Midnight madness
Just wondering if the conference schools hold a midnight madness function tonight, and if so, whats involved. I know other schools introduce their men's and women's teams, many have a brief shooting/dunking contests, have some musical entertainment geared to the students, have give-aways e.g. t-shirts, hats tickets etc. Many try to get guys/gals they're recruiting to attend as well.

Re: Midnight madness
Rhody Madness is tonight. You basically summed up the entire event, at least what it was like last year.
Should be a fun time. Safe to say everyone there will welcome the new-look Rhody with open arms.

Re: Midnight madness
VCU does not have a Midnight Madness, much to many of our fans' chagrin. Shaka Smart is very particular with how we use our practice time.

Re: Midnight madness
it's not really a practice, it's more of a have fun show off then get down to business Saturday. I'm sure URI is actually practicing beforehand and the "madness" will be some after practice fun

Re: Midnight madness
That is very surprising. It's a great time to showcase the school and I think potential recruits often come. I bet he changes his mind on this in the near future.

Re: Midnight madness
Yeah many of our fans have echoed the same sentiment. We didn't even do a Midnight Madness after the Final Four season. We were able to coax an 'open practice' which was literally just a shoot-around after a private full practice.
He's big on our guys not buying into their own hype. I guess there's a method to the (lack of) madness. The staff seems to do a decent job recruiting without it so I guess that isn't a consideration since they'd do it if they thought it would help them nab recruits.

Re: Midnight madness
Temple used to have a Midnight Madness, but it stopped around the year before my freshman year. We do a Cherry and White Night every year, which I guess is pretty much the idea of Midnight Madness, but we dont have a rapper or any special music act, and it doesn't have the hype and the recruiting draw of Midnight Madness. The game is always really boring and pretty much just three pointers and dunks. I imagine we'll bring back Midnight Madness very soon since we'll be in the Big East and we have our new practice facility to hold it in.

Re: Midnight madness
Many of the older A-10 fans remember Temple having a Morning Madness, JHG.
If you're going to capitalize on Chaney's legendary 5 AM practices, you may as well have coffee and doughnuts for the fans. |

Re: Midnight madness
We no longer have Midnight Madness as well. Personal rather the team have a good practice than the show boating event of MM. There is plenty of time to see the team.

Re: Midnight madness
Dayton has a Red and Blue game for both the women and men. It's always the week after practice starts (next Saturday, the 20th). Not much hype, they basically just introduce the team and run a 20-30 minute scrimmage. The scrimmage is not a run and dunk show, they actually run the offense and get after it pretty hard, probably 75% game speed.
It's definitely more open practice than show. They do a decent warmup line/dunk show before, and sign autographs after, but that's it. They won't wow recruits with that kind of thing, but as a fan it's worth showing up and watching. You can actually learn (a small amount) about what a newcomer may bring to the table and what a returning player has been working on, and it gives you an idea of what to look for in the exhibition games. I remember seeing a play run last year. It stuck in my head. As the year went on, it became the go to play for an interior bucket. If you look at the right things, you can find something in the Red and Blue game.

Re: Midnight madness
Temple had C Chinoso Obokoh for homecoming. He's at Syracuse for Midnight Madness (along with our top target, 4 star G Rysheed Jordan). Obokoh is down to Temple, Syracuse, Texas, and Nova. I'm not sure we'll have any recruits for our Cherry and White Night.

Quote:
I like the format. You can watch some shooting drills before the game. The game itself is a serious practice scrimmage with as much structure as they can get in the first weeks of practice. You get an idea of what the talent is like relative to other players on the team. You don't get a good reading of what the team talent is like compared to other teams quite yet. With some knowledge of the talent/strengths/weaknesses of the returning veterans relative to the other divison 1 players last year, I think inferences can be made about the new guys. It's a rough estimate that gets clearer as the pre-season practice scrimmages play out. But I think my general observations from the R+B game normally hold up. Shooting talent is the hardest to gage, IMO. Guys can be hot and cold from game to game, scrimmage to scrimmage, and you have to get a good sample size before you can generalize.
