And with that dropping like a rock syndrome Dayton's exibiting, I can see why he decided to suddenly stop posting the RPI numbers. Granted, the RPI is pretty meaningless this early on, but it didn't stop him from posting when it reflected well on Dayton. Coincidence? Nah, cowardly is the more appropriate word.

I loved the play of Devon Scott and Khari Price however. Perhaps it was because the opponent was not good, but Price really played with confidence. When he is in the game, not only do we play noticeably better and more intense defense, but the ball moves more freely on offense. Price does not waste time holding the ball on the perimeter as some of our players do. And keep shooting Khari!

Scott might be our best interior defender and a strong rebounder. And, those are two attributes we are in desperate need of. Robinson is the more gifted scorer, but I don't think that means he deserves more minutes than D Scott, especially because our one veteran big - Benson - is also more of an offensive player than a defensive player.
Alabama is the first true litmus test for this team, at least in terms of knowing what you face before a game. First road game, quality opponent, and Dayton is coming off three straight less than stellar performances. We'll find out a lot about this team.

I concur with you on Price and Scott. Both were fantastic last night. Price has great footwork on defense, which is rare for a freshman guard. Offensively he's not a play maker, but he gets the ball moving and can knock down the spot up jumper. Now he just needs consistency in his play, coming hard off screens and understanding spacing so he can get more open looks.

Scott is a bull, but consistency of effort seems to be his issue. Last night he was all over the floor, any ball in the air was his. No matter the opponent, you don't get 10 rebounds in 17 minutes without supreme effort. His offense will be a work in progress for probably a couple of years, but if he brings that effort on a game by game basis he will settle into a key role for this year's team.

Devin Oliver continues to be everything this team needs him to be. He's really good defensively, his ball handling has improved, and the confidence in his offensive game is allowing him to be a weapon. He's shooting 52% from the floor and pushing 39% from three. Clearly his hard work, and Archie's guidance, is paying big dividends. He's playing All-A10 caliber ball right now.

Re: 2012-2013 Dayton Flyers

Just wondering if UD fans were expecting more then we've seen so far from Matt Derenbecker? It appears that when he was at LSU and just shortly before they entered conference play he was on the starting team. Thereafter, he had a number of games where he was in double figures and lead the team in scoring. I realize LSU was not a top 25 team then, but the SEC competition he faced had to approximate the talent level he'll see this year. I don't know if its rust from sitting out, but I thoght he would've bben more of a factor so far.

I think we were all expecting more, but people forget how bad that LSU team was. He had no competition for minutes. Right now he's battling for minutes with Oliver, Pierre, Price, and even Scott.

Oliver has been perhaps just a tiny bit shy of spectacular, Pierre and Price showed up ready to go from day 1, and Scott provides more inside.

The transfer year does different things to different people. It's entirely possible that he's just not very good, but he could just need more minutes to knock off rust. Those minutes aren't easy to come by right now.

I would stress patience with him. His story at UD wont be written solely on his first month of eligibility.

I think Adam is right that we all expected more from Matt. There is still time though. I am hopeful his shooting will win us a couple of games this year. It is entirely possible that this could start as soon as Wednesday, when we face a foe Matt is familiar with. Out of curiosity, I looked up what Matt did against Bama his first year at LSU:

70-46 Loss @ Alabama: 30 mins, 10 pts, 4-11 (2-7), 2 rbs, 2 stls.

67-56 Loss @ LSU: 27 mins, 3 pts, 1-4 (1-3), 3 rbs, 2 assists.

He obviously played decently in the first game, but what is most noticeable is what Adam pointed out above: LSU wasn't very good. A 70-46 shellacking indicates that there was not much talent on that team that Matt had to compete against.

Anyway, back in familiar territory, I am hopeful that our two Louisiana boys come to play against Bama.

Dillard Drives UD Past Alabama (Doug Harris, DDN - December 5, 2012)

Dillard Leads Dayton Past Alabama 81-76 (AP/Yahoo! - December 6, 2012)
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) -- Kevin Dillard scored 25 points and Josh Benson 19 to lead Dayton to an 81-76 victory over Alabama on Wednesday night.

It was the seventh straight win against SEC opponents for the Flyers (6-2), who improved to 19-8 in the past six seasons against teams from BCS conferences.

Dayton was in control most of the way, although the Crimson Tide came back from a double-digit deficit late in the game to make the score more respectable when Lacey made a 3-pointer as the clock was winding down.

