Spiders Outdoes Dukes In OT

HARRISONBURG, Va. - Junior Cedrick Lindsay had a double-double with 13 points and 11 assists and made big play after big play down down the stretch to lead the Richmond men's basketball team to an 83-82 overtime win at James Madison Saturday.

Kendall Anthony made the second of two free throws with 4.7 seconds left to break an 82-82 tie and James Madison missed a three-pointer at the buzzer as Richmond won its second-straight road game.

The Spiders improved to 8-2 on the season, matching the second-best start in 78 years. Only the 1985-86 Spiders (9-1) started better than 8-2 since the undefeated 1934-35 team,

In Richmond's first trip to James Madison since 2001, the Spiders and Dukes put on a shooting clinic. Richmond shot 57.8 percent from the field (26-of-45), including 11-of-17 from behind the arc. The Dukes shot 52.1 percent, making 25-of-48 from the field and 8-of-13 from three.

Re: The University of Richmond Spiders

W&M and JMU are >>> ODU.

It is going to be a long year for ODU.

One more game (GMU) and we sweep all 5 games against the CAA.

Stetson, @ Kansas, aforementioned GMU, Davidson, Air Force all that remain in OOC schedule.

The Kansas, GMU, and Davidson games should tell us where we're at as we head into conference play.

Re: The University of Richmond Spiders

Lindsay is crazy good. I'd take him on our squad any day. I still remember he was the whole reason Richmond was in the game before things fell apart down the stretch last year. He was so incredibly impressive and poised, shoots the ball well, and makes great decisions.

The CAA is a dumpster fire this year. The conference has no wins against top 50 squads, 37-54 against D1 teams, and only 5 of those wins are against teams with a winning record.

Re: The University of Richmond Spiders

For the past several years, the CAA was a very good, competitive mid major conference. Although I do not believe that they reached the level of the Atlantic 10, they were pretty close. Even though I am very happy that we have VCU in our conference, it does sadden me to now see the CAA being picked apart and descending into mediocrity. There but for the grace of God the same thing could have happened to the Atlantic 10.

Board of Trustees affirms sports cuts, doesn’t vote again

The Board of Trustees met today at the University of Richmond for its regularly scheduled meeting. In what may be the final word on the matter, the board restated its decision to add men’s lacrosse and cut men’s soccer and track and field.

Kyle Ragan, a senior on the track team, issued this statement after learning of the decision, “We are obviously disappointed in the outcome, but this does not mean that we will stop our fight.”

The trustees did not take another vote on the matter, as some proponents of the “Carry the Flag” movement had hoped. The affirmation of the decision was confirmed by a source privy to the meeting.

On Thursday, about fifty students protested the decision at the Board of Trustees luncheon.

One of UR's biggest donors has stepped down from the Board of Trustees over the soccer/track fiasco.

Hope a lax team is worth all of this...

Re: The University of Richmond Spiders

That sucked. I called that last play like 6 times before Sherrod Wright hit that buzzer-beater. He did the exact same thing to VCU last year at their place to win the game.

We got our payback in spades the next 2 games against them, but it still sucks to think about losing that one.

Re: The University of Richmond Spiders

hopefully that second half is an eye opener to the coaching staff that they need to take the training wheels off this team and continue mixing defenses with some pressure. it baffles me why they don't do this more often....completely different team when they ave some freedom within the system and don't rely excllusively on switching everything defensively. mooney can still salvage the season but only if he is willing to make some adjustments to his defensive system that is clearly not working . it's on the coaches to adapt.
