Our frosh are pretty good, especially Jalen Robinson and Dyshawn Pierre. And this Vee Sanford transfer can play too. Those are three guys who I was unsure about before the season that are solid, steady offensive contributors now. I think the most critical is Robinson. We really needed some punch in the post. We needed that balance offensively.

I have growing confidence in this group. They are not dominant by any stretch of the imagination, but they are going to develop more than normal from beginning to end because most of them are so young or new to the team. I really want them to keep getting better defensively. I think they have the tools to do that. I feel they are being well coached too.

I have to think the defense will improve. This won't be a great defensive team, but they are capable of being good enough over 40 minutes, and potentially great in the final minutes. Oliver and Sanford have the size and quickness to shut down just about any wing or forward when a game comes down to a condensed final few possessions. They can go quick by putting in Price (who is far more advanced defensively than I expected) with Dillard, Oliver, Sanford and Benson and really clamp down on a high ball screen attack.

They aren't where they need to be, they aren't particularly close, but I don't see this as a poor defensive team. They'll be ok.

The offense has a chance to be dynamic. Benson and Sanford are better than they played today. Dillard will be Dillard. Throw in some real growth from Oliver and the early returns from Pierre and Robinson, and they potentially could have a "who do you guard?" offense. Like the defense, it's nowhere close yet, but even in the early stages this is a very potent attack.

Colorado Win Charleston Classic 81-74 (AP/Yahoo! - November 19, 2012)

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- Askia Booker had a career-high 23 points and Andre Roberson had 16 points and nine rebounds as Colorado won the Charleston Classic with an 81-74 victory over Murray State on Sunday night.

The Buffaloes (4-0) used an 11-1 run midway through the second half to break open a tie game and finish off their perfect trip South. Booker closed that run a 3-pointer and Colorado was ahead for good, 63-53 with 5:05 to go.

Murray State (3-1) was the last undefeated team in 2011-12, starting 23-0 on the way to a 31-2 record. The Racers got within five points several times down the stretch, including 79-74 on Isaiah Canaan's basket with 4 seconds left.

The Charleston Classic was a great experience for the many new Flyers and will provide a big boost to Dayton's S.O.S.

Dayton Coach Archie Miller Announces 2012 Fall Recruiting Class (Dayton Flyers - November 19, 2012)





University of Dayton men’s basketball coach Archie Miller has announced the signing of three top high school players to letters of intent. They are 6-foot-2 guard Kyle Davis, 6-foot-5 wing Kendall Pollard and 6-foot-2 Dayshon “Scoochie” Smith. Davis and Kendall are two of the top high school players out of Chicago this year, while Smith is one of the top point guards out of New York City in the class of 2013.

ARCHIE “We are very excited to add these three young men to the University of Dayton men's basketball program,” Miller said. “They will all thrive in what we think is one of the best "quality of life" environments that any major university can provide a student-athlete. They are a great fit for us, and we are a great fit for them. They really embody what we are striving for in our program. They will mix in nicely with our returning players, especially those we brought in last year.”


KYLE DAVIS

6-Foot-2 Guard, Chicago Morgan Park High School

Kyle Davis became the first recruit in the class of 2013 UD head coach Archie Miller when Davis committed in August. The 6-foot-2 left-handed combo guard averaged 25 points and seven assists for Hyde Park Academy last season. He was Chicago Sun-Times Third Team All-Chicago Public League as a junior. Davis will play for Morgan Park High School as a senior.

He selected Dayton after receiving offers from teams in the Big Ten, Big East, ACC and SEC. Both Rivals and Scout.com rate him a “four-star” recruit, and Rivals considers him the 105-th best player in the nation in the class of 2013.

KENDALL POLLARD

6-Foot-5 Forward, Chicago Simeon Career Academy

A member of the 2011 and 2012 Illinois 4A state champions at Simeon Career Academy and a teammate of Jabari Parker, the nation’s top-ranked player, Kendall Pollard is a three-star recruit who ESPN.com rates as the 35th-best small forward in the country.

Pollard has a nearly 7-foot wingspan, and one recruiting service called him “a workhorse who is highly active around the basket. He has good instincts on the glass and a nice shooting touch in the paint area, which explains why he shoots at a high percentage. In addition, he gets out on the break well and is a hard-nosed defender who doesn’t take plays off.”

Pollard averaged 9.0 points and 6.3 rebounds a game for Simeon last year.

DAYSHON “SCOOCHIE” SMITH

6-Foot-2 Guard, Putnam Science Academy

The second member of Archie Miller’s 2013 recruiting class to be ranked in the top 125 nationally is 6-foot-2 point guard Dayshon “Scoochie” Smith. A native of the Bronx, Smith is ranked the 121st prospect in the nation by Rivals. He transferred to Putnam Science Academy in Putnam, Ct. after his high school in New York City closed.

Smith averaged 17.2 points and 6.1 assists last season for PSA, while shooting better than 40% from three-point range. The signings of Davis and Smith give the Flyers their first two Top 125 recruits in the same class in school history.

Checking up on the Predictions:

I had Dayton beating Colorado and going 2-1 in the Charleston Classic.

WH had Dayton losing to Colorado and going 1-2 in the Charleston Classic.

WH has also predicted a Flyer's loss to 0-2 Manhattan at UD Arena on Saturday.

On November 16th, Manhattan was blown out by Harvard 79-45 in Cambridge, Mass.

Tomorrow night (Wednesday, November 21st), Manhattan hosts 3-2 Hofstra.

For the Flyer's final 9 non-conference games, WH and I have identical predictions.



Muddy's Observations:

(1) George Beamon is by far the Jaspers' best player.

(2) The Jaspers are a rubbish team without George Beamon.

(3) George Beamon missed the Jaspers' first two games due to an ankle injury.

(4) It is not yet known if George Beamon will play against Hofstra tomorrow night or against Dayton on Saturday.

Manhattan Star George Beamon Out For Louisville Game (SB Nation - November 11, 2012)

Manhattan star George Beamon, who averaged just under 20.0 ppg a season ago, will not play in today's game against Louisville because of an injury.

If Steve Masiello and the Manhattan Jaspers come into the KFC Yum Center and stun the second-ranked Louisville Cardinals on Sunday, they'll do so without the services of their best player.

Senior swigman George Beamon (19.0 ppg, 5.6 rpg) will not play in today's season-opener because of an ankle injury.

Beamon has led the Jaspers in scoring in each of the past two seasons, and led the entire Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in 2011-12. He was also second on the team in rebounding a year ago.

Suffice it to say, this is a major blow for Manhattan.

Flyers beat Manhattan 62-56, but struggled at the FT line (17 for 30) and were pressed and zoned almost the whole game. Hit 8 of the last 10 FTs to save the game and Manhattan FINALLY started to miss some. Didn't give up when Manhattan took a 1 pt lead late in the game. Dayton stepped it up and finally hit clutch shots. My nerves are shot, but I'll take an ugly win any day.
Dyshawn Pierre came in and energized the team. Oliver had 10 pts and 12 RBs.
