Three out of four Xavier freshman are on campus now. Semaj Christon, James Farr and Jalen Reynolds have all moved in. The fourth, Myles Davis is expected to arrive shortly as well.

The word is all four will be good to go this coming year.

Also, when the freshman arrive, they get measurements taken.

Semaj was measured at 6'3

James Farr was measured at 6'10" and 230lbs.

Jalen Reynolds was measured at 6'9.5" with a wingspan of 7'5"!!!

At what level? Yes, at X, I'm sure he'll see time at the center position. If he develops and ends up in the NBA some day, it will be as a power forward.

His natural position is a PF with the ability to step outside and knock down jump shots, like Andrew Nicholson.

#6 ·
We had a guy a couple of years ago in Larry Sanders who was 6'10.5" with a 7'5.5" wingspan. He left after 3 years and was drafted 15th overall in 2010 despite not exactly setting the world on fire his last season.

That kind of length will have Reynolds as a pro prospect if he can play even a little bit.

Re: Who are the top coaches in the A10? - Post # 47

He's right up there with Brad and Shaka.
How many of Mack's own guys were contributing?

He seems to get the big name classes, but the guys who did most of the scoring this year weren't his recruits, right?

I am not sold on Mack being in the highest echelon.

Recent results should count, but Mack will, for me, be made by his next three years rather than his first three years.
Indeed.

It is no secret that Xavier's unquestionable success over the past three years was largely attributable to Jordan Crawford, Tu Holloway, and Mark Lyons (and to a lesser extent, Kenny Frease) - all of whom were signed by Sean Miller.

Brad Redford is now the only remaining Muskie signed by Sean Miller.

Chris Mack's first recruit was senior Splinters Robinson.

Coach Chris Mack And His Staff Secure A Top 20 Recruiting Class (Xavier University - Nov. 11, 2009)

CINCINNATI --- Xavier University head basketball coach Chris Mack announced today that he has received four signed national letters of intent from young men who will be a part of the Xavier team beginning with the 2010-11 season, an impressive list of signees which earned Xavier a Top 20 Recruiting Class ranking by rivals.com and many other experts.

The signees include Jay Canty, a 6-5, 185-pound guard/forward from Oak Ridge (NC) Military Academy; Jordan Latham, a 6-8, 220-pound forward from City College High School in Baltimore, Md.; Justin Martin, a 6-7, 200-pound forward from Mountain State Academy in Beckley, W.Va.; Griffin McKenzie, a 6-9, 220-pound forward from Cincinnati’s Moeller High School.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When the freshman arrive, they get measurements taken.

James Farr was measured at 6'10" and 230 lbs.
The poor lad shrunk:

James Farr (Rivals.com Profile - Updated April 2011)

Height: 6'8", Weight: 200 lbs. (BTW, nice "Offer" list.)

James Farr (Official Xavier Profile - Updated July 2012)

Height: 6'9", Weight: 222 lbs.

Muddy, hasn't Shaka Smart and Chris Mack been head coaches at their respective schools for the exact same amount of time? (3 years) So if Mack isn't gonna get credit for 3 NCAA tourney bids, 2 A-10 championships and 2 Sweet 16's in 3 years, then clearly Shaka Smart can't get credit for the Final 4?

Indeed.

At least with Mud being back, all of our entertainment is back on this board.

Muddy and logic don't mix too well. I think all that "Xavier envy" gets in the way of clear thinking.

I’m have a bit of difficulty figuring out Xavier’s Depth Chart for the 2012-13 season.

For the sake of discussion, perhaps some of you Musketeers might post your own thoughts about this.

Possible Depth Chart (Position: starter, first off the bench at each position.)

C: Jeff Robinson, Jalen Reynolds, and James Farr.

PF: Isaiah Philmore, Travis Taylor, and James Farr.

SF: Justin Martin, Dezmine Wells, and Travis Taylor.

SG: Dezmine Wells, Brad Redford, and Myles Davis.

PG: Semaj Chrison, Dee Davis.

Muddy’s Observations:

(1) Idealy, Wells would start at SF because of his great athleticism and proven ability to rebound (which Xavier really needs up front), but that would leave Redford as the starting SG, and I think that a starting line-up with Martin and Wells is stronger than a starting line-up with Wells and Redford.

(2) I expect that Wells will play both wing positions in most games and lead the Musketeers in minutes played and scoring.

(3) From what I have read about Philmore, he appears to have the edge over Taylor.

(4) If Christon is not better than Davis, the Muskies are in big trouble.

(5) Based on Farr’s performances at Maine Central Institute (low scorer; stats unknown) and in the Deveroes League (about 6 ppg), I don’t see him getting much court time this season other than mop-up minutes, unless another Xavier big man is injured (which hopefully will not happen).

