'Poison-mouthed Juwan Staten" ahh, how quickly UD turns after the "glowing" reports from just a couple years ago. Now he's a bum cuz he didn't want to play for the beloved BG. Haha. I predict a big year for him @ WV.

Dayton Recruiting - Post # 3025

Getting Kyle Davis and Scoochie Smith makes me feel a little better about losing Dillard next year.

We are stocked up at pg, sg and sf for 2013-2014 because Sibert is going to be past his sit-out year.

For the first time ever, Dayton will be adding three Rivals 150 guards to their Roster next season:

4-Star SG Jordan Sibert - (Rivals HS Class of 2010 Profile - # 39 in Rivals 150)

4-Star PG Kyle Davis - (Rivals HS Class of 2013 Profile - # 109 in Rivals 150)

3-Star PG Dayshon "Scoochie" Smith (Rivals HS Class of 2013 Profile - # 121 in Rivals 150)

In 2013-14, SG Vee Sanford will be a senior, SF Matt Derenbecker will be a junior, and combo-wing Dyshawn Pierre and PG Khari Price will be sophomores.

Re: Rivals 150 Update

twisted3829, I have been following Michigan HS and AAU basketball closely for many years.

E.C. Matthews is an outstanding shooting guard - the position he plays on his HS team and on his AAU team.

Dayton, Xavier, UMass, and a number of BCS-conference schools offered E.C. Matthews a scholarship, based on the understanding that he was being recruited as a SG and that he would play SG in college, but Matthews wants to play PG in college and in the NBA - a position in which he has had very little experience to date.

Rivals listed E.C. Matthews as a SG on their Prospect Profile until he committed to Rhode Island; then Rivals changed his position to PG. Rivals does not rank E.C. Matthews as a PG because he does not play that position.

4-Star SG E.C. Matthews (Rivals Profile)

4-Star SG E.C. Matthews (ESPN Profile)

4-Star SG E.C. Matthews (Fox Sports Profile)

4-Star SG E.C. Matthews (Future 150 Profile)
Scout Report

Strengths: Matthews is a great shooter who can also put the ball on the floor and create shots for himself and others. Defensively he is active and uses his length to create deflections and steals

Weaknesses: Right now his main weakness is his lack of strength. Matthews will need to bulk up in order to maximize his potential

College Projections: High Major

E.C. Matthews to the A-10 (Alex Kline, Rivals - September 22, 2012)
The big 6-foot-4 guard from Romulus (MI) chose the Rams over Iowa, UMass, Xavier, USF, Dayton and more.

"I loved their coaching staff and coach Hurley," Matthews told Rivals.com.

"He trusts me as a point guard and they're the only school who recruited me just as a point guard."

Ultimately, Matthews is set on being a point guard in college and he believes that having former Duke guard and current URI assistant Bobby Hurley teaching him point guard skills will get him to the next level.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Note "only school" in E.C. Matthews' quote above.

In any event, the Rams got a great shooter who may (or may not) become a great point guard after Coach Hurley teaches him how to play the position.

I hate how some Flyer fans have turned on Staten. He's a Dayton kid, and I wish him all the best at WVU. The way things went down is ugly, but I put that on BG rather than on Staten. It was BG's team, and it was his responsibility to mesh the personalities. Staten certainly had responsibility as well, but it's on the grown ass man, not the 18 year old kid, to get the team to work together.

Looking back with my 20/20 vision, I think BG should have benched Staten until Staten decided the team interests were above his own interests or he decided to transfer. Unfortunately, Kevin Dillard was sitting out that year, or the whole thing would have turned into a non-issue with Dillard getting Statens disgruntled minutes.

BG handled the situation very poorly, especially in allowing Staten's father so much access. Basketball is not a democracy and coaches need to figure out how to deal with young, talented guys with big egos. Benching him would have been a wise move. UD did have basically no one to back him up, but the team had pretty much imploded by the end of the season anyway. Charting Staten's deteriorating sense of investment in team success throughout the season was a bit harrowing but fascinating in a 10-car-pileup kind of way.

That A-10 Class of 2013 looks a lot like a really down year of recruiting for a regular Kentucky class....

Nor bend (break?) the rules as much. If an A10 program did what some of these schools get to do freely in recruiting, I'd expect the death penalty.

Re: Rivals 150 Update

Word is that Rene Castro will, in all likelihood, join Butler this weekend on his official visit.

The A10 will look like this then (Rivals 150 - 2013)

Butler: Nolan Berry - 128; Rene Castro - 142
Dayton: Dayshon Smith - 121; Kyle Davis `09
Rhode Island: EC Matthews - 92; Hassan Martin 134
Temple: Josh Brown - 127
VCU: Jairius Lyles - 138

There'd be 36 remaining, uncommitted. 1 more commitment, the A10 will have caught the Big 12 to tie for 6th.

I'm not sure what good it does to include Temple on that list, as Josh Brown will never play in the Atlantic 10.
