Re: 2012-2013 Dayton Flyers

"49 pounds in six months" has to be a mistake. That only happens when Sumo wrestlers eat pure lard for every meal.

I can see it being 49 pounds since arriving at UD. Even that is a lot in 1.5 years, but much more plausible.

Muddy’s Predictions – Rev. 0 – September 6, 2012

Predictions of the outcomes of A10 Conference games are necessarily based on a preconceived perception of a Predicted Order of Finish, taking into consideration the location of the game (home, neutral or away) and factoring in the match-ups (strengths and weaknesses at each position) of the individual players on the teams concerned.

For the purpose of predicting the Flyers’ individual A10 game results, I will be assuming the following:

Atlantic 10 Predicted Order of Finish:
1. Virginia Commonwealth
2. Dayton
3. St. Joseph's
4. Saint Louis
5. UMass
6. Butler
7. Temple
8. Richmond
9. La Salle
10. Xavier
11. St. Bonaventure
12. George Washington

13. Rhode Island
14. Charlotte
15. Fordham
16. Duquesne
The reason I have picked Dayton to finish second is because the Flyers have a very favorable A10 Conference schedule.

On September 14, 2012, Xavier lost Myles Davis and Jalen Reynolds for the 2012-13 season, leaving Chris Mack with only 8 scholarshipped players on his Roster.

Consequently, Xavier drops from # 10 to # 13 in Rev. 1 of Muddy's Predictions.

I went thru all the skeds and marked wins and losses for league play. Took into account which teams usually have home-court advantages, unbalanced sked, who plays who twice. Here is what I came up with for a loose predicted finish.

3) UMASS 12-4
4) VCU 11-5
5) ST. JOES 11-5

NONCON FORECAST: 9-5

A-10 FORECAST: 9-7

OVERALL PREDICTION: 18-12

Dayton has a tough schedule and things could be very bumpy early on, but there's a lot of home cooking to finish strong.

Arkansas State returns four starters including star guard Trey Finn and the team is expected to contend for the Sunbelt title. Arkansas State, coached by former LSU headman John Brady, upset Bonaventure in Olean last year, so this is a dangerous game.

Colorado won the Pac 10 last year and they have a good nucleus back from a 24-win team. Forward Andre Roberson is one of the league's best players.

I see Dayton losing to the Buffs and then getting nipped by a much improved BC squad in the second game. BC's frontcourt can hang with the Flyers but the PG slot is unsettled. Dilliard has to have a big game for the Flyers to pull the game out.

Final game of the Charleston classic could involve a game with either Charleston, St Johns, Auburn or Murray State. All have question marks but are beatable. I call it a win.

Back home Dayton gets another rude shock from a Manhattan team that won 21 games and returns all five starters, including standout guard George Beamon. Speedy Jaspers stun the home crowd.

Flyers get back on track with home wins over rebuilding Northern Illinois (5-26) and a good Weber State team that has to replace three starters, including its point guard and NBA lottery pick Damian Lilliard.

A trip to Alabama results in a loss. Tide is younger than last year's 21-win team - no more JaMychal Green or Tony Mitchell - and ripe for an upset, but I see Alabama avenging last year's loss in Dayton.

Back home again, the Flyers rip off wins vs Miami Ohio, Florida Atlantic, Illinois State and Murray State. Miami replaces longtime coach Charlie Coles and his methodical approach that often bothered Dayton. Florida Atlantic, coached by former GW boss Mike Jarvis, lost four key players to tranfer and is rebuilding.

Illinois State might have one of its best teams in years and should contend for the MVC title. Big forward Jackie Carmichael is a star and the team is full of good shooters. Flyers need this game and squeak out a home victory.

Murray State, meanwhile, lost three starters from its 30-win team and won't be quite as good. Another tough game that Dayton pulls out.

USC only won 6 games last season, but the team gets back a lot of healthy veterans who returned from injury, including former Fordham starting PG Jio Fontan. West Coast trips are always tough.

Dayton ends its noncon slate with a win over UAB, which replaced coach Mike Davis and has a thin roster.

The A-10 would be tied with the SEC in that scenario and only behind the Big East (8), ACC (6), Big 12 (6), and Big 10 (7).

VCU wins the auto-bid, gets a 6-seed.

Butler gets an at-large and an 11-seed.

UMass gets a play-in spot in the First Four and a 12-seed.

Saint Louis gets an at-large and a 7-seed.

Temple gets an at-large and a 9-seed.

