Time to put the other thread to bed...turn to next season. Article in DDN today about building around Dillard next season. He's coming off a 13.3 and 6.0 season and looks to be the number #1 or #2 (Chaz Williams being the other) PG in the league next year.

http://www.daytondailynews.com/dayt...o-build-around-dillard-next-year-1345668.html

“Kevin Dillard, with a great offseason, will be able to hold his own against any guard in the country next year,” Miller said.

And the Flyers, who exceeded expectations by going 20-13 and reaching the postseason for the fifth straight year, likely will be able to surround him with an even better supporting cast.

Center Matt Kavanaugh, though limited defensively, had a breakout junior season. He averaged 9.0 points and 5.9 rebounds and was the only player in the league in the top 10 in field-goal percentage (54.6) and foul shooting (80.7).

Sophomore wing Devin Oliver averaged 9.6 points and 7.4 rebounds in a seven-game stint as a starter at the end of the season. And junior forward Josh Benson, who suffered a season-ending knee injury Dec. 30, averaged 10.9 points and 5.2 boards before being sidelined and is expected to make a full recovery.

“Vee to me is the most talented, gifted scorer on our team,” Miller said. “One of the things I look forward to is Vee making plays for others and himself where Kevin isn’t involved with every play. ... Both Matt and Vee both bring us an added dimension in scoring.

The Flyers finished 9-7 in the A-10 even without Benson, ending up in a tie for fifth. In six previous seasons, they produced a winning league record just once, and their average finish in that span was seventh.

“I thought our kids did an amazing job being coachable,” Miller said. “And I think we did have a really good year. It could have gone in a lot of different directions at different times.

“When we lost Josh ... that was a make-or-break deal for our team. I give them credit for their character level, and I thought our staff did a nice job to continue to morph our team in different ways to be successful.”

Article on the three players with signed LOI for next year: Robinson, Scott, and Thomas.

http://m.daytondailynews.com/dayton/db_/contentdetail.htm?contentguid=MRCcdSRj&full=true#display

Thomas, a 5-foot-11 New York City native who plays at Quality Education Academy in North Carolina, has averaged 16 points and 12 assists per game while leading his team to a 22-6 record against top national competition.

Robinson and Scott are 6-foot-8 Columbus Northland teammates who have had snippets of their above-the-rim play posted on the Internet. Robinson was a finalist for the Ohio Mr. Basketball Award after averaging 19 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks, while Scott averaged 17.5 points and 11.5 boards."

IMO, the nice thing about all 3 is that none will have to start. All are backups this year that provide much needed depth to our woeful bench of this past season. All 3 should contribute though, especially one (not sure which yet) of the Northland players and Thomas who will backup Dillard.

I think Vee Sanford will make an immediate major impact. From everything I hear, the guy just gets buckets. There's a very real chance UD will have the best starting backcourt in the A10 next year. Derenbecker is a guy who doesn't do anything great, but is above average in many areas. A 6'7" SF that can hit the three is a matchup nightmare in the A10. I like having a true PG to back up Dillard, taking pressure off of him.

Devin Oliver grew so much as a player over the season. With a good summer, he can take another major leap forward. To me, he is the major key going into next year. If he puts the work in on his jumper and ball handling, this is a team that could have as many as 6 guys capable of scoring 20 in a given night. That is something UD hasn't had in a long time. They would be a scouting nightmare.

Knee injuries aren't all that scary anymore, so I'm not worried about Benson. He'll be ready to go. With him, Kavanaugh and Gavrilovic you return essentially 24 points and 14 boards a game inside, and add two good freshmen for depth. That's not even accounting for the possibility that one or both freshman are ready to contribute more than the typical freshman, or growth from the returning players.

I like the construction of the roster, and a player or two may still be added. The strengths are still to be determined beyond Dillard, but I don't see any glaring weaknesses. Way too early for specific predictions, but I feel good. Expectations should be to compete for an A10 title and make the NCAA. I think both are very doable.

The Columbus Dispatch All-Metro Team (Steve Blackledge, The Columbus Dispatch - March 24, 2012)

Members of the Dispatch All-Metro boys basketball team, from left:
co-Player of the Year Jalen Robinson, Northland;
Coach of the Year
Jerry Francis, Pickerington Central; co-Player of the Year Caris LeVert,
Pickerington Central; Isaac McGlone, Bloom Carroll; Jordan Potts,
Northland; and Mike Wells, Delaware.

