I don't have a "horse" in the race, pun intended, but saw the game live and the infamous press conference on the sports news. Holloway & Lyons are street thugs in their own words. Mack is an enabler and watching the X president 's video, I felt he was creepy, nothing to do with what he said but how he said it and his general demeanor. If the program and the university need Mack, Holloway & Lyons to exhibit your identity,God bless you because you are heading for a big fall. I formerly rooted for X but no more. |

Re: Bad Behavior of XU Players Acceptable to Mack
I could have swore their words were, "were gangstas, not thugs, but tough guys ON THE COURT". Actually hat is the exact quote.
Xavier as choir boys were 1st round flameouts. The G Xavier plays deep into March. Trying to please rich white men nearly cost them their season. I don't really expect other fans to like us, and that is a good thing. Recruits sure love us though. |

Stophorse - you're right, that was Tu's exact quote. He explained what he meant by "gangsta".
Conversely, Stanford QB Andrew Luck, on an ESPN draft special/quarterback show, broke the huddle saying, "1, 2, 3, Killas". Gasp!! What a terrible kid. Oh wait, he's white.

I think the players were negatively affected by the nationwide bad press it received resulting from the actions on the floor and in the interviews following "the brawl." I guess they should have anticipated that a segment of those viewing the aftermath would not grasp the fact that their language would not be deemed any more acceptable by some than kids in the 50's using "hep cats" and other slightly less acceptable teen and early 20's slang. (That is all it was!) Some of our players are tough and others not so much. But only a simpleton with absolutely no knowledge of the modern lexicon of the 17-22 generation would have "indicted" Tu and Cheeks for their admitedly unwise use of the term, "gangsta" during the post game interviews. All its use did was give the press and others the opportunity to completely "forget" about the sucker punch thrown on Kenny Frease's eye by Yancy Gates of the Bearcats and the subsequent stomping on Frease when he was down on the floor by one of Gates' teammates. Few if anyone seemed to be a bit put off by Yancy Gates' comment that he would not be apologizing to Frease as a result of his sucker punch to Kenny's eye. Rich white guys had nothing to do with our team's lack of excellence in games following "the brawl." It simply took time for the players to adjust their thinking and aggressive style of play back to December 10 mode. It took a while but they finally got their "gangsta mojo" back. And if any of you took offense to that last sentence, then you still don't get it!!!

I just want the team I support to be in a stronger conference. I'd prefer it to be a stronger A-10! To me that would mean every member would have at least 2 trips to the NCAA Tourney and 5 winning seasons during each 10-year cycle. It would also be great for every program to seriously challenge for a league title (either regular season or Tourney) at least once during that same period of time. |

Re: Bad Behavior of XU Players Acceptable to Mack
Clearly you did not listen to the actual press conference.

Nick, as to horse's comment about the rich white people, I'm pretty sure we don't know exactly what went on behind closed doors between the administration and the players. I suspect that had some impact on their recovery from the negative press of people who didn't understand Tu. Maybe it's better we don't know. But I concur, they returned to the strong team by NCAA time.

Re: Bad Behavior of XU Players Acceptable to Mack
Another year gone by, another middle-of-the-pack conference finish, no NCAA tourney and loss in the NIT for the Flyers. Sad, sad couple of decades to be a Flyer fan. Your and Muddy's envy and jealousy is more and more evident in every post you two make about X.

Re: Bad Behavior of XU Players Acceptable to Mack
I love how this thread was started because Xavier players ripped a water fountain off of the wall at Butler's venue in a fit of uncontrolled poor sportsmanship. Yet, even X fans assume that this thread is about the "brawl" and following extremely embarrassing press conference that made national news this year.
It tells a story that the title of this thread applies over and over again to the actions of the Xavier basketball program. It's just so perfectly fitting.

Re: Bad Behavior of XU Players Acceptable to Mack
It is kind of a race issue, because too many talking heads don't understand black culture at all. I don't think it is intended racism, but it is a prejudice based on their slang.
Taking his comment to mean Violent street thug is as stupid as getting someone a blanket when they say they are cool. |
