Really? St. Joe's losing to Florida State is considered an "A-10 Suck Factor" loss? Hell, I could argue that Bona's losing to Canisius on the road in a spirited rivalry game as a 3pt favorite wouldn't even qualify as an "A-10 Suck Factor" loss, even though I get angry for days when it happens. These are "Muddy Suck Factor" losses, not meeting the long-time spirit of what the "A-10 Suck Factor" is all about.

The whole concept is stupid. We follow the games, we know who wins and loses and who was favored. Do we really need a specific place to list losses in games the A10 was favored? It implies that there is something special about the Atlantic 10....that teams in other conferences don't ever lose games in which they were favored. There is no "suck factor". It's sports.

Although no line was published, La Salle was clearly the favorite in this game on the Explorers' homecourt.

Unless La Salle fans can provide credible evidence that their Explorers should have been the underdog on their homecourt against a mediocre Central Connecticut State team, this embarrassment will be recorded as an 'A10 Suck Factor' game.

Those are not all suck factor losses. For example: With the 3 point adjustment for home team, GW basically was a pickem'. 7 points is out on the fringe of a "sizeable" spead where you should win the game


I would argue that only VCU, St Louis and LaSalle are the proud owners of a Suck Factor games so far (and I think the jury is still out on VCU). I'm not going to split hairs over this unless the exact same criteria is used when the sweater vests lose a game is a similar fashion....

La Salle was not the favorite in this game, because there was no point spread posted. According to the rules that Muddy Waters outlined in this post, La Salle's loss does not qualify as an A-10 Suck Factor loss.

If you honestly believe that La Salle was the underdog on their own homecourt against a mediocre Central Connecticut State team, you're welcome to that belief, but don't belly-ache about it with nothing to bring to the table.

If I were you , I would be far more worried about Jim Crews picking up his second 'A10 Suck Factor' loss than the fortunes of La Salle and Central Connecticut State.

A loss by St. Louis as a 1.5 point favorite, while unfortunate, would qualify as a "Muddy Suck Factor" loss, not an "A-10 Suck Factor" loss.

Dayton had 2 embarrassing suck-factor games last year. A 30 point embarrassment to Buffalo at home plus Miami OH.

I define an AOSF loss like Justice Potter defined pornography: I know it when I see it.

Throw out all the data and the betting lines. LaSalle's HOME loss to C Conn State is the worst loss of the young season and a clear AOSF game.

The only other was Bona's loss at Canisius. Rivalry game, sure, but Canisius lost 25 games last year, had a new coach and a roster with far less continuity than that of Bonaventure.

Amazed to see Jim Baron at Canisius. His team showed more defense in one game than his Rams teams did in 11 years! (-:

One issue I have with this:
ANY win helps your conference RPI and ANY loss hurts your conference RPI due to the snowball effect of conference play.
It doesn't matter if you play a really great team and lose; that helps YOU, not the CONFERENCE.

I think just using the point spread is dumb. The spread is not designed to tell you who SHOULD win, it's designed solely to place even money on each side for the house; so that they're not handing over tons of cash when a school with a large fan base (cough, cough, Florida State) plays a team with a much smaller fan base (cough, cough, Saint Joseph's).

Besides, based on everything ESPN and the rest of the basketball media tells me: Conferences with FBS Football should trounce all of us Tiny Sisters Of The Poor Without Big Time Football in basketball!

If we're not playing a "BCS conference" team, we need to win that game. Some losses are understandable and will happen. No way we go undefeated, but those are the one's we're counting on winning 85-90% of.

And these games should never have been scheduled in the first place. URI and Fordham are rebuilding their programs. Why are they playing teams they've got very little chance of beating? And of course, let's add a certain loss to our OOC slate by playing a non-conference game against a conference opponent. Stupid.

The Bonnies did indeed lose to Canisius, and it still stings. Having said that, and with all due respect, Canisius lost 25 games last year, not this year. They may turn out to totally suck again this year, much like last year, but the fact that their roster has far less continuity from last year may turn out to be a good thing for them, considering that last year's roster lost 25 games.

I'm also not sure how a 3pt line, either way, would equate to a suck factor loss or significant upset. But, as jpschmack says, using betting lines is dumb.

I have to ask... do the Fordham and Butler wins, count as "suck up" wins?

If you are going to count those games where the A10 team is favored, but loses - then you really should count the games where the A10 is the dog, but wins.