5) Jerrell Wright, LaSalle

Dayton’s Josh Benson and GW's David are obviously fine players with all-league potential. Benson has always been a guy who, on paper and when you see him physically, should be among the league's best inside players. Pellom is an excellent defender who's terrific in transition, but his offense has always been the underwater side of his game.

I left both of the list because of injuries.

The Flyers' plodding and cheerfully annoying bigman (9 ppg, 6 rpb, 55% FG) might as well wear a lunch bucket on his head. Kavanaugh's game is all about effort, hustle - and smart positioning. He is not especially athletic and gets his shots blocked a lot, but Kavanaugh persists. He scores a lot on his own followups and actually has soft hands and a nice touch around the basket. He an excellent free-throw shooter at 80%, too.

Dayton has a fine point guard in Kevin Dilliard and two solid bigmen in Josh Benson and Matt Kavanaugh. After that, though, and there lots of questions. Vee Sandford, Georgetown transfer, will have to step in and step up right away. Hard for me to see this team getting to the postseason given what I know now. An above-.500 team, probably, but not much more.

Ranking the A-10 Coaches

1) Fran Dunphy (444-228)

2) Brad Stevens (139-40)

3) Shaka Smart (84-28)

4) Chris Mack (73-30)

Mack might be the best recruiter in the league and he is an above-average coach. He gives his players some freedom in a somewhat structured offense and his teams are tough defensively. His coaching acumen will get sorely tested this year with a thin, young roster and the league will learn a lot more about him.

5) Phil Martelli (313-216)

6) Chris Mooney, Richmond. (146-115)

7) Archie Miller, Dayton (20-13)

Miller hit the ground running, though he had a solid roster with which to work. He’s also recruited very well in a season and a half. Another young coach from a family with a long pedigree, Miller showed good X and Os on both sides of the ball in his first year and maximized the talent on his roster – the first sign of any fine coach. One year is too little to judge, however.

8) Derrick Kellogg, Massachusetts (64-65)

9) Mark Schmidt, Bonaventure (156-170)

10) John Giannini, LaSalle (244-239)

11) Mike Lonergan, GW (136-89)

12) Tom Pecora, Fordham (172-166)

13) Alan Major, Charlotte (23-36).

13-3 in this Atlantic 10? I don't think so. Not with that front court.

z8 and Muddy are on fire tonight. Their predictions are pure comedy.

P.S.- Muddy, that last post I think you've posted close to a dozen times already this week, and probably 100 since the end of last season. No one read it or clicked any of your links the first time, probably aren't doing it now. Save us all some scrolling...

If UD does beat Xavier finally, at least it will be after Jan. 20. Carter, Reagan (2), Bush, Clinton (2), Bush (2), Obama, Romney. Sad, sad state of affairs in Flyer land.

Re: 2012-2013 Dayton Flyers

Those predictions are a little ambitious even for you Muddy. I appreciate the loss at Umass, but undefeated at home - I don't think so.... You will struggle at LaSalle and St Joes at home should be a loss too. I can almost get on board with 11 wins considering you get most of the tough opponents at home, but you still haven't shaken the curse of Archie's predecessor (who's name I shall not repeat) so I will say........ Oh I don't know....... let's go with 8-8.....

Dayton actually has a pretty good front court this season.

Wow, he had identical stats in both of their identical wins over GW. Oh, wait, you just posted two links to the same performance.

Re: 2012-2013 Dayton Flyers

Muddy actually has a point, Dayton's front court should be solid, and could be very good if Benson can be what he was before the injury. Kavanaugh is solid, I would expect growth from Gavrilovic and Oliver, and they add two impressive freshmen who should be able to give quality minutes.

The backcourt will determine Dayton's level of success this year. Dillard is great, and I love what I hear about Sanford. Derenbecker and Oliver can give minutes at the 2. Khari Price is a total unknown. The talent is there, but depth isn't. Need to stay healthy.

I feel pretty good about this team. Not going to predict 13-3. That would be like saying a 3 handicap is going to shoot 69, possible but very unlikely. But I see no reason why this team can't go 11-5 given reasonable health.

This will probably be the year. If Dayton can't get it done this year it might be another 30. Xavier is looking at about a .500 record this year.

Re: 2012-2013 Dayton Flyers

^^^I'm seriously worried about the game in Cincy this year because you're right. XU was a lot better on the "pre season paper" last year then UD and we almost pulled it out in OT at Cincy. UD is without a doubt (if Davis and Reynolds aren't playing) better on paper then XU this preseason....we will lose by 17 down there.
