Another DDN article today, this one about Alex Gavrilovic: http://www.daytondailynews.com/news/...-season/nSgLD/

That is an exciting article. The big Frenchmen could be an impact player on the inside this year.

Good article. Gavrilovic showed some flashes of offensive skill last year, and I excited to see what he can bring to the table. The extra strength should help him improve the matador defense he seemed to display at times last year, hopefully.

Re: 2012-2013 Dayton Flyers

Muddy, I promise this is the last time I will say this, but I expect Oliver to start at the 3. Everyone is assuming Derenbecker will be the starter and I am not quite sure why. He started for half of a season as a freshman on a team that was under 500. Oliver started for half the season on a pretty good Dayton team last year, and put up pretty good numbers while he did it. I expect Oliver to make a jump in production this year.

Also, if Dayton is to improve as a defensive team, I think it is important to set the tone from the start of the game. Oliver is one of the better defensive players on the team (I know nothing of MD's D). I understand his versatility makes him a nice 6th man. But I think his ability is going to put him on the court at the beginning of the game.

I think it depends on the development of Oliver's offensive game.

It seems like this will be a strong team. Oliver added weight, Robinson added weight, Scott looks to be a Charles Little like weight room freak. Plus you have Kavanaugh and Gavrilovic, and Sanford has some good size. I think Benson added muscle, too.

Playing Dayton won't be real fun this year, they will not be a finesse team inside. They're gonna out-muscle most of their opponents. If the skill level can come close to matching the strength, could be a very good team.

I saw a pic of the team photo on Facebook yesterday. Scott looks like a grown up man already, not some project freshmen. He looks every bit of 6-9 too if the measurement of Alex is right. I look for Scott to get decent minutes this year for his rebounding and inside presence alone.

scott appears to be flat footed, can't say the same thing for Robinson (which is probably why he appears about an inch taler than Gavs in that picture.

Re: 2012-2013 Dayton Flyers

After watching the Red and Blue scrimmage today, I think we will be very strong in the paint and I'm a little worried about our perimeter shooting. We might have some good perimeter shooters, but I haven't seen it demonstrated yet.

Our overall athleticism went way up from last year, but shooting skills are questionable from our jump shooters and bombers. I think we can be a much better defensive team. I love the addition of Jalen Robinson and Devon Scott. They are going to be tough post players for us. Benson looks like he fully recovered to me. He was quick and jumping well.

Jalen Robinson is the guy I like the most. I think he has an impact for us this year.

Re: 2012-2013 Dayton Flyers

Shooting is the hardest thing to gauge in something like a Red and Blue game. Archie even said it post game, they are coming off 5 or 6 straight days of tough practices. Right now is the hardest they will practice all year. They looked worn out. That said, this definitely looks like a team predicated on attacking the rim. Won't be many games with 18-24 three point attempts.

I like the big-to-big passing in this offense. All four guys today showed great vision and touch on interior passes, and I remember Gavrilovic being pretty good in that area, too. That kind of action really puts the pressure on the defense.

Hard not to be impressed with Jalen Robinson. Very skilled with great footwork. As I expected he looks to be more of a face up dribble drive type of player, at least early on in his career. He cut to space very well and was rewarded with a few buckets for it. Also impressed with him sitting on Dillard and exploiting the mismatch for an easy bucket. A lot of young kids won't recognize it, he did.

Josh Benson looked great. He's probably in better shape than everyone else due to his rehab all summer, plus he's probably not getting after it quite as hard in practice. His legs looked fresh. He didn't lose any athleticism or bounce, that's for sure. Will be interesting to see if his mid-range game is for real. He didn't make any today, I don't think, but he took quite a few 15 footers with confidence, and in rhythm. If he can find the range and use that as a weapon, look out.

Devon Scott is still very raw, but my goodness the kid is a fighter. I don't know how many minutes he will get, 8-12 range is my guess, but opponents better pack a lunch for when he does get on the floor. It will be work to face him.

Re: 2012-2013 Dayton Flyers

Agreeing with Elvis and Adam, our interior no longer appears to be a weakness. I was impressed with Robinson in particular - he appears to be more fluid than most of the bigs UD gets (Benson notwithstanding). I see both Scott and Robinson getting regular minutes this year and foul trouble seems to be a diminished threat (with the exception of Dillard).

And I remember thinking to myself in the first half, "If this is 70% of Josh Benson (his estimation in a recent article) then watch out when he gets healthy." If UD is going to surprise in the A-10 this season, Josh Benson will be a big piece of the puzzle. He already showed the maturation of his game before his injury last season, and now his body is finally manly.