"I see myself playing the three spot (small forward) at Dayton," said Robinson, "so I spent most of the offseason focusing on my foot speed, shooting, dribbling and mobility. That applies to guarding (small forwards), and having another big guy like Devon Scott as a teammate allowed me to play my natural position quite a bit."

A Mr. Basketball finalist, Robinson averaged 18.5 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocked shots for the Vikings, who were the champions in the Associated Press State Poll. He also shot 55 percent from the field.

"Jalen could have put up even more impressive stats if I hadn’t taken him out of a lot of blowouts,"
coach Sean Taylor said.

"What I liked most about Jalen’s season was that he was very consistent. We always knew what we were getting out of him. He could be a quiet assassin out there at times."

I have seen him [Matt Derenbecker] play in the red/blue scrimmage and I don't think he has the quicks to play the 2.

He can really stroke it and can take it to the hole.

My wife and I came away from the scrimmage commenting on how Derenbecker and Sanford were the best players on the floor.
TA111,

I have heard the same thing from a number of reputable sources (the same ones who said that Kevin Dillard was a better PG than Juwan Staten a year ago).

Archie will start his 5 best players if possible, who by all accounts appear to be:

Code:
[b]Player Class Pos. Height Weight Hometown

[/b]It is fortunate for the Flyers that the apparent 5 best players on next season's team play 5 different positions.

Derenbecker, Sanford, and Dillard can all hit perimeter shots and drive to the hoop.

On paper, next season's starting line-up looks to be an improvement over this season's starting line-up, and if Archie can sign a quality SG or two in the spring, depth at any position should not be an issue next season.

Sanford was very creative driving to the bucket and could hang in the air longer than his defenders, creating some easy lay-ins.

But I am not sure what kind of perimeter skills he may or may not have.

Vee Sanford (DaytonFlyers Profile)

Biography:

Sanford, a 6-foot-3 guard from Lexington, Ky., will have two seasons of eligibility remaining after sitting out the 2011-12 season due to NCAA transfer rules.

At Georgetown:

At Georgetown, Sanford played in 27 games in both his freshman and sophomore years. Averaging 6.6 minutes a game this past season, he averaged 2.4 points per game, and shot .522 (24-46) from the field, .600 (12-20) from three-point range, and 1.000 (6-6 from the line).

As a freshman, he averaged 1.2 points a game, but got to the line 17 times, making 14 freebies.

High School:

At Lexington Catholic High School, Sanford averaged 22.4 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 2.4 assists a game as a senior and was selected First Team All-Kentucky by the Louisville to The Courier-Journal. A McDonald's All-American nominee, he was ranked 30th nationally by Scout.com for point guards. Sanford completed his high school career by playing in the Kentucky/Indiana All-Stars Basketball Classic.

jdm, IF there is a transfer it will be Hill. I know he's not been happy (more like down in the dumps I should say) at times during the season based on his Twitter comments. IF he does transfer, that leaves 3 open schollie and I would expect a SG, a transfer (Siebert???) and for Archie to pocket the third. At this point, I don't think anyone knows.

#12 · (Edited)
Yeah, I would say Hill is 50/50 at best. Maybe more like 65/35 leaving, and I'm not sure it will be entirely his decision. Sometimes things just don't work out. The biggest impact he'll ever have at UD is on the APR, not the court. I've heard he really wants the engineering degree, so it wouldn't shock me if he just becomes a regular student or finds a D2 program at a school with a solid engineering department.

I definitely think we'll see a shooting guard added, be it a freshman or a JUCO. I'm guessing Isaiah Cousins is the top target, but he just got a ton of new offers, including UConn, so who knows where that stands. I know Archie is also in on Kedar Edwards and a kid out of Chicago, so there are options.

A transfer incoming to redshirt next year makes sense as well. The Sibert chatter is there, and also Trey Ziegler could be available after his dad was fired, so the transfer market could be active.

