Re: A-10 signs 8-year deal with ESPN, NBC Sports Network and CBS Sports Network in '13-'14

Lets not get ahead of ourselves. What kind of exposure will the really bring - the CBS deal was assumed to be "sweet" - then it turned into regional only and equalled about 1 game a week from the entire conference and no great conference tourney coverage until the actual finals.

It pisses me off that I can turn on the TV ANY TIME time and watch Arizona Sand Fleas State vs Northwest Bumfuk University, and if I pay for the premium Comcast sports package - I might be able to catch an A-10 game every 10 tpo 14 days....

Echo the comments above. I am reserving any hint of excitement until the details of # of ESPN games and regional/national games on CBS/NBC Sports networks are made public.

Seems all the conference needed to do was lose Charlotte!

Seriously though, I'm not surprised a better deal was attained. There is more available air time out there than there used to be. NBC's Sports network needs programming badly and the A10 is a good fit for it. I hope Fox launches its rumored 24 hour sports station in the near future too.

As a long time A10 fan and cynic, I just wonder how many of those "exposures" are games where an A10 team plays a BCS conference team, and the A10 team is the visitor. And how many games are televised prior to the rather arbitrary date of Jan. 10, when most teams begin conference play? I will believe all this hype when I see A10 conference games in January, February, and March on a national platform.

Re: A-10 signs 8-year deal with ESPN, NBC Sports Network and CBS Sports Network in '13-'14

There will be 50 A10 games between the CBS Sports and NBC Sports networks, and 14 on ESPN. That is a massive number. Subtract the seven A10 tourney games, and you have 57 national TV regular season appearances every year, and I don't think that includes include tourneys like Maui, Old Spice, etc. We probably aren't getting 30 now.

And we now have a second outlet producing games for regional distribution.

Eventually the money will leak out, but the added exposure is priceless. This is a significant upgrade.

Was worried for a minute that this was total number of appearances over the eight-year term and not per-year numbers.

I think the the ESPN broadcasts are likely to continue to follow the current pattern in which there are relatively few A-10 conference games and more OOC games where the A-10 is the home team. I think the NBC and CBS broadcasts will be prominent during the conference schedule and will be national, though we are talking about NBCSN and CBSS not the OTA networks. Still this is a huge improvement over the previous contract in terms of exposure. Also the press reelase talks about NBCSN farming out games to Comcast owned RSNs. Again, a huge improvement over CBSS because it elimintaes the need to negotiate carriage. This should mean a return to having a significant number of games broadcast on RSNs, even ones in which an A-10 team isn't located like Comcast Sports South for example, which mostly ended when CBSS took ownership of the A-10 network. Overall this seems like a gigantic win for the A-10 in terms of exposure.

It certainly appears that Butler and VCU made the right choice when they bailed on lesser conferences to join the Atlantic 10.

The Atlantic 10 Conference was also a winner, as the additions of Butler and VCU make the Atlantic 10 a more attractive conference for CBS, NBC, and ESPN sports television.

Re: A-10 signs 8-year deal with ESPN, NBC Sports Network and CBS Sports Network in '13-'14

This is a significant upgrade from what we got in the CAA.

Remember this deal doesn't even include regional broadcasts.

The A-10 is guaranteed 73 national TV games per year in men's basketball, and 24 national TV games in women's basketball.

The CAA was guaranteed a minimum of 12 national TV games in MBB, and each WBB team was guaranteed 1 regional TV game.

Need to see more detail, but the implosion of the Big East will make it less attractive for TV. The networks will probably amplify ACC coverage in the Northeast with BC, Cuse and Pitt in or going to the league.

I suspect the A-10 will be more attractive since our league has gotten strong while the BE has got weaker.

Re: A-10 signs 8-year deal with ESPN, NBC Sports Network and CBS Sports Network in '13-'14

Keep in mind, CBS and NBC will be going after more and more football for their networks. I would imagine the majority of the A10 games on these networks will happen post-football season. Mid-December through February. That is a good thing.
