This is exactly like what we have -- that everyone complains about -- but it's worse.

Our deal is with CBS Sports. At least CBS hosts the NCAA tourney so our title game gets on the network on selection Sunday, and at least CBS Sports is in the sports package right by ESPN2, ESPNU and the other main sports channels (at least on my cable).

This is with NBC Sports. What the heck channel is that? Is that Versus (or what Versus used to be)? Apparently this NBC Sports Network just launched in January, so there's no reason to believe it's any higher profile than CBS college sports - plus without the NCAA tourney, the network will largely be irrelevant in March.

The article also says NBC Sports will broadcast the games on Comcast SportsNet (I think Comcast bought NBC, or just partners with them) -- but that's basically nothing since Comcast SportsNet already carries the CAA games all the time.

This seems to me to be a worse version of what we have. Wouldn't lose sleep over it.
NBC Sports is on the standard tier of cable for tens of millions of Americans. CBS Sports isn't even on the lowest digital tier on most cable providers. With Time Warner Cable you not only have to have the digital service, but you also have to have the sports package. This severely limits the amount of viewers this station receives.

No, it doesn't. CBS is in 45 million homes, nearly all of which are in the direct target market; people who like sports so much they will pay extra to watch them. NBC is in 75 million homes, many of which will never actually watch any of its programming. The numbers don't mean what you think they mean. Being on basic cable means more people can watch, it doesn't mean they will watch. You can take your guitar to Times Square and perform all day with a million people walking by, but the guy working bar gigs in front of 80 people every night will build a bigger fan base.

Being on CBS Sports is not the problem. The problem is not being on it enough. The A10 needs to present itself well enough to get 3-4 games on CBS Sports Network each week, and have all or the vast majority of the remaining conference games picked up through CBS regional.

We should have conference games every day. I'm not saying CBS Sports would pick us up every day, but it would give them more opportunities too. I personally don't see any improvement that NBC Sports has over CBS Sports.

Re: OT: CAA and NBC Sports New National TV Deal

The regional tie-ins with Comcast SportsNet is probably the best part of that deal.

In theory, the A-10's deal with CBS should be a good thing. On ESPN, the A-10 is always going to be an afterthought. But unfortunately, the A-10 seems to be an afterthought on CBS as well. So now the conference is just a lesser priority on a more obscure network.

And yes, having conference games only one day a week has done wonders towards limiting visibility.

Even right now, the only real competition that the A-10 has on CBS College Sports is C-USA (and also an occasional Mountain West or Patriot League game). Their ratings won't be the same once Memphis takes off for the Big East.
The CAA branches out to at least 3 cable channels... NBC Sports Network (formerly Versus), Comcast SportsNet (regional in many major markets) and The Comcast Channel (regional but limited usually to just Comcast cable).

The problem in Philadelphia is that CBS sells the games to Comcast SportsNet and they get aired there or on The Comcast Channel... which means we get bumped if a CAA is on the air and either the Flyers or Sixers are on that night.

CBS needs to have more cable channels and branch out with at least two more channels (Fox Sports College has 3 networks - one for Atlantic, one for MidWest and one for Pacific).

I guess Bernie is too busy massaging Greenwood at her Virginia Beach pad to be paying attention!

I agree. their national games will be similar arrangement to the A-10's national games on CBS College Sports. The big difference lies in the regional games. This is much better than the A-10 as it is on COMCAST, one of the most dominant cable systems in the A-10 geographic footprint. The fact that COMCAST also owns NBC and will want to promote its product helps. COMCAST CAA broadcasts will be on basic cable with no extra cost. Their regional games will have much larger audiences.

Yes laying down and taking it from behind is the same as giving up.

I'm one of the few Charlotte fans that believes we should move to CAA for all sports until the next FBS shake up.

Exactly. With Comcast already owning NBC, they will go the cheaper route and televise tons of CAA games on their regional broadcasts. For the local Comcast affilitates to televise A10 games, they either have to pay CBS for the feed, or produce it themselves. This deal is going to result in even less A10 regional games being televised, especially in Philadelphia where ComcastSportsNet and The Comcast Network are the only two stations to televise A10 regional broadcasts.

As far as CAA football goes, really, who cares. Nobody cares about FCS football. Comcast can televise as many of those games as they want. There just won't be many people watching. They probably don't care because they probably got the CAA rights for a song.

Good job, Bernie.

What else is there to talk about in the middle of February? Oh wait, your teams were still playing for something then.
