Re: CBS Sports: VCU, George Mason, Butler in discussions to join Atlantic 10
They're crazy if they think Richmond or GW will move to the CAA. But Charlotte is not out of the question at all. If D1 football doesn't take them, where do they go? My guess is the CAA. I myself would prefer Coastal Carolina, College of Charleston, or Murray State though...

I'm guessing this article is the source of the GW to CAA chatter. I applaud their attempt at saving themselves from irrelevance.

Okay, I just read through the thread over at the CAAzone. Parts of it seemed like they came straight from "The Onion."
There were two posters suggesting Richmond would join the CAA. One of the two thought they could get Richmond and Villanova. Either a troll of the "FlyersAndTea4Life" variety or one of the most delusional posts I've ever seen on a message board. |

ECU's chancellor made it a point in their State of the University address today that they want regional rivals in their "pod" and said he hoped to get Charlotte and App State.
ECU's leaders have played a big role in guiding the Alliance, so I imagine if they're pushing for us, we'll likely get an invite. |

Yeah. I'm on CAAZone a lot when it comes to conference realignment issues...since UMass is now gone from CAA Football, it's less time spent.
But it is a bit tough at times when you see some of the schools many think they can get. Many seems to think that upon losing GA St., VCU and GMU, that the conference is still attractive enough to entice Charlotte (already rejected CAA when told no to football-only, they'd have to bring all sports)...and College of Charleston (already rejected CAA twice, as recent as 2005), Richmond (left CAA for A10 and got at-large bids due to it), GW (in a multi-bid conference already, not going to downgrade).

Bulter is fine, they pay their head coach 750k, we don't need to pay their exit fee. We are not the Big East trying to hang on to AQ status and BCS football. We have 13 teams without adding anyone. There is a list of teams that want in. Butler is in a one bid league and did not even get a NIT invite. Don't buy we need to pay Butler fees, they can afford to pay their head coach well. Then they can afford to pay the rest of their bills.

You're spot on with your post. It seems that everyone just assumes that Butler will translate the results it enjoyed in a crappy HL to the same/near level of performance in the A10. That isn't necessarily a given. It's not a given that Butler can improve its recruiting to a level that's needed for A10, especially based on the ridiculous notion held by some of their fans that they run a lilly white program; choir boys that know how to play together. Importantly, don't be overly enamored with their two F4 runs. Congrats to them and good for them, but now both are in the history books, and Butler didn't even make it to the Tournament this year. Butler needs to truly prove they have a sustainable program. They haven't yet put together the $25 million to renovate Hinkle, which is in need of a renovation. Their plans for that call for a capacity reduction to 8,500. They have attendance and ticket price pressures already. Butler makes sense now, with Stephens there and because of the glow of their recent Tournament success, but, as programs go - the financial and business aspect of a program, not resume - Butler would rank in the middle of the pack, at best, in the A10. They should have to pay their way in like everyone else did. Then they have some more investing to do. |

The Big 12 paid off the Big East for WVU, the Big East paid off the A10 for Temple, so who cares if the A10 pays off the HL for Butler?

Even brining up ODU is the same breath as Butler is a little ridiculous in my opinion. |
