I would never expect more from a UMass-Amherst fan. You people really live up to your reputation. Enjoy the next campus riot. I am sure there will be one soon. |

Onto another thing from the thread: I get irked when it's called "Zoomass" or "The Zoo", don't mind "UMass" (without the "Amherst" part), and prefer "Massachusetts" |

Re: Best rivalries in the league
I love when we beat SLU. Even better when Ivan Kovacevic helps.
I think Bona's most natural rival (in conference) is Duquesne. A lot of cross with our presidents and the Buffalo (ish) and Pittsburgh communities are fairly similar rust belt cities.

Re: Best rivalries in the league
I will say this. The City of Richmond has done its best to revive the rivalry between VCU & Richmond. The City and local media have all but embraced VCU along with the national media it seems and done its best to hitch its wagons to the recent darling leaving Chris Mooney and Spiders pushed aside. Even during the NCAA run while both teams were winning in the Tourney, most of the attention was played to the Rams---a better narrative and story in terms of the media I think but Spiders have talent and will press this rivalry. Afterall, these days you beat the Rams and suddenly there is a rivalry born; ie Butler
As someone who has attended all home games for both VCU and UR in RVA these last few years I can tell you what needs to happen to ignite this city this season is a Spider win and a big welcome to the A-10! I love real rivalries, not media manufactured ones and this one should be a real one now with alot more riding on the win than just in town bragging rights!

Even in the run 2 years ago, the VCU story was an easier angle for journalists b/c they were the last team in the First Four, which was brand new that year. Thus more of a surprise to the Sweet 16 than the A10 champions.

Re: Best rivalries in the league
Yeah UR has gotten it's fair share of publicity. That Mooney article was terrific.
When UR has been good, they've received nice press, just like you would expect a good team to do. VCU has been pretty good the last couple of years and returning a lot of players, so it's no surprise we're getting a lot of preseason love and attention.

Re: Best rivalries in the league
Yup, no doubt. Wasn't implying that VCU hasn't gotten great pub, just that the previous statement as written was patently incorrect as it related to UR.