(6) Dez Wells certainly has All Atlantic 10 Team potential, but it hard to see where the scoring and rebounding against better opponents will come from after the departures of Tu Holloway, Mark Lyons, Kenny Frease, and Andre Walker.

(7) On paper, this season’s team looks thinner than any Musketeers’ Roster in recent memory.

Among other things, the retention of Mark Lyons would have given Xavier a legitmate 3-point thread (spreading the defense) and would have allowed Dez Wells to start at his natural position, SF.

Coach Mack may decide to go with both Travis Taylor and Isaiah Philmore.

Given that Jeff Robinson's natural position is PF, and Dez Wells' natural position is SF, Mack would essentially be starting three Power Forwards, a drive-to-the-hoop Small Forward, and a drive-to-the-hoop freshman Point Guard.

That is certainly an interesting concept, but no head coach in his right mind would do so unless he had no other choice.

Yeah, but Jalen Reynolds spent last season on the bench at Brewster Academy, so he didn't get much game experience during his year at prep school in Hew Hampshire.

Consequently, I was forced to picked ol' Splinters as Xavier's starting center this season.

Also, Robinson and Reynolds are a lot better than Farr.

Why do you morons always badmouth the Summer League and then quote stats from it? Farr did fine in the Summer League doing exactly what we want from him - REBOUNDS- about 15-16 a game sometimes. Oh, you forgot to mention that? I look for Semaj to be named the MVP or close to it. It was fun, play time for the the X guys. Dez just toyed with people knowing nobody could stop him, even with just getting back to work after the foot injury in the, you know, Sweet 16. Oh, take back that last part. You don't know.

I wouldn't be shocked if Xavier went with something like this...

PG - Christon, Davis
SG - Wells, Redford, M. Davis
SF - Philmore, Martin
PF - Taylor, Philmore, Reynolds, Farr
C - Robinson, Reynolds, Farr

...at least to start the year. They will be playing a ridiculous schedule, and I think experience will trump all out of the gate. Martin and Reynolds may play their way into the starting lineup down the line, but we'll see.

Dez Wells is a shooting guard, and for Xavier to be at their best he will have to play shooting guard. The only other options are Martin (spotty to date, to be polite), Redford (can't play 25-30 a night), or the freshman Davis.

I think Xavier ends up being a lot like the UD teams we've see the last few years. A starting 5 that can hang with anyone in the country, but a bench that is hard to count on night in and night out. They'll have games where it all clicks, but depth will be an issue.

I think Philmore is the most important player on their roster heading into the season. He must not have the same "step up a level and see the game shrink" year that Travis Taylor had. He needs a Kevin Dillard first year back. If not, Xavier may only have one reliable, consistent scorer, and it makes Christon the #2 key for opponents. You look at last year and Wells was the #4 key for opponents. There are but a handful of freshman capable of being the #1 or #2 option on a team at this level or above on a yearly basis, and 3 of them will always play for Kentucky. Those aren't good odds.

Neither would I, but I didn't choose this because it doesn't have a single 3-point threat in the starting line-up.

Opponents would just pack in the middle, close the driving and passing lanes, and force Xavier to take long jump shots.

When a player transfers from a "lower" conference to a "higher" conference (such as the Atlantic 10), his stats usually take a nosedive as he faces higher-quality defenders. To wit:

Semaj could play anywhere in the country.

He was a 5* by Scout, #2 or 3 PG in the class. Same with Rivals, although not quite 5*.

From all reports, he could be the most talented freshman Xavier has ever had.

Xavier is going to be better than people think. Don't sleep on Dee Davis either. He's had a spectacular summer as far as workouts.

Xavier's young bigs will contribute. Jalen Reynolds will be a high energy guy as a freshman who will rebound, block shots and dunk on people. Farr is going to help out on the boards. He was measured at 6'10" and 240 lbs. He looks it too from what I have seen of him this summer.

The guys that have to play well will be Robinson, Philmore and Taylor though.

On a side note, I saw video of Stainbrook in the summer league and boy has he lost a lot weight. He was moving really well and has a great feel for the game. He is down to 270lbs and didn't look too much bigger than Kavanaugh weight wise.

This quote was taken from a UC poster on BearcatNews, not a Xavier fan.

Other notes: incoming X guys look really good. Lots of nimble size between Farr and Reynolds, lots of athleticism from Semaj Christon, and Myles Davis canned a couple of NBA threes with ease. And Dez Wells looks fantastic. Future X player Matt Stainbrook (sitting out this year) has lost a ton of weight and flashed great offensive post game (and hands) in outplaying his X teammates Farr and Reynolds. I suspect UC fans will hate this guy, but end up begrudgingly respecting him. He played really hard, kept his mouth shut, and was absolutely the difference in the game. Wouldn't surprise me to see Mack start an all-freshman backcourt this year (Christon and Myles Davis). This year's Crosstown Bowdown or whatever may feature the most raw athleticism we've ever seen in the game.

