The scrimmage is not a run and dunk show, they actually run the offense and get after it pretty hard, probably 75% game speed.

It's definitely more open practice than show. They do a decent warmup line/dunk show before, and sign autographs after, but that's it. They won't wow recruits with that kind of thing, but as a fan it's worth showing up and watching. You can actually learn (a small amount) about what a newcomer may bring to the table and what a returning player has been working on, and it gives you an idea of what to look for in the exhibition games. I remember seeing a play run last year. It stuck in my head. As the year went on, it became the go to play for an interior bucket. If you look at the right things, you can find something in the Red and Blue game.
This is perfect, you probably learn as much or more than an exhibition game.

Ha. This is true. Marques Bennett once had me conviced he was the Black Larry Bird after one Red and Blue game.

UD used to do a MM, but it was inevitably lame. The Arena rocks for big basketball games, for clown shows. . .not so much. IMO, it was actually a deteriment to recruiting as it always came off as hokey. I definitely like the product of the Red Blue game better - real basketball.

Also, I remember Mickey Perry really shot well in the Red & Blue game of his transfer year. That made Flyer fans set the bar high for him the rest of his career.

I agree with what Flyer fans have said that I personally love the Red & Blue game. I don't get to go to it, but you can usually stream it online. Great message board fodder to start the year .

For UD fans as an aside, attending Seton Hall's Midnight Madness two familiar names... Jevon Thomas Jerron Wilbut on official visits.

Re: Midnight madness

SportsIllustrated article from today, 'VCU skips Midnight Madness fanfare, gets down to business'

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/201...ess/index.html

Quote:
There are still some programs that operate the old school way, using the first practice as, you know, a first practice, and would it surprise you in any way to find out that VCU is one of the teams that doesn't have Midnight Madness? For the Rams, it's all business, all the time.

"That's who we are. That's what we do," said senior point guard Darius Theus. "We're going to bring our style of play into the A-10."

That style of play is called 'Havoc', because, as head coach Shaka Smart likes to say, they try to wreak havoc for 40 minutes. More specifically, what VCU does is pressure full court, looking to force turnovers by getting their opponents out of a comfort zone, and use those turnovers to get easy shots in transition. While the style is much different from that of a team coached by Bo Ryan or John Beilein, the bottom line is that Smart is a system coach. And, like those two, he recruits players to the strengths of his system. His roster is loaded with quick, athletic guards -- Darius Theus, Rob Brandenberg, Briante Weber, Melvin Johnson, Teddy Okereafor -- that love defending in the full-court and playing at the top of VCU's pressure. With Troy Daniels and Treveon Graham out there to shoot the ball and Juvonte Reddic and D.J. Haley protecting the rim, Smart has an ideal roster for a team that wants to spend 40 minutes causing havoc.

Re: Midnight madness

Midnight Madness is such an early 90s cliche`. Its Dick Vitale hype with little substance, all fluff, no critique. Its an escuse for students to put a pause on their binge drinking to watch some dude throw down a dunk we've seen done a 1,000 times better during the NBA all star weekend and everyone knows there is never a good reason to put pause during a good bender, just ask snipe.

I much prefer UD's "Red & Blue" game, or whatever equivalent other teams have turned to more and more.

Like I said, a pep rally, designed to rile up the fan base and impress any recruits on campus. And, frankly, it's worked. Programs like Kentucky, Kansas and North Carolina have turned Midnight Madness into one of the premier events of the season and arguably their most important recruiting weekend of the year

Re: Midnight madness

It's not going to happen anytime soon. I've actually heard Shaka's thoughts on the matter and he really has no affinity for the idea at all.

Re: Midnight madness

What's the downside for him DB? I'm stuggling to understand. He doesn't really need the "practice" time involved that much...one evening.
The upside for his fans and recruiting seems strong.
What doesn't he like about it?

Re: Midnight madness

He thinks it's a waste of resources and it's not like he needs to stir up fan interest. The fans and excitement are there regardless and we recruit just fine. He doesn't want kids who commit because of the manufactured hype of one evening. He sells the school, the program, and the work ethic of the team. That's been more than enough to get the kind of players he wants, so he doesn't see the need for it.

He'd rather put the money into other aspects of the program that make VCU better in tangible ways.

Trust me, if he wasn't interested in doing a Midnight Madness after the Final Four when it probably would have been televised on ESPN after he turned down NC State, he won't be doing it anytime soon.

I don't necessarily agree with it, but I understand why he doesn't do it.
