Re: Spring Sports
Indeed. As I mentioned in another thread Fordham's Ryan Rhoomes was ruled a partial qualifier, but I'm hearing that ones not quite over yet and some steps will be taken to try to get him fully qualified.

Re: A-10 Media Day today at Barclays Center in Brooklyn
I thought they may have done away with partial qualifiers. Can these two kids get scholarship aid and practice with the team even though they can't play in games?

VCU is clear to play in conference tourney right? but anyway how do you think the original teams will do against the Shaka way of play... i think it will surely be an adjustment on both sides.

Partial qualifiers can be on scholarship and practice. Can't play or travel. BTW, Ryan Rhoomes will be three years removed from HS by the time he suits up for FU if he does not win his appeal. One year at NIA Prep invalidated, subsequent year taking online courses which the NCAA said are ok but his HS does not want to allow as a core course and now the upcoming year as a partial qualifier. Assuming he was of regular age in high school, he will be at least 20 years do as a freshman. Last edited by ace93; 10-05-2012 at 07:11 PM. |

Re: Spring Sports
Why, because he slacked off early in high school and whenever he's tried to make up the work he has been told the classes are no good, for some reason or another, after the fact? He did well in summer school at FU as well. He got serious too late and has run into some snags in making up for his core courses. From all accounts his SAT is pretty good, his GPA is ok, but he is missing some core courses now because his HS principal does not want to sign off on the ones he just finished taking last year.

Re: A-10 Media Day today at Barclays Center in Brooklyn
I've had kids like that in class and they don't belong in college. They're on every roster. It's a joke. I'm sure the HS principal isn't doing this to stick it to the kid. The credits are almost surely bullsh*t.

Re: A-10 Media Day today at Barclays Center in Brooklyn
Bill Russell, Why do you say they don't belong? If one does not get serious until their junior year does it mean you therefore don't belong in college? BTW, I am not questioning these things because he's a Fordham player, I was saying similar when issues came out with the kids at ND Prep. To me it depends on the situation and I think in some cases the aptitude is there, but the motivation came late.
If you want to say that he does not deserve to to be on a college scholarship, I might understand, but to say he does not belong in college seems extreme. Lots of people get into college after having slacked off for much of their HS career. I think guys like Rhoomes should just go to JUCO and get their eligibility that way, but too few are willing to sacrifice eligibility. I'd like to see the NCAA dock JUCOs only one year instead of the two they do know. That might make it more acceptable to these kids and could get rid of the sham that so many of these prep schools have become. |

Maybe this starts in high school? Is this more the rule or the exception? |

If a kid has a combined GPA and SAT of a certain number, he qualifies. If it's a little under that then he's a partial. If it's way under it, he doesn't get aid/can't practice? Are there defined numbers, if that is correct, for those decisions?

Re: A-10 Media Day today at Barclays Center in Brooklyn
There are a ton of atheletes that have no business attending college. Duquesne has plenty so I am not saying we are perfect. They struggle in their classes and get by through hard core tutoring by the athletic dept tutors and their classmates. They choose easy majors and it is a win win for both the school and the student.
