Re: A10 Setback Consolidation
Duquesne lost its two point guards in Mike Talley and perhaps its best in some time in T.J. McConnell, both transferring. Of those graduating, B.J. Montiero may have been the greatest loss though some liked PT Eric Evans who had a few good moments.
And we fired coach Ron Everhart and hired LIU's Jim Ferry. Others can offer a more informed opinion but in mine - the loss of the 2 guards, esp. TJ, would be devastating to any program assuming the program had other players around it that would have made us a top team. But the team devolved essentially into relying on McConnell, did not have much height, and didn't always play inspired. The firing of Everhart created quite stir among many especially considering a leaked memo from the President on why. Whether that firing made sense or not is irrelevant to this discussion. Hard to know whether Ferry is a step up or a similar type coach. But he has taken a team to the NCAA, something Everhart was never able to do. Ferry showed something in the scramble to get recruits where it appears he did a decent job in a limited time frame. Only time will tell. Again, others will have much better insights. Overall, I rate the setbacks as a whole at about a 7. The biggest loss, McConnell, is only a big deal if there were sufficient supporting players around him to give Duquesne something to work with. Some would say the recruits we lost with Everhart's firing would have made a difference but somehow I don't see that as key. |