One trait I pray was not indicative of the team this season was the horrendous free throw shooting. It seemed they shot about 40%. I hope it was just tired legs.

Muddy's Observations:

(1) In 2012-13, Archie Miller has a lot of flexibility in his frontcourt (i.e. players available and able to play multiple positions), but little flexibility in his backcourt.

(2) In 2013-14, Archie Miller will have a lot of flexibility in his backcourt, but little flexibility in his frontcourt.

(3) In 2012-13, Junior Devin Oliver will likely get most of his minutes at the SF position.

(4) In 2013-14, Senior Devin Oliver will likely get most of his minutes at the PF position.

(5) The 2013-14 Flyers team will be shorter, quicker, and more athletic than the 2012-13 team.

(6) As deep as the 2012-13 Flyers are, the 2013-14 team will be even deeper, as freshmen Kyle Davis, Scoochie Smith, and Kendall Pollard should be adequately prepared to contribute quality minutes from the first game of the 2013-14 season (if they get the opportunity).

(7) I would not attempt to propose a 2013-14 Depth Chart at this point, and Archie Miller might not decide his Depth Chart until the first game of the 2013-14 season.

(8) I suspect that the 13th scholarship for the 2013-14 season will go to either a HS senior PF/C (or JUCO transfer PF/C) in the spring of 2013, or else Miller will use it to obtain one of the 400+ Dvision I transfers who will come onto the market in the spring of 2013.

(9) I would be very surprized if Archie Miller accepted another commitment for the 2013-14 season prior to the spring of 2013.

(10) I expect that Kyle Davis, Scoochie Smith, and Kendall Pollard will all submit their signed National Letters of Intent on November 14th and that they will have no eligibility issues (academic or otherwise).

Dayton Flyers 2012-13 Roster (Dayton Flyers)

Matt Kavanaugh has already been removed from the Roster, and I would be very surprized if he ever rejoins the Flyers.

EDIT: new article added:

Almost Certainly, Matt Kavanaugh Has Played His Last Game at UD (Tom Archdeacon, DDN - October 24, 2012)
Although Kavanaugh is a senior and would have another year of eligibility left should he be reinstated — he can make his case in May of 2013 — I don’t see that happening.

When you embarrass your school, the basketball program and yourself, no one at UD is going to push for you to return next year so the entire issue can be rehashed again.

Tough break for the Flyers. Hard to find a 6-10 guy who can play post defense, rebound and hustle for putbacks.

The loss of experience will hurt early on. Gavrilovic will get a chance to shine, and I think he will, and the two frosh big forwards will get lots of minutes from the get-go.

Hopefully Benson recovers almost in full.

I suppose Dayton will become quicker and more athletic at every spot on the floor.
Due to the Flyers’ frontcourt depth, Kavanaugh’s departure is far from devastating. By the time March rolls around, it could even turn out to be a blessing in disguise, as Kavanaugh was the Flyers’ least-athletic big man.

Fifth-year senior Josh Benson was always going to get as many minutes as he could handle this season, but Alex Gavrilovic, Jalen Robinson, and Devon Scott now will be getting Matt Kavanaugh’s 24 minutes per game.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Benson Happy to be Back as Flyers Return to Court (Tom Archdeacon, DDN - October 13, 2012)
“I’m planning to be a part of everything now, but I’m not where I want to be yet,” Benson said. “I’m nowhere near close to where I was last year, but it’s a gradual deal and I’m getting back in the swing of things.”

He said he’ll wear a knee brace this year, “just to be on the safe side.”

Not only has he been getting healthier, but he’s heavier — and that’s by design.

He said he’s now closing in on 230 pounds. He said he weighed 208 last season — too light to bang around inside with the most prominent big men on the Flyers’ schedule — and had come into UD at 194 pounds.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

UD's Gavrilovic Beefs Up, Ready for New Season (Doug Harris, DDN - October 17, 2012)
But the player making perhaps the biggest jump physically is Gavrilovic.

The 6-9 France native weighed 225 at the end of the last season and is up to 250 pounds this year. He also improved his bench press, going from six reps of 185 pounds (the weight used at the NBA Combine) to 16 this year.

“I play a position where you have to be strong and be physical in rebounding and on defense and offense. Everything you do on the block and in the paint is physical. That will help me out a lot,” Gavrilovic said.

Although coach Archie Miller was pleased with the off-season dedication from all the Flyers, he said Gavrilovic was perhaps the most improved player.

“He’s always been a big kid, but I don’t think he’s been as strong as he is. That’s a credit to Paul and his strength program,” Miller said. “He’s a much different player, banging in and around the basket — even with a guy like Kav and some of these young guys. He’s an overwhelmingly stronger player.”

