Nevertheless, given the situation, I find it surprising that an outside shot from Oliver was the best they could deliver.

Oliver shooting from the outside clearly wasn't the plan. Vee was supposed to drive to the basket, but he never made it past the three point line before getting cut off entirely. They were still in a zone, and spacing wasn't very good. So the two players who moved to intercept him didn't really open up much else.

I don't think Vee passed it immediately to Oliver (can't remember, memory is a little fuzzy). One more pass and it ended up with Oliver, and driving would have been risky time wise. To those who thought Derenbecker should have been in, yeah, probably true. I'd rather him taking a contested shot than those other guys. I would have been happy to take my chances on Benson even though he didn't have a good game.

Khari Price is a player. He will beat XU in Cincy at some pt in his career. He is a smart player.

Count me in on the Khari Price fan club. I'm curious to see what happens next season when UD has a surplus of guards, though. My guess is that he plays around 20 minutes a game, with the freshmen taking the other 20.

UD's Dillard Out Indefinitely With Back Spasms (Doug Harris, DDN - December 20, 2012)

UD point guard Kevin Dillard may sit out a few games after back spasms forced him to leave the Flyers’ game vs. Illinois State on December 19th.

The Dayton Flyers called timeout to set up a final shot while trailing by a point against Illinois State on Wednesday, but the player who would have been their first option was in the trainer’s room getting treatment for a back injury.

Point guard Kevin Dillard stopped his dribble and grimaced in pain as he signaled to the bench for help with 4:19 left. He walked gingerly with trainer Nate Seymour up the ramp at UD Arena and never returned in the Flyers’ 74-73 loss.

The 6-foot, 180-pound senior, the team leader in scoring, assists and steals, didn’t practice Thursday and will rest his ailing back until being evaluated just before the Flyers take the court for warm-ups to face mighty Murray State on Saturday.

"He’s not feeling real well," UD coach Archie Miller said Thursday night. "I think it will be a long shot for him to play on Saturday. He’s dealing with a heavy dose of back spasms, and he has a hard time right now moving around."

"Anything from the back pretty much paralyzes you when it locks up. Your muscles go into spasm, and at that point, you can’t really move. It’s very, very painful. It’s going to take some time to address the situation."

Dillard looked to be hurt during a defensive possession before he asked out. But the injury could be from the multiple blows he’s taken this year with his fearless style of play.

"It’s probably more of a muscle thing or an alignment thing or taking some pounding," Miller said. "Any time you kind of get out of line, anything can spasm out on you. It could be a week. It could be two weeks. In the bigger picture, we don’t want anything to be lingering. We’re trying to be cautious right now."

Miller said freshman back-up Khari Price could have an expanded role, and shooting guard Vee Sanford also could slide to the point with small forwards Devin Oliver, Matt Derenbecker and Dyshawn Pierre moving to the 2 spot.

"We’ll go with who we have. We’ve done it all year when guys were down, and this is kind of another chink in the armor. Obviously, it’s a big chink. But we go with who we have and hopefully we can be better at executing some of the things we need to execute," Miller said.

It appears that the Flyers will have only two scholarshipped guards available for tomorrow's game.

Luckily it is only back spasms. I think it was Blackburn Review that floated a rumor that it was a herniated disk and he was done for the season. That would not have been good.

The Flyers catch a lot of flack from being a perenial NIT team and a team whose play degrades once the conference play begins. Some of the criticism is deserved, but there is also a bad luck element.

In 2007-2008 a Dayton Team with Brian Roberts and Chris Wright knocks off an eventual elite eight Louisville team on the road, beat a #6 ranked Pitt team, and then Chris Wright gets injured. The Flyers muddle through the conference, and finish with an RPI of 35 and just miss the NCAA tournament.

Last Year Josh Benson goes down, Dayton goes 9-7 in conference and Dayton ends up in the NIT.

This year, Kevin Dillard .....

Illinois State was very good. I felt they were the better team. We were fortunate to have a chance to steal that game at the end. We are weaker inside than I thought or hoped we would be.

Pierre is going to be a fine, fine player.

If it's just spasms, Dillard will likely be back in full by the time A10 play starts.

From growing up playing sports all year, and now being an avid golfer, I get back spasms about once per year. It basically keeps you in bed for a day or two, and then really sucks for a week. Hopefully it's the same for Dillard, only he has first rate S&C people to work him through it and I stumble my way through basic stretches on my own. He could well be ready to go by the USC game. Great time for an 8 day gap between games.

I really like Khari Price, and I don't think Archie will put too much on his plate. I imagine Vee Sanford will guard Canaan tomorrow for the most part, with Oliver getting time on him as well. Hopefully Murray State doesn't respect Khari's shooting and he can knock down a couple of open threes. No one can replace what Dillard does, but there are ways to be productive without him. Will need Vee to have his best game thus far as a Flyer, I would think. He's been passive at times, he needs to be the man tomorrow.

The issue as I see it is asking Price in particular, but also Sanford, Pierre, and Derenbecker probably getting more minutes and in the case of the last two, at positions they haven't had alot of time at. I wonder if UD will play alot of zone even periods of box and one?

That would be interesting to see. Price is a better on the ball defender than Dillard, I think, so I'd expect them to stick to man-to-man while he's in. Has Dayton played any zone this year? I don't think so, but I could be wrong. Considering how good Canaan is, I think our man-to-man options against him might be limited. Although I guess Oliver might be able to take care of him fairly well.

I don't think going zone against a team with an all-American point guard and several shooters is really what you want. I think the key is limiting Ed Daniel inside. Keep a body on him at all times and take away offensive rebounds. If Murray State is one and done all game, Dayton has a great chance to win.

Early in the second half of the Murray State game they had a two on one as Dillard couldn't get to the ball. Pierre trailed the play but appeared to stop when the Murray State player had a clear path to the basket. He missed the shot and the trailing MS player got the rebound and easy put-back. I believe Miller pulled Pierre, talked to him and sat him down. I don't remember him going back into the game. Did he ?

I wonder if UD will play alot of zone even periods of box and one?

I think the key is limiting Ed Daniel inside. Keep a body on him at all times and take away offensive rebounds. Pierre trailed the play but appeared to stop when the Murray State player had a clear path to the basket. He missed the shot and the trailing MS player got the rebound and easy put-back. I believe Miller pulled Pierre, talked to him and sat him down. I don't remember him going back into the game. Did he ?