Dez Wells 38% from 3

Philmore. 36% from 3

Semaj, should at least be close to TU's 34%

Bench

Redford, commonly regarded on of nations best shooters

M. Davis, considered on of co 2012's premier shooters

J. Martin, 3 point threat

Im not too worried, but I'm sure this will be the 'downfall' of Xavier.

Just like every year X has fallen apart since the graduation of David West ( which that teams depth was it great downfall).

Dez Wells 38% from 3 ==> 1.7 attempts per game; 0.6 made per game

Philmore. 36% from 3 ==> 1.7 attempts per game; 0.6 made per game

Semaj, should at least be close to TU's 34% ==> Pure unsubstantiated speculation !

Bench

Redford, commonly regarded on of nations best shooters ==> 34.1 %

M. Davis, considered on of co 2012's premier shooters ==> By who ?

J. Martin, 3 point threat ==> 31.7 % (1.3 attempts per game; 0.4 made per game)
A player has to attempt at least 3.5 three-point shots per game in order to be considered a legitimate 'threat'.

Last season, Mark Lyons attempted 4.4 treys per game and Tu Holloway attempted 3.8 treys per game, and were Xavier's only legitimate 3-point threats. Redford and Martin didn't play enough to count as legitimate 3-point 'threats' last season.

Three-point attempts per game for the 2011-12 Dayton Flyers:

Chris Johnson: 5.4
Josh Parker: 4.6
Paul Williams: 4.3
Kevin Dillard: 3.6
Luke Fabrizius: 3.5

In any event, congratulations to the Deer Park Musketeers on their Deveroes League Championship!

In a 36-minute Championship game featuring no defense and no made 3-points attempts by any Xavier players, Deer Park defeated Mansoor 101 to 98 in a meaningless game yesterday afternoon which featured one uncontested layup after another.

Can't believe Muddy actually went to the Deveroes game yesterday. I'm sorry I missed him. That was the only game I went to all summer. It was quite entertaining and my kids loved it. Muddy, of course, lies again about Deer Park not making any 3's but that's his "schtick" I guess. He also lied about the "uncontested" layups but this board already knows he is a proven LIAR.

Back to the game for a minute. IF Semaj can learn the plays and defend, which I see no reason he can't, this kid is going to be special. He is lighting quick and can get anywhere on the court he wants to go. Had some nice floaters in the lane that I haven't seen since Lavender and also some impressive dunks. Toward the end of the game the other team was doubling him as soon as he crossed mid-court and they still couldn't stop him. Reynolds and Farr are both very raw but their athleticism was surprising and Farr showed good range. Myles Davis didn't show me much but I guess that's because his shot was short all day. Wells was his typical self and grabbed some big rebounds in traffic and Philmore is going to push Taylor and Robinson for minutes. All in all, it was a great way to waste a lazy Saturday afternoon with the kids. Next year may have some growing pains but this team is loaded with talent.

Can't wait till season. A whole new team with an absurd amount of potential. Semaj looks otherworldly. Dez is going bull. Our front court will be diverse though most of them need to gain some muscle. Based on Pure talent, im not sure any other team can compare. But since they are young its going to be tough to compete with the established veteran teams like JOES, SLU, VCU Butler and probably UMASS to. Outside of them I think we will more then hold our own against. Elite talent and top coaching does that for you.

I remember CJ Anderson, a Manhatten transfer, LAUGHING in London Warren's face as the seconds ticked down in yet another X beating of UD. This was as Derrick Brown held the ball just out of his reach grinning and yelling, YOU CAN'T HAVE IT, YOU CAN'T HAVE IT, IT's OVER YOU LITTLE B****. ESPN2 BTW.

BLOBSTER, You can't count Dillard. The conversation was about transferring from a LESSER school. Doesn't exactly apply in his case. When he got to SIU they were still considered a Power non big 6 program, and the A10 was only marginally better thanks to X, Richmond, and Temple at that time.

Dillard's move from SIU to UD was a lateral move at best. In fact, in the past decade, SIU has been a significantly better mid-major program than Dayton. They have two Sweet 16s and a second-round appearance during that time span. Perhaps Dillard wanted to help UD reach the level of programs like SIU, Murray St., St. Marys (CA), Davidson, Cleveland St. and Ohio U, because transferring to Dayton was most definitely not an upgrade in programs.
