Set that bar low and keep the chin high.

Re: 2012-2013 Xavier Musketeers
The key for Christon was hitting a couple of 17 footers, especially the one early in the second half. When he does that, defenders have to step out on him and he gets the leverage. They got virtually nothing from Taylor and Philmore. Robinson started in float around the 3 point line mode, but eventually sat inside and let Semaj find him for easy buckets.
No question, though. He put the team on his back today. Xavier probably loses by double figures if he has an average game. I don't know that I would say he played great defense, though. Drexel shot over 50%, and both guards had good offense games. That's tough to do if ballhandlers aren't getting good shots and getting the ball exactly where they want it to go within the offense. Xavier went zone for much of the last 30 minutes or so because they couldn't disrupt Drexel's base offense. I feel for Drexel. With a slow start and their best player out for the year, their record will not be indicative of the quality of team they really are. Pacific has had a nice couple of days, but they aren't a good team. Xavier bounced back well, Drexel is head and shoulders a better team than Pacific. They have 25 win talent and they will struggle to get to 20 wins now.

Re: 2012-2013 Xavier Musketeers
Virtually nothing? We didn't get ANYTHING from Philmore. I know it's only his second game... but wow. Slow, unathletic, no rebounding, chucking up 3's?? I expected much, much more from him especially given he had a year to practice with the team and learn Xavier's system. Maybe he'll come around because it'd be nice to have a 3rd guy down low along with Robinson and Taylor.
Unbelievable performance by Semaj... 4th college game. He's going to be a beast for the next 2 (hopefully 3) years.

Re: 2012-2013 Xavier Musketeers
Semaj is easily the most talented freshman I've seen at Xavier. He can finish in the lane with his size. He makes tough shots look easy. He understands the game and finds teammates in great positions to score.

Re: 2012-2013 Xavier Musketeers
I have not seen X play that much this year, but can Semaj hit 3 pointers? I see he has only attempted 4 this year, and not made any. I have no doubt the guy is a good player, but that is something that a guard needs to be able to do.

Re: 2012-2013 Xavier Musketeers
Yeah, Semaj isn't a pure shooter by any means. He missed the first game due to an elbow infection on his shooting arm, and I think that has affected his outside shot some. I think he will shoot 32-35% from three by year's end, which isn't great, but will still keep defenses honest.

Re: 2012-2013 Xavier Musketeers
Criston was amazing. He really does have a great feel for the game and he attacks and finishes around the basket like he's an upperclassman. Some of his scores on penetration were difficult, but he made it look easy.
I have to see more, but he just might be the best guard to enter the league since Jameer Nelson. Be interesting to see what happens when teams start to back off him and dare him to shoot. If Criston is really that good, then Xavier will be much better than I expected. A big concern of mine was the lack of a player to win games for the team in the closing minutes. Every good team needs one, and Criston might just be that player. |
