Ken Pomeroy's Preseason National Rankings (7 A-10's in top 64)
Ken Pomeroy is one of the foremost basketball statisticians in the country and his rankings throughout the year are well-regarded.
http://kenpom.com/ SLU 25 VCU 31 SJU 42 UMass 55 Richmond 60 Temple 61 Butler 64 Here's his formula: Quote:
Go ahead and read through his process if you have time, he certainly puts a lot of thought into it.

Re: Ken Pomeroy's Preseason National Rankings (7 A-10's in top 64)
In terms of purely objective calculations I have no problem with Pomeroy's methodology. The problem is that there is no good way for him to factor in freshmen, red shirts, and transfers. In the case of a team like Butler, the addition of Clarke will almost certainly be very significant but as far as I can tell, Clarke's numbers from two years ago are not included.

KenPom is the best resource for advanced statistics and comparing teams by the time conference play starts. When it comes to preseason rankings, he is making an educated guess. His numbers probably won't spit out anything more accurate than a reasonably intelligent person could come up with.
The eyeball is always the best tool, but no one watches enough games to rank the entire country. That's where KenPom comes in. It's a great tool, but don't fall in love. Sent from my DROIDX using VerticalSports.Com App

The weakest part of the system is clearly accounting for new players. It ignores transfers and recruits outside the top 100. (Functionally, recruits outside the top 50-75 don’t have much impact in the formula.) Obviously, the majority of teams do not have a top 100 recruit coming on board.... ...I suspect the reason that the system isn’t negatively impacted by a lack of transfer data is that it already has a decent grasp on what a team’s “replacement level” player looks like. In other words, its estimate of how to handle the minutes not accounted for by returning players or elite recruits isn’t so bad. So it does take into account 'elite' recruits and has a good grasp of the caliber of new players for a given program. It should still work decently well for X. |

Has us behind Rutgers, Bucknell and Colorado. Not to mention 20 spots behind Drexel. Everyone is all over Drexel this year. I don't think they're better than us, let alone 20 spots better.

Why?
It's a preseason ranking. Further, he's prolly in the correct range for Temple.

So Temple is going out whining. Suppose you need to whine about especially since you no longer have 4 MAC OOC games. Actually like having an affiliation and playing Ohio, Miami, EMU, and NIU. You'd bitch about playing half those games.

Of course I would, because they stink and no one wants to come watch us play MAC teams.

Re: Ken Pomeroy's Preseason National Rankings (7 A-10's in top 64)
I think 64 is a pretty good spot for Butler since the rankings ignore Clarke. Adding by far their best player will no doubt jump them up significantly from that.