Time to put the other thread to bed ... turn to next season.
Indeed. Reposted from the 2011-12 Dayton Flyers thread:

Re: 2011-12 Dayton Flyers - Post # 377

Couple of thoughts...One, just to reiterate what ATF said about Dillard. You have a PG like that, you can hide some deficiencies and with the way he can control the game flow, you'll be in allot of games.

Two, about Benson. Who knows? His injury wasn't a devastating injury as far as knee injuries go. It wasn't close to being as bad as what Lowery's was in his junior year and he was really never the same. From what I gather, Benson is already back to riding a bike and doing drills. He probably only has to get over the mental aspect of it. Correct me if I'm wrong, but he only tore one ligament.

On the Big Frog...he's serviceable. The good news is this year, if he can't cut it, there are other options in Scott and Robinson.

Not sure what next year's team will ultimately do or where they will end up but I gotta think they will be predicted in the Top 4 of the league. There's allot of known quantities on next years team and give me a Dillard at the QB position all week long and I'll take my chances.

Free throw shooting...I'm not sure exactly why we were better this year. But we weren't just better then last year, we were light years better. Some of that is like ATF said, player subtraction/addition but I'm not sold that it was just that. One thing we didn't have this year is articles in the DDN and all over ESPN on our offseason workouts at Drakes Gym, either boxing or trying arm-bars on each other. I'd like to think that maybe, just maybe, we spent a little bit more time practicing basketball fundamentals rather then training for a date with Bones Jones.
Re: 2011-12 Dayton Flyers - Post # 382

I think Gavrilovic is a nice get for us at center. I was pleasantly suprised with him. I think he has much more defensive potential than Kavanaugh. He isn't bad offensively either. He has a nice half hook shot. Kavs and Gavs are similar players and were forced to play in some tough match-ups with Benson down. I expect to have more athletic options when the situation demands it next year.

I think Dillard gets better if he doesn't have to play conservative to stay in 90% of our pg minutes. That is where I have to hope that Jevon Thomas is worthy of playing that support role without a big drop off in being able to run the team.
Re: 2011-12 Dayton Flyers - Post # 383

I'll be shocked if Benson is ready to go by the start of next season.

I just don't see him being ready to get 25-30 minutes right from the get go.
We'll see...he also injured his knee a couple of weeks (maybe even a month) sooner then Lowery did a few years back...Benson did it in the game right before A10 play, Lowery during A10 play.

The situation next year isn't nearly as dire even if he's only 70-80% then what it was this past year. Oliver proved he's a capable 4 (9.3 and 7.3 in his last 8 games of the year), although I'd much prefer Benson in that role, allowing Oliver to play the 3 and 4. Scott and/or Robinson can play the 4 next year. Lots of options for Archie next year if so and so isn't ready to go. More options if someone has a Paul Williams like slump for 4-5 games.

Flyer75 and AdamtheRaider – please refer to Alex Gavrilovic as "Alex" or "AG", as "the Big Frog" is not a complimentary reference to a Dayton Flyers basketball player.

I would expect Xavier fans to refer to Alex as "the Big Frog", but expect better from Dayton Flyers fans.

In any event, references to Frogs should be limited to derogatory comments concerning St. Joseph’s basketball program, so as not to confuse Guster, an infrequent poster with a limited intellectual capacity.

Thank you very much.

Of the four centers listed above, only Alex Gavrilovic averaged more than 3.8 PPG and shot better than 48 % from the field as a freshman.

Gavrilovic averaged 4.0 PPG and made 54.9 % of his attempts from the field – a higher FG percentage than Kurt Huelsman ever had, and marginally better than Matt Kavanaugh’s 54.6 % FG percentage this season.

Based on what I have seen this season and the numbers above, I think Gavrilovic is an excellent get for us at center, and I'm looking forward to seeing him devlop and improve in the seasons ahead.

This incoming ud team is easily the most talented in the league next year. I cant wait for mk, kd, jb, ag, jr, ds, and the rest to dominate.

Archie is the best coach in the conference and one if the best in the country

2 losses at most in league play next year

What's interesting is that in the last eight years, Wright State and Dayton have the same amount of NCAA Tournament appearances...1. Perhaps some of the UD fans on this board should stop trying to compare themselves to Xavier and start comparing themselves a very similar mid-major program that is located just across town. UD's overall body of work this decade is far more comparable to WSU than it is to X.

