Re: 2012-2013 Xavier Musketeers
He has been practicing so he will be up to speed if they give him the ok, but let's not kid ourselves. Cantino is a warm body at best to soak up some minutes and let the real players get a little rest.

Re: 2012-2013 Xavier Musketeers
Yup, there is really no point in caring about Cantino's status at this point (even though I agree the NCAA is terrible when it comes to stuff like this). From what I saw and Musketeer Madness and what I have heard from some people closer to the program, Cantino is a 5 mpg player at best, even with our complete lack of depth. He just plain and simple is not anything special as a player and probably just a desperation attempt to find something in the wake of the Dez issue.

Re: 2012-2013 Xavier Musketeers
Xavier 74, Kentucky State 53 (Official Box Score - November 3, 2012) Notes From XU Mens Exhibition Win (Shannon Russell, Cincinnati Enquirer - November 3, 2012) CANTINO NOTE: XU planned to have Chris Cantino on the bench (unable to play, though, because of his eligibility limbo) but found out at the last minute NCAA rules dont permit it. While he was not on the bench, Cantino was still at Cintas Center watching the game. Nothing has changed with his status. Hes still awaiting word from the NCAA.

Re: 2012-2013 Xavier Musketeers
Muddy's Observations: (1) Walk-on starter Eric Stenger led the Musketeers in scoring with 12 points (5-7 FGs) and in rebounding with 9 boards. (2) In 50 years of watching college basketball, I have never seen a walk-on lead a team in either scoring or in rebounding. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Erik Stenger Profile (Xavier University) 6'-7", 207-lb. Erik Stenger AS A SOPHOMORE AT NKU IN 2010-11: Played in 28 games, starting 20 times for head coach Dave Bezold...scored in double figures in eight games, including a career-high 15 at Indianapolis on Feb. 17...grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds vs. Missouri-St. Louis...NKU was 21-9 last season. AS A FRESHMAN AT NKU IN 2009-10: Saw action in 30 games...averaged 2.1 points and 1.9 rebounds per game...scored 10 points in a victory against Christian Brothers in the championship game of the John L. Griffin/Lions Club Classic on Nov. 21...was named the John L. Griffin Hustle Award recipient for that tournament...NKU was 17-13 in 2009-10.

Re: 2012-2013 Xavier Musketeers
Another interpretation of this rare (if not unprecedented) statistic is that Chris Mack's scholarshipped forwards are not as good as his non-scholarshipped forward, which is not good news for Xavier.

Re: 2012-2013 Xavier Musketeers
Maybe YOU missed the point of my sarcasm this time. The reason for my post was to point out that your innuendo laced posts are not the ONLY way information can be taken. You are so arrogant that you think your deductions are the only ones that could possibly be true.
Secondly, I don't give a rat's ass if a walk on is better than a scholarship player--as long as he can play. Stenger certainly had a great game against inferior competition, so I'm not arguing he WILL be this good. IF he is is this good and averages 10 and 6 (don't think he will, just a hypothetical), I don't care if he's a walk on or scholarship player. |

Re: 2012-2013 Xavier Musketeers
I can't beleive I am going to jump in and discuss this, but caught my eye. Fairly certain Scotty Pipen walked onto Central Arkansas, he turned out to be OK. Almost positive Jeff Hornacek was a walk on at Iowa State. Pretty certain he led them in scoring a ton. I am sure there are others.
Not comparing Stenger, by any stretch to anybody, but to say in 50 years never seen a walk on as leading scorer or rebounder for a team is a pretty big stretch. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Erik Stenger Profile (Xavier University) |

Re: 2012-2013 Xavier Musketeers
My apology to all if this has already been posted by someone on Muddy's Ignore List: XU Worried About Getting Better (Shannon Russell, Cincinnati Enquirer - November 5, 2012) Xavier is still awaiting an NCAA ruling on Chris Cantino. Hes stuck in eligibility limbo due to an issue at his junior college. So when Xavier takes the court Friday for its season opener against Fairleigh Dickinson at Cintas Center, itll have a top returning scorer (Travis Taylor) averaging just 4.5 points and two freshmen (Semaj Christon and James Farr) facing immediate initiations into Division I college hoops.

Re: 2012-2013 Xavier Musketeers
I appreciate that Shannon has to write an article everyday during season, and there is not always "news". But an article saying Xavier is working on getting better and not worrying about the offseason. There almost has to be something more newsworthy to write about.

Re: 2012-2013 Xavier Musketeers
I don't think it matters much if Cantino is going to play a key role or even an almost non-existant role, there is something seriously wrong w/ the NCAA clearhinghouse process if they haven't decided if he's eligible or not by now.
Who cares if a walkon lead X in scoring and/or rebounding during an exhibition game. Since he came over from NKU, I'll assume he has more talent than the typical walkon, and considering the competition, is it that big of a deal? Muddy, you'll do yourself favors by not forcing a story where there is no story to be found. Don't know about Hornecheck, but I'm not even sure if Pippen was a walkon or not. IIRC, as the story goes, Pippen's college coach also coached his older brother and remembered that his older brother had a serious growth spurt during his time in college, so agree to allow Pippen to come in as either a manager (or perhaps walkon). Pippen then went on to grow like 6 or 7 inches in college and turned himself from a too slow, poor ball handling PG to a fast enough, athletic enough, smart enough SF. Ted Fitz may or may not have lead UD in scoring and/or rebounding at some point in a game that counted at one point. Granted he was a different kind of walk-on seeing that he got free tuition regardless due to his uncle Brother Fitz running the university at the time (I'll assume since Brothers are not allowed to be married/have kids that UD's rule of free tuition for children of employees extended to his neices/nephews) Keither Walleskowski (sp?) was definently a walk-on at one point (w/ a promise of a scholarship after a 1 year redshirt) and most definently lead the team in scoring and/or rebounding at several points during his career. |
