BEST A-10 POINT GUARDS
1)Tyreek Duren, LaSalle
I think Duren has the best all-round game of any PG in the league. He runs the offense efficiently, shoots well and makes tough shots, and is a very good defender. Some might prefer the flash of Williams or the steady hand of Dilliard, but I'd take Duren by a hair. 2)Chaz Williams, Massachusetts. Most dynamic player in the league and a surprisingly good shooter. Yet the do-it-all Williams can get slowed by big, athletic guards who defend well and he is sometimes quite reckless with the ball. 3)Kevin Dilliard, Dayton. Dilliard is an excellent distributor and creator who handles the ball like a yo-yo on a string. He runs an offense as well as any guard in the A-10 and can get his own shots, too. 4)Kwamain Mitchell, St. Louis. Mitchell is not a classic point guard, but he takes care of the ball, makes smart passes and can create his own shot. He’s one of the most clutch shooters in the league, too. 5)Darius Theus, VCU Theus is not a great shooter or fanciful passer, but like the other premier guards in the A-10, he comes through in the clutch. He also takes care of the ball and is arguably the finest perimeter defender in the league – though Jordair Jett will have something to say about that. |

Re: BEST A-10 POINT GUARDS
Keep it coming WH. It's the first truly interesting reading here in months.
I don't follow the A10 heavily outside the Flyers and keeping an eye on X. I do see some games involving neither of the Ohio schools on occassion. I didn't realize Chaz was having a monster year last year until I checked out the year-end stats. He didn't play well when UMass played Dayton last year. I guess that threw me off the trail. Dillard is the best pg we've had at Dayton since Negele Knight, IMO. I don't think we would have come close to our performance last year without him. He makes our whole team better on the offensive end. He doesn't do that on the defensive end, but I think it's partially because we didn't have a nice back-up at point last year. I think he was saving energy for O. It would help if we are lucky enough to get a good defender or two among our new guards. Last year our guards, as a whole, were awful defensively. Dillard had no place to hide.

Re: BEST A-10 POINT GUARDS
People will debate the order, but I can't argue with your top 5, WH. Interested in your take on Bona's Kloof, his development last year, and prospects for the coming year. Many of the Brown Indian faithful feel that he and the rest of Bona's guards have become a strength, after being a weakness since the days of Marques Green.

This is making my eyes bleed.
I'm glad this drivel is only being posted to an audience of around 20 people, instead of in a magazine.

Re: BEST A-10 POINT GUARDS
As WH has placed us firmly in the cellar, I would be very happy not to have anyone at the top of these groupings if it meant the Muskies were jelling as a team, playing team ball....and climbed out of his cellar to surpise everyone. No superstars, just a well oiled team machine.
If anybody on the roster was going to crack a top 5, it would our freshman point guard Semaj Christon. Would love to see that also.

Re: BEST A-10 POINT GUARDS
I don't think Dillard is the best PG in the league, but if I had to choose one of these guys, I'd probably take him. I loved watching him play last season. They're all excellent though.

Re: BEST A-10 POINT GUARDS
I'm wondering where Cedric Lindsay and Kendall Anthony would come in on this list. I'm not arguing they're top 5, but they're pretty close. I guess one might consider Kendall Anthony to be a 2 and therefore not eligible for this list. And Cedric was slowed by a knee injury from the Temple game onward last season.

Re: BEST A-10 POINT GUARDS
No complaints here. I think Chaz is reckless, but somehow ends up doing a lot of stuff very well. I think Mitchell is a very good player, probably one of the most seasoned player in the league. I haven't seen enough of Duren. No idea who Theus is but I look forward to seeing him.
As for the Dukes, PG is their biggest hole. I'm not sure anyone knows who will start. My guess would be Sophomore PJ Torres from NYC or Freshman Derrick Colter from Maryland who showed flashes of brilliance in summer league. JUCO Binney will probably get some minutes as well.

Yet Jordan Gathers was the guy who surprised me. He really took control of the offense down the stretch. If he can build on that, the Bona backcourt will be a strong point this season. Without Nicholson, the guards collectively will also have to shoot better from outside. I think they will, but it's a question mark. |

Re: BEST A-10 POINT GUARDS
Mitchell would be the top point guard in the league if he was more consistent. I've watched him take over games at the end while facilitating the SLU offense and wondered how he isn't getting more national pub. Then I'll catch another game and he disappears. It's not always that he appears to be playing bad, just that he doesn't get many touches. Is this a function of Majerus' offense? Not sure he's first but I agree that Duren is up there. Last year he stepped up somewhat quietly it seemed, but he's a good defender and an impressive scorer. If La Salle could just get some more capable big men, they'd be ready to finally step up.
Henry will be an interesting case for the Niners. Very good at anticipating steals, but also gambles too much at times. Needs work on his turnovers too. But he was just a freshman last year and got a ton of experience, so will be interesting to see if he makes a leap. |

Re: BEST A-10 POINT GUARDS
SpiderITMB, Lindsay was No. 6 on my list. Anthony wasnt a PG last year - Brothers had just as many assists.
There's also the neither-fish-nor-fowl guards like Carl Jones and, perhaps, Rotnei Clarke at Butler. He may have to play PG this year. Both are among the best guards in the league, but they really aren't or haven't been offensive orchestrators. |