Instead of trying to catch up to Xavier's level (which will take quite some time considering the massively differing track records), perhaps Dayton should first look at trying to catch up to Ohio University's level considering that the Bobcats have had significantly more recent success than the Flyers. Even Cleveland State has been more successful as of late.

In terms of Flyer fans comparing themselves to Xavier, it might be better to stick to more similar programs in the state: Ohio U, Cleveland State, Wright State, etc. The numbers don't lie...UD is far closer to those programs than they are to X.

Muddy, would you mind using your graphs and charts to compare UD's recruiting to the more similar Ohio programs instead of X. You'll look like far less of a douche in doing so.

Stop. UD and Wright State are not similar in any way. Wright State made the tourney because they won a league with one team as competition. 85% of their games are against horrible teams, and many years they struggle to win half of them. Same with Cleveland State. As good as Butler has been, occasionally they will get beat, because that's basketball. That's the only way other Horizon teams can sniff the dance.

If all Dayton had to do was beat a few MAC teams on a neutral floor to make the dance, or Horizon teams at UD Arena, they would have made several NCAAs over the past decade. Just stop with this nonsense. In your quest to have a bigger message board penis than someone else, you are disrespecting the A10. Winning 10 games in this league is harder than winning 14 in the MAC, or going unbeaten in the Horizon. Dayton's program, and the A10 in general, is on another level.

It's the so called Horizon or MAC level talent teams that UD has had trouble with... Just this year you have Buffalo, Rhode Island, Duquense, Miami etc. losses.

Dayton probably has a larger "profile" than the Wright St, Cleveland St, Ohio U programs of the world simply because they play in the A-10 as opposed to the MAC or Horizon. However, UD has frankly had less success than many of these teams in the NCAA tournament.

Why are you focusing on this year? UD has had little trouble beating MAC teams over the last decade. Going back as far as ESPN will let me, I have UD at 16-4 vs MAC teams, with a 5-3 record away from UD. All three of those losses are at Miami, a house of horrors Xavier fans know all about. When Dayton or X goes into Miami, the Redhawks tend to become a borderline top 25 team for 40 minutes. Charlie Coles was a wizard, winning home games and having more near road upsets than anyone in the game.

I didn't see a single loss to any Horizon league team.

Let's stop pretending Dayton struggles with that level of program. They beat them. Often. This year was the exception, not the rule.

There are many reasons to knock Dayton. Pretending they are MAC level is not one of them. Let's use our brains. It's much easier to make the tourney in those leagues than it is the A10. You only have to beat 3 other MAC teams. Not exactly daunting. In the A10 you either have to beat 3 A10 teams, which is tough, or position yourself better than many teams from BCS leagues, plus the MWC, MVC, CAA and WCC teams, which is tougher.

UD isn't a MAC level program, they have a higher profile because they play in the A-10 and generally a middle of the pack team in a decent league. They are a good mid-major program (Wright St, Cleveland St, Ohio U are also considered mid-majors). The argument that was made is the actual success UD has achieved is more similar to a Wright St, Cleveland St, Ohio U and many other A-10 schools than it is to Xavier.

But that's wrong. You are measured against your peers. I just showed you that UD and those programs are not peers. You can't compare NCAA records between different level programs, because the paths to the NCAA are so different. Like I said, if Dayton only had to beat MAC teams to make the tourney, they'd have a whole heck of a lot more NCAA success. MAC schools are compared with programs like Belmont, Davidson, Murray State and Cleveland State. Compare Dayton with A10, MVC, MWC and CAA programs. Anyone can win a game in March, your overall success is compared with peers who share similar paths to getting there.

Dayton is lacking in comparison to some of their peers. But they dwarf MAC and Horizon league programs not named Butler in every conceivable way.

Dayton < MAC and Horizon also rans!

Ha!

I think Dayton would compete favorably in the Horizon league. Not so much in the MAC. Sure, they may be a little better now, but not sure they'd get the same recruits if they were in the MAC or Horizon that they get now. It'd all even out. I think in the Horizon, they'd consistently be in the top half, but not commonly in the top 2. In the MAC, I don't think they'd compete long term given all the extraneous factors that would come with it.

What is the difference? Underachieving in the A-10 or the MAC or the Horizon still gets you a Preseason Championship banner ...
