Re: What Have You Done For The A10 Lately?
The NIT deservedly gets no respect. You have to play your way into the Dance. You go to the NIT if you play your way out of the Dance. Everyone knows the parameters to get in, then you have to DO it. UD's effort in the NIT was pathetic. They didn't want to be there and it showed.

Re: What Have You Done For The A10 Lately?
Enhanced its reputation. FLYER STUDENT-ATHLETES PART OF RECORD-BREAKING CLASS (University of Dayton - May 6, 2012) The University of Dayton held its undergraduate commencement this Sunday, May 6 in UD Arena. Nearly 2,000 students participated in commencement exercises and 75 degrees were conferred upon Flyer student-athletes. Combined with degrees granted earlier this academic year in August and December, about 2,900 Flyers will earn degrees, a record for one academic year. Dayton has had unprecedented success during the tenure of this senior class; both academically and athletically. Some of the athletic accomplishments of this senior class include: - 17 NCAA Tournament appearancesThe academic numbers are just as impressive: - Dayton is among the nation’s best in graduating its student-athletes. UD’s 95 GSR in this year’s report places the University tied for 21st in the nation and tied for first in the Atlantic 10.On top of those accomplishments, these student-athletes have also done thousands of hours of community service in the Dayton area.

Please tell me that Muddy and I aren't the only people on this board who are concerned about the academic quality of the student athletes of the A-10.

I'm wondering when the DUKE vs. UD home and home series will begin? That exclusive club must be good for something. Nevermind, UD was a BUY game for Duke. That greatly enhanced the league's reputation.

Re: What Have You Done For The A10 Lately?
I care about academic quality as well, and no one has ever questioned UD as an academic institution. Clearly, they are a pretty impressive academic institution and invest heavily in their student-athletes (as many A-10 schools do).
Unfortunately that is not "enhancing the A-10's reputation" as Muddy likes to think. The A-10 is an athletic conference, not an academic quiz bowl conference. The marquee and by far the most notable sport in the A-10 is men's basketball. Out of the 50 athletic accomplishments Muddy listed, only 1 was achieved by the marquee and most publicized sport of men's basketball. Being part of an elusive club regarding GSR's (while a nice accomplishment) certainly does not enhance the reputation of the A-10 as much as your marquee program being put on probation by the NCAA hurts the reputation. |

Re: What Have You Done For The A10 Lately?
Interesting work...I still think the NIT should not be recognized UNLESS the A-10 team (like Dayton did) wins it. NIT bids I think are a negative on the league.

Re: What Have You Done For The A10 Lately?
I'd rather have my team lose in the first round of the NCAA than win the NIT, but its a bit overstating to call it a negative for the league. Its still national recognition that your team is good.

And it makes the league look a little better if, say, half the conference in in some post season tournament. It makes those in the NCAA look like they weren't just beating on scrubs the whole time.

Re: What Have You Done For The A10 Lately?
Since you don't get to decide... if your team is in the NIT they are there to win it! If your team gets to the NCAA you are also there to win it! When you win a couple of NIT titles in a row let me know, then maybe we can debate it!

Re: What Have You Done For The A10 Lately?
The NIT is a personal experience. It matters to you and you only. How you value that success is up to you.
But, no one else is paying attention. Other eyeballs are inherently the definition of "what have you done for the A10 lately". If no one outside your small bubble notices, are you really doing anything for the league as a whole? Nope.

The truth is, not a single coach of a credible program wants anything to do with the NIT. It's OK if you attach value to your team being in the NIT and having success. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. But, this is a discussion about rating contributions to the greater good. Fact of the matter is, nothing that happens in the NIT adds true value to the league.