“He’s always been in great shape, and he’s always been mobile. But you’re looking at a guy who in 12 months was able to get a lower body. Strength and conditioning is the backbone of our program. Looking at him and watching him play and compete, he’s a much better player right now.”
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Robinson, Other UD Freshmen, Ready to Make Impact (Doug Harris, DDN - October 17, 2012)
Jalen Robinson has spent time in the UD strength and conditioning program under coach Paul Ivkovich and has dropped to 235 pounds while lowering his body fat from 17 percent to 11.5.

“He used to say, ‘Coach, do you think I can be a 3?’ Now I hope he can be a 4,” Miller said. “But I do think because of his game, he has a chance to play with a ‘big’ or without a ‘big’ because he’s gifted inside and very, very mobile. He’s got a unique game that I think will translate well for him.”

Here are some early impressions of the newcomers:

Jalen Robinson: Relentless. Doesn’t back down from battles on the block. He wears dread locks like former Flyers London Warren and Rob Lowery, and his hair goes flying as he mixes it up inside.

Devon Scott (6-9, 215): The Flyers’ strongest player, at least in the weight-lifting department. He bench-pressed 185 pounds a team-high 21 times. Might be the most game-ready of all the freshmen.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Freshman Robinson Has Strong Scrimmage (Doug Harris, DDN - October 21, 2012)
What the Flyers will see is a solid performance from freshman forward Jalen Robinson, encouraging signs that senior forward Josh Benson is all the way back from knee surgery nine months ago and snippets of good ball movement that will make them hard to defend this season.

Robinson led all players with 10 points and had a rim-rattling dunk after taking a feed from freshman Khari Price down the lane. The 6-foot-9, 235-pound Columbus product figures to be in the mix from the start — especially with sophomore center Alex Gavrilovic out for at least two weeks with mononucleosis.

“He’s a load to deal with right now,” Miller said of Robinson. “He’s a big ol’ kid and I really like his skill set. He’s going to be inside, he’s going to be outside. The key for him will be his personal approach to defense. Young guys have to catch up quickly on the defensive side of the ball.”

“He’s got to go through some (defenders) who are older. But I love where he’s at, and I think he’s going to be a special player for us one day.”

Benson already is. He had nine points, two assists and a blocked shot and looks to be able to provide the interior presence on defense the Flyers lacked when he was out with a torn ACL for the second half of last season.

“I’m happy for Josh. … I think you can tell he’s almost there. He’s going two days on, one day off. At this point in time, we have to ease him in,” Miller said.

“It’s going to take some time to get some rust off, but he’s a huge component for who we want to be.”
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Has Been Good To UD Basketball (Doug Harris, DDN - October 24, 2012)
They’ve got a nice nucleus there with sophomore center Alex Gavrilovic and freshmen forwards Jalen Robinson and Devon Scott.

"Jalen had a great fall. He’s worked hard," Miller said. "He’s a great basketball player in terms of feel. You can just see the natural gifts he has with his length and his hands. I think he’s going to be a guy who scores for us at times."

"Devon is our most competitive guy, and I love what he brings to the table. He’s a guy I’m going to count on and we’re going to count on to bring some toughness, and he loves that role. That’s why I think those two guys were special for us to get because they kind of mix and match, and they’ll mix and match for a long time here."

Miller added: "I really love our team. I’ve loved how we’ve worked early on. I think our young guys really have a chance to impact us. They’ve all bought in."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In any event, the accelerated experience and development of Alex Gavrilovic, Jalen Robinson, and Devon Scott will pay dividends over the next four seasons.

It was nice to have Kavanaugh because then we had two pure banger type of big guys in the paint (Gavrilovic being the other).

However, Jalen Robinson, and Devon Scott are almost as strong down low. I thought that Jalen might be forcing Kavanaugh or Gavrilovic out of minutes after a short time anyhow (Because I believe he is a more rounded player with better skills and athletic ability).

With Benson looking so good at the R+B game last week, I assume he is going to get a lot of PF minutes.

Now, I see both Northland guys getting a lot of minutes.
I agree.

Re: 2012-2013 Dayton Flyers

Don't get dizzy spinning that hard, Muddy. In no way will this ever be a "blessing in disguise". Matt Kavanaugh would have been a solid contributor. He's a good player. Yes, the talent and depth is such that losing Kavanaugh isn't likely to be a season killer. But no matter how good the other big men are, Kavanaugh would have had a positive impact.

Including Kavanaugh, there is/was not a single player on the roster who would make the team demonstrably worse when he is/was on the floor. That's actually the first time we can say that in several years.

This is a very real bump in the road. Not a massive landslide that takes out the road, but a definite short term bump.
