Re: A-10 signs 8-year deal with ESPN, NBC Sports Network and CBS Sports Network in '13-'14
Well I changed my post after finding the answer. Any other A10 players from the Canaries?

What are the Bonnies fans' impressions of Schmidt's staff up there? Seems like he and his assistants are finding some good talent under rocks all over the place.

They are a hard working group. In with tons of players. If they can play....the will find them!

So far, the results have been pretty good. Most of Schmidt's players have been good kids, the transfer rate is very, very low (for as crummy as some here would have you believe Olean is, I can't remember the last player to transfer), and the graduation rate is high. Having said that, this recruiting class is huge for Bona and Schmidt needs to capitalize on the Atlantic 10 championship.

Re: A-10 signs 8-year deal with ESPN, NBC Sports Network and CBS Sports Network in '13-'14
Its kind of hard to argue against a guy who took over one of the worst programs in the conference and won the A-10 title in his fifth year. As we have seen, a lot of that was due to Andrew Nicholson. As I think we will start to see this year, there's a lot of that due to Schmidt's recruiting and coaching and I anticipate relative success (not a conference title, but a competitive team that finishes in the top half or third of the conference) this year and for as long as Schmidt sticks around. Without Nicholson, Schmidt will have to create a new system to showcase the talents of the players he has remaining, so we'll see how good he really is very soon and I think he's up to the task.
Additionally, its a fairly unique situation to be in a small school at a remote location with the history that the Bonaventure program has. Schmidt gets that and really seems to enjoy the entire environment, which is probably as important to the fans as wins and losses. The players he is bringing in are also fitting in to that unique environment and fit in with the personality of the campus. |

What the heck happened to this thread?? We were discussing the new major TV deal for the league and then suddenly... steaming pile of WTF happened.

Re: A-10 signs 8-year deal with ESPN, NBC Sports Network and CBS Sports Network in '13-'14
I just hope this deal is as good as it seems at first blush. We were excited to sign a deal with CBS College Sports a few years ago as it had a guaranteed payout (as opposed to the league paying money out to subsidze the old A-10 Network). We then ended up with less tv games as CBS College Sports didn't want to do a lot of games and some local outlets balked at the rights fee to pick up non CBS College Sports games.
My fear is that we get more national games but it negatively impacts things elsewhere as was the case last time. What is the effect of this deal on local outlets such as WHIO for Dayton, Cox for URI, and FS-OH for Xavier. Will the national networks own rights to all A-10 member home games as before? Will they then have "reasonable" fees so that local outlets are still willing to pay and televise games they don't pick up? I have a feeling we won't know the full effects of this until early in the season it goes into operation. Last edited by RF1; 10-03-2012 at 07:40 AM. |

It looks like a significant upgrade from the past contract.

National exposure is nice, but show me the money. Did not see any dollar amount in either article.

Re: A-10 signs 8-year deal with ESPN, NBC Sports Network and CBS Sports Network in '13-'14
I doubt any basketball conference is going to be raking in all that much to be honest, even one as good as ours. What was the previous contract worth? I've heard 1 million total for the A-10 which comes to around $70,000 per school. I can't see the contract approach anywhere close to what the Power 6 conferences command. If it were significant, I'm sure the media would be all over it.
For what it's worth, I don't believe the CAA gets anything for its NBC Sports deal, it's just free exposure as NBC Sports covers the production costs.

It was posted on the Niner board after the CUSA announcement that our TV revenue would be significantly more than what we got from the A10, even before we join the conference for football. |
