Why did he only have one other offer?

You would have to ask the coaches recruiting him that.

I'm betting that being an undersized guard/tweener at 6'1 as a SG probably gave high majors pause as far as not having a defined position at the next level. It's also pretty early since the July evaluation period hasn't started yet and a lot of programs wait until then to offer. He was also pretty inconsistent early on in the season before coming on in the latter half of the year.

If he can play (which the recruiting gurus say he can), I'm happy to have him. More importantly, Shaka Smart thinks he can play for VCU, and he's a pretty good judge of talent given what we've seen from his recruiting classes so far.

I dont think his size has much to do with lack of offers. Maybe from majors, but not overall. There are average recruits with multiple offers from schools like Robert Morris, Northern Illinois, William & Mary, BU, Delaware, James Madison, Towson, Fairfield, Holy Cross, etc. I just think it's strange that a guy with only two offers listed doesn't have mid-major and low-major offers listed too. Especially since there are so many schools in the mid atlantic near DC/MD/VA. I've never heard of Lyles, so I didn't follow his recruitment at all. Maybe he had those offers listed previously.

Possibly. Tough to say unless you're privy to his recruitment what the deal was with the offers. At the end of the day, it's not that important if the kid can play.

Lyles Pops for VCU:
Another big commitment came a day or two before Sina’s when DeMatha guard Jairus Lyles popped for VCU and Shaka Smart. Lyles impressed us multiple times last season as a high major scoring guard with big play potential. Lyles’ commitment is just a shot across the bow of anyone who thought Smart and VCU were somehow going to slow their roll as they enter the A-10 a year ahead of schedule. The Rams will compete and contend from day one in the new league. They bring back a ton from last year’s successful squad, and adding Lyles, a top-100 kid in his class, shows that VCU intends to build on the plethora of talent they already have at their disposal.

It often depends on two things: a) what he's telling coaches about his potential to choose them (they often withdraw or don't extend offers when it becomes clear there's no chance at all he'll commit there). Most kids decide not to say that in case plan A falls through, but some guys just don't want to bother with as many phone calls. and b) what the recruit tells the services about that choice. They usually don't list schools that the player has no interest in.

Charlotte's signee Willie Clayton had a raft of offers listed from schools like Florida, Florida St., Alabama, Indiana, Georgia, etc., early on. But Clayton basically told everyone Mercer and Charlotte were his two choices, so his final list looked like he chose Charlotte over Mercer and that's it. Some of those schools may have rescinded the offers due to his development (though he continued to be successful), but it was also clear he wasn't interested so that probably had something to do with it as well.
