to UD's standards, they'll sh*t bricks if Geron Johnson ever signs with UD.

#323 ·
What's wrong with 35th? Not guaranteed but who knows what '11 will bring. Go when you have the best shot to make a roster. I wouldn't blame him for leaving or staying. He just needs some reliable(good luck) information to base his decision on.

Crawford's a threat to leave simply because this is his 4th year out of high school. If he hadn't injured his knee in 12th grade he'd probably be a senior somewhere now. He's already pushing being elderly in draft circles. I fully expect him to declare, then go by the workouts and silly combine the NBA puts on now. Outside of injury, he's not going to be at Xavier for his full eligibility. He should graduate after next season if he stays, which is probably 50/50 at best. 5 years is pushing it, 6 years won't get him anywhere near the league.

Same with Wright. He's going to declare, you can pretty much guarantee that. The NCAA gives you one free pass, and he'll take it. What he hears leading to the deadline will determine if he stays in the draft or returns.

It will be interesting to see how the new rule will impact these guys this year. If you declare you only have until May 8 (instead of June 15) to back out.

The pre-draft camp is usually in late May, so guys will have to make up their minds before the camp and before workouts are in full swing.

Remember that Ralph Hill and Devin Oliver are Rivals 2-star recruits. The complete ineptitude of that ranking system shall be revealed once again. It's like Byron Larkin is coming up with this sh@t.

Crawford will be gone after this year for all the reasons that Adam mentioned and more. I give him a less than 5% chance of returning.

I also think CW declares. Now whether he stays in or not is a different story. Quite honestly I thought he had a better shot last year, but there is still a lot of time this year for him to show what he's got.

from what I know of CJ in high school is he was primarily an inside player and that is the reason he was under recruited. This video of Hill while a highlight film shows an offensive player way beyond his years. The last 30 secs show a player with great offensive skills that is able to read what the defense is giving and he makes great decisions and he's not 1 dimensional.

The #1 problem I see with young players is poor decision making and drilling that down that means they don't understand what is going on (at either end), don't have ball handling skills or court vision to mitigate. Many get by on sheer athleticism, size or 1 dimensional skill.

Hill sees what's going on, is sound fundamentally, has good athleticism and is not 1 dimensional.

Maybe it is too early to start this discussion, but might the Flyers be a better team next year?

PG: Warren/Lowery vs. State/Parker/Berry
Edge: 2010 Flyers. Likely a huge upgrade offensively, but certainly worse defensively.

SG: M. Johnson/Perry/Williams vs. Williams/Spearman
Edge: 2009 Flyers. A lot experience lost with Marcus Johnson and Perry.

SF: Chris Johnson vs Chris Johnson/Hill
Edge: 2010 Flyers. CJ will be a candidate for first team A-10 and perhaps POY next year.

PF: Chris Wright/Fabrizius/Benson vs. Chris Wright/Fabrizius/Benson
Edge: 2010 Flyers. If he stays, I think Wright is capable of Perryman-esque senior year.

C: Huelsman/Searcy vs. Searcy/Kavanaugh
Edge: Draw. I think Searcy will be more effective with a higher-tempo team, which I suspect the Flyers will be.

So, without really relying too much on freshmen contribution (except Staten, who is already playing with and against D1 talent), the Flyers may be in for an upgrade at nearly every position.

Thoughts?

The only way we have a prayer of being better is if Wright stays. I'm sold on Parker after watching him in the scrimmage and hearing some inside talk about practice. I think all of our freshmen are going to have a long adjustment period, where they are not contributing like they will as sophomores. I have to think that the defense takes a big step back just from an experience standpoint.

We should be a better shooting team, but we will have some freshmen taking ill-advised shots. I think we are going to miss Huelsman to some extent. Yes, I said it. He is just a solid, physical player who has learned his role. I'll take that as a center in this league. Fans will be wishing we had a stopper at center for the early part of next season.

#342 ·
I think next year's team will average upwards of 80 points a game. It'll give up about 70. No way they'll be able to play the same kind of defense with so many freshmen, so BG will turn the offense loose a bit while the youngins bulk up and learn how to become a great defensive team. I think they will provide some very entertaining basketball while they grow. Can't even begin to guess how good they'll be without seeing the freshmen and whatever progression Benson and Kav make.

CJ also gained 20 lbs and grew an inch or two since his recruitment by Gregory. That helped. I was shocked at the difference between his physical appearance on his youtube clips and the first day I saw him playing for UD in scrimmage. He got a lot stronger. If he can continue to gain significant strength, I think it would make him a little bit better. He lost a few rebounds in that 20 rebound performance because he lacked just a little extra muscle.

Devin Oliver has arms and length, Chris Johnson and Josh Benson style. But Devin is very slight in the shoulders. I think he is going to play like a tall 2 or 3 early in his career. And that physical stature is going to keep him from getting many minutes right away. He is a big steals guy in highschool, getting into passing lanes with those arms. He has passing skills, and I love that he is a quality 3pt shooter.

Here is some Devin Oliver video. He broke a bone in his foot recently, but this apparently predates that.

If CW stays then the Flyers with Juwan at the point will be as good. If CW leaves I think it goes without saying we can't possibly perform to the same level. The trio of Marcus, London and Kurt have been the foundation of this program for the better part of their days at UD...you can't replace their production, experience and mindset with a bunch of kids right out of high school...