Vee Sanford added 13 points for Dayton, while Dillard also had six assists, Benson six rebounds and Devin Oliver seven points and seven rebounds.

Ahead 3-2, Dayton scored 10 straight points on back-to-back 3-pointers by Benson and Dillard, a fast-break layup by Oliver and a dunk by Benson to jump out to a 13-2 lead at the 15:40 mark.

Alabama took its first lead of the game, 26-25, when Lacey made two free throws with 5:04 to go. The Flyers then outscored the Tide 13-7 to take a 38-33 lead at intermission.

Dayton maintained its lead throughout the second half. Alabama came within three, 47-44, on a dunk by Lacey at the 16:33 mark, but it was as close as they would get.

The Flyers steadily extended their lead to 70-55, their largest of the game, on a layup by Dillard with 5:38 remaining.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Good effort and good result for the Flyers at Alabama.

Re: 2012-2013 Dayton Flyers

That was fun. Dillard and Benson were phenomenal. Archie said in the pregame that he has been challenging Josh to bang more and shoot his midrange jumper less. Well, he did that and more. He took one jumper last night, but had at least 3 dunks that I remember (fouled on 2 of em), and scored all of his baskets around the rim.

Dillard is awesome. He just needs to stay motivated. He had an attitude last night and was talking a lot. It rubbed off on everyone. His defense was phenomenal as well. His jump shot has improved significantly over last year.

The rest of the team was good too. Oliver is a possible All-Conference player and is only going to get better. Pierre and Price really played well too. Price's defense is so good that he gets minutes, but you can see him gaining confidence with each game. Pierre has that "old man game" - he is a sneaky good passer and has a nice feel for the game. He diced the Bama zone at the foul line.

However, as everyone knows, we have seen this story before. I hope we can sustain it.

PS Xavierhoops and MudFlap, I think we play better on the road. Dare I say they even looked a little "looser" yesterday.

I'm having a bit of a love affair with Khari Price. I had no expectations for him coming into the season, but he is completely fearless. He sees an open shot and he just takes it, and there is a reason Archie trusts him with all the critical inbounds passes.

I think Dayton dodged a bullet with Anthony Grant already having a job when Gregory left. Grant's teams seem to be long on athleticism, but completely devoid of talent.

Perhaps, but it was still an impressive road win for the Flyers against a team that really needed the win:

No. 17 Cincinnati Beats Alabama 58-56 on Last Shot (AP/Yahoo! - December 1, 2012)
CINCINNATI (AP) -- Point guard Cashmere Wright had never made a buzzer-beater to win a game. Coach Mick Cronin had never seen one of his teams pull one off at the end.

No surprise, then, that both were a little stunned when the ball went in.

Wright's fadeaway jumper at the buzzer gave No. 17 Cincinnati a 58-56 victory over Alabama on Saturday in a matchup of stingy unbeaten teams. In the final seconds, Cincinnati was a bit better on defense.

I wasn't trying to say it wasn't a good win, any win on the road is a good win especially against a BCS opponent. More an observation on Grant, who could've possibly been a candidate for the UD job.

Good road win for Dayton and the A10. Dillard's motor runs a little to fast when pressed, but there is lots more to love about that motor.

He has improved his defense markedly since the beginning of the year. Dillard is not a good defender, so that is a big need for us. His size limits him in many ways though. He is a solid player, but it was apparent to me that you can't count on him against a Alabama type trapping team at this point. However, we need him a lot this year as a guy who can spell Dillard. He can do that well against most teams, IMO.

Re: 2012-2013 Dayton Flyers

Great win for Dayton on the road. Year in and year out Alabama teams look similar, but always very hard to snag a win in Tuscalosa.

Love these OOC wins away against BCS type schools

BTW, Coleman Coliseum is a pit. Talk about bad facility. Sure its big, but old, and feels even older. Only plus is troughs in mens room, making for no lines even under sold out circumstances.

Otherwise I love Tuscalosa and all things Dreamland

Great win Flyers!

I don't know that there is anything positive about troughs in the men's room. Partitions are your friend. Minimizes unintentional collateral damage for both your pants and your eyeballs.

I really like Khari Price. He has limitations, but he already knows what they are. He lets the game come to him, and he can shoot the ball. As he progresses through the years he will become a better creator and scorer, but right now he fits the role perfectly.
