Re: Dukes land important target 6'8 PF Isaiah Watkins
I called Kleenex. They're going to drop off a truckload for him. Sounds like he'll need it after this rant.
Seriously though, his reaction is almost Muddyesque. Sending whining tweets to some guy on Twitter connected to the kid? Give me a break. |

Bitter. Spoiled. Entitled. Simply put, the absolute worst type of fan.
Imagine: someone could actually pick Duquesne when an offer from Temple was on the table! Congrats on a good "get", Dukes.

Re: Dukes land important target 6'8 PF Isaiah Watkins
I guess Watkins just felt that the US News ranking of 120 was more important than that new scoreboard at the Liacourias Center.
In all seriousness, a nice get for Duquesne.

Re: Dukes land important target 6'8 PF Isaiah Watkins
If the level of player that Ferry has brought in since he was hired is any indication, the Dukes stay near the bottom of the league will be a short one. In some ways, his ability to land serviceable players during last spring's late start, was even more impressive than landing Watkins. Duquesne is going to have good size up front next year, something it lacked during most of the Everhart era.

Re: Dukes land important target 6'8 PF Isaiah Watkins
That sounds like a great pickup. Ferry has stopped the program from going off a cliff. But here's the problem for the Dukes, and those who expect them to be better than advertised this year - the rest of the league is harder. We added two awesome programs. Temple is still here. URI, Umass, and St Joes all seem to be back or on their way back. Fordham still has a stud, and now seems to have a coach and some surrounding talent.
So all this good news about Duquesne makes me feel like they will not fall off the map, like it seemed they might with the coaching change and defections. Maybe what Ferry has done so far keeps them status quo, or close to it. But status quo won't cut it - not when the program has been middling at best and the rest of the league is keeping their feet on the pedal. So I really don't see how anyone looking at it objectively can argue the Dukes making it to the Barclay's. |

Re: Dukes land important target 6'8 PF Isaiah Watkins
I'm not looking at this year, I'm looking at next year. I don't know if the Dukes will finish last this year, but they won't be among the better teams in the league. Next year should be a different story. Whoever wins the starting point guard spot will have a year's experience behind them. There are several promising swingmen on the roster already. Up front, Ferry will be able to plug in 6'8" 5th year senior Ovie Soko, a transfer from UAB, who is sitting out this year, and Watkins. The biggest question is in the middle, but we do have three big men on the roster, and there is enough firepower at the other positions, that we probably can get by with merely "serviceable" play at center. This team is going to have much better size than what Duquesne has been putting out there recently. I can easily see the Dukes jumping from around 14th or 15th this year, up to NIT territory next year. What I want to see this year, is Ferry's style of play, how well he makes adjustments, and which young players step up, and show that they can be major contributors when the two big kids get plugged in next year. If the young guys struggle, then my predictions for next year may be a bit too optimistic. On the other hand, if they surprise enough for the Dukes to make it to Brooklyn, then the Dukes will be a darkhorse for the league crown next year.

Re: Dukes land important target 6'8 PF Isaiah Watkins
Whoa. That is some kind of statement. Adding a freshman and a 6'8" forward who averaged 8 points and 7 rebounds per game could do that? Shoot, some of the guys the Dukes will count on for major minutes this year have never played a minute of D-1 basketball. I expect Ferry to be fine at DU, but becoming a darkhorse for the league crown will be a multi-year process.

A dark horse for the league crown can really mean a lot of things.

Re: Dukes land important target 6'8 PF Isaiah Watkins
Duquesne is also now back in the mix for Rodney Williams (PF, Richmond) after being excluded from his list earlier this week.
Rodney Williams @YeahRod24 I added Duquesne back to my list of schools! Alex Kline @TheRecruitScoop Duquesne back in the mix for 2013 PF Rodney Williams, who's considering Drexel, Western Kentucky, St. Joe's, Winthrop, BU & St. Bonaventure. Seems having Watkins in row makes Duquesne a more attractive location to go.

Re: Dukes land important target 6'8 PF Isaiah Watkins
I don't mean to crow, but did anyone else notice that this kid won the "Tom ODurke Most Articulate Player of the Year Award?" As soon as WH starts listing the Top 5 most articulate players, we'll finally make a preseason list. Go Dukes!
And I have to agree with the academic point that JHG722 made within this thread. The night manager at the Best Western that I stayed in last night graduated from the Temple program and he was excellent. Gave me a free toothbrush. Go Owls!
