Well, for on thing, it seems to have allowed UC to dictate the location of the 2012-2013 UC/X game, which affects the 2012-2013 Xavier Musketeers schedule. I also know that there was speculation that the whole controversy about how Xavier administrators handled the public relations fallout drove a wedge further between Lyons and Mack. Mack and Lyons already had a strained relationship, but it may have been one of the issues to help Lyons make his decision to defect.

I think the loss of your highest scoring player has a significant effect on the 2012-2013 Xavier Musketeers.

Among other things, the retention of Mark Lyons would have given Xavier a legitmate 3-point thread (spreading the defense) and would have allowed Dez Wells to start at his natural position, SF.

I’m have a bit of difficulty figuring out Xavier’s Depth Chart for the 2012-13 season.

For the sake of discussion, perhaps some of you Musketeers might post your own thoughts about this.

Possible Depth Chart (Position: starter, first off the bench at each position.)

C: Jeff Robinson, Jalen Reynolds, and James Farr.

PF: Isaiah Philmore, Travis Taylor, and James Farr.

SF: Justin Martin, Dezmine Wells, and Travis Taylor.

SG: Dezmine Wells, Brad Redford, and Myles Davis.

PG: Semaj Chrison, Dee Davis.

Muddy’s Observations:

(1) Idealy, Wells would start at SF because of his great athleticism and proven ability to rebound (which Xavier really needs up front), but that would leave Redford as the starting SG, and I think that a starting line-up with Martin and Wells is stronger than a starting line-up with Wells and Redford.

(2) I expect that Wells will play both wing positions in most games and lead the Musketeers in minutes played and scoring.

(3) From what I have read about Philmore, he appears to have the edge over Taylor.

(4) If Christon is not better than Davis, the Muskies are in big trouble.

(5) Based on Farr’s performances at Maine Central Institute (low scorer; stats unknown) and in the Deveroes League (about 6 ppg), I don’t see him getting much court time this season other than mop-up minutes, unless another Xavier big man is injured (which hopefully will not happen).

(6) Dez Wells certainly has All Atlantic 10 Team potential, but it hard to see where the scoring and rebounding against better opponents will come from after the departures of Tu Holloway, Mark Lyons, Kenny Frease, and Andre Walker.

(7) On paper, this season’s team looks thinner than any Musketeers’ Roster in recent memory.

Years of predicting X's demise in preseason hasn't seem to work out at all for the Flyer wannabees (i.e. Never). Good sign for this year's team.

2008-2009 Season

I've got to hand it to Paul. It was impressive to see a compilation on all Muddy's predictions regarding X, along side the actual season out comes. The last time I saw a carving like that, I was in freshman biology with a dead frog laying in front of me.

I would think we'll make the top 50, but would be a lot higher if it was the last 25 years instead of 50.
Butler should do well from the scoring system of pts for conf. champions, appearances, etc.

If the last 25 years were done I think we'd be in the top 20 like our position in Forbes.

A lot of what causes programs to win is the fact that they have won before. Its basketball inertia.

For the great majority, programs will just go on being themselves regardless of whatever year-to-year particulars occur. It takes a major catalyst to change a programs standing.

I see nothing that would indicate that this would be anything more than just another scholarship available for the 2013 class (and some additional losses this season)

(and that lineup is still top half talented)
