First Weekend tidbits

Some impressive performances from freshmen around the league.

Best was probably by Dukes PG Derrick Colter and swingman Quevyn Winters. Colter had some bad turnovers, but he scored 17 and looked like the point guard of the future. Winters had 15 points and hit a trio of treys vs Albany, plus 11 boards. Winters is going to be counted on to score.

Butler's top recruit, Kellen Dunham, scored 18 (3-8 3PG) and had three assists. Kid can really shoot, but I don't know if his body can hold up the whole year.

GW's Patricio Garino had 13 points and 7 boards in a good overall game. He's being talked about as the team's future and even just one game kind of showed why. Kid is a player.

I still think Fordham will be much improved this year. One reason is the freshman class. Center Travion Leonard, power forward Ryan Rhoomes and PG Jermaine Myers all showed good flashes in a game-opening loss.

Charlotte PF Darion Clark had 11 boards and looks like a physically imposing athlete.

In the sophomore class, Steve Zack came up big at LaSalle with 19 points and 8 boards. And Dee Davis had 22 points and 15 assists against an admittedly awful FDU.

Player of the week, IMO, should go to Dwayne Evans of SLU. Put up 21 points, mostly inside, and grabbed 8 boards. Zack is a contender, and so is Rotnei Clark at Butler (21 points, 5 treys).

Got my first extended look at Briante Weber of VCU. My new favorite player in the A-10. Ten steals and he inflicted visible terror on the Florida Gulf Coast guards. Sometimes they tried to get rid of the ball when they saw him and just threw it right to Weber. Amazing.

Biggest disappointment? Butler's starting center, Andrew Smith, had zero points, two turnovers and five fouls in just nine minutes. Hopefully it's his worst game of the year.

WH,

No love for Vee Sanford of the Flyers?

Don't really see a flaw in his game...very athletic....can post up...take it to the hole....and hit the 3.

Great game for his first as a Flyer....chosen player of the game.

Re: First Weekend tidbits

Excellent game for Vee, but I didnt get a chance to watch. I had a good feeling about him before the season started. I think he will be a big addition.

My concern is shooting from the 3-spot. Dayton is going to need to be able to put three shooters on the floor.

Re: First Weekend tidbits

Any of the new faces on the Spiders make an impression?

I thought ANO stood out on defense and rebounding. Though that wasn't necessarily all that hard against Liberty.

Trey Davis seems like he could be stat sheet stuffer ala Kevin Smith.

Luke P. looks a year away from serious contribution.

I had some distractions during the game so I didn't get a firm impression of either Taylor or Allen.

Re: First Weekend tidbits

I know what you are saying about the 3's, however this year's team will not take 20-30 threes a game like they did last year. Yesterday they shot 50% for the game which was gratifying to see. I think Vee, Derenbecker, Pierre and Dillard will hit enough to keep defenses honest. Also Josh Benson is stroking the 15-17 footer and while not threes, will present a problem for defenses if he can continue it. He looks smooth and obviously has worked on that part of his game....he looks like he hasn't lost a thing....really proud of the work he has put in and it shows.

Vee reminds me of Ray Springer for you older Flyer fans.

Re: First Weekend tidbits

Sparrow is the guy who caught my attention (again) for the Spiders. Kid is going to be hard to keep off the floor, but not sure Mooney has enough minutes to go around for him, Lindsay, Brothers and KA2.

Among the newcomers Davis and Allen impressed me the most. Davis is a hustle glue guy and Allen has a college-ready body. Allen had active hands on defense and grabbed a handful of boards when I saw him.

ANO has the tools, it seems, but looks to me like he has to get a lot stronger. Ditto for Piotrowsky.

I have also been concerned about our 3pt shooting, but I'm very encouraged by Vee's shooting. Before, I knew nothing about him. Now, I am convinced of his quality. I think Pierre is looking good on the perimeter as well. Derenbecker is "meh" because he doesn't do other good things, even if he can hit 3's. I think we are passable on the perimeter. Our defense is where I see us really improving over last year.

Re: First Weekend tidbits

I wouldnt want Benson taking too many 15 footers. He can be very effective inside. Another three-point shooter to go along with Vee and Dilliard will really open up the inside for Benson, Robinson and Gavs. The younger bigs would really benefit because they are not ready to handle double teams down low yet. A consistent perimeter threat will allow them to go one on one more frequently.

Elvis,

Don't give up on Derenbecker....he missed a month of practice because of a concussion....I think he will be a solid player off the bench and maybe an upgrade over Fabrizuis.

Re: First Weekend tidbits

My weekend Bona tidbit is Youssou Ndoye's play. 7 pts, 7 boards, 5 blocks (and many altered), and 1 pf in 27 minutes. If he can stay out of foul trouble it bodes well for the Bonnies. Struggled a little offensively (2-6 from the floor), but had a great defensive performance. His enthusiasm and energy are contagious!

I share your enthusiasm for both Winters and Colter. With the playing time they will get, both are contenders for the all rookie team.

I'm OK with Benson continuing to shoot the 15 footer. I just believe the guy can knock down a good percentage, and we need some jump shooters. Another shot that I would encourage Josh to shoot is the half hook as he cuts across the lane about 6 feet out from the basket. That's a tough shot to hamper because of the ground he covers. He is not a back to the basket guy. He does not physically mix it up well. I would leave that to Gavrilovic, Robinson and Scott.

One guy I think might help out with the three pointers is Pierre. I watch him in pre-game shoot-around, and he keeps knocking them down. We will see as he gets more minutes, but I have my eye on him. Price is a mystery because I have not seen him try many yet.

Re: First Weekend tidbits

I think, I think that Josh ability to hit the 15 footer on a consistant basis opens up things in the lane similar to Fabrizusis' ability to knock down the 25'. UD used to use Fab to set a screen then roll to the 3 point line for a potential shot, it forced his man to gaurd him and not hedge out against the gaurd that the pick was set for. If Benson can knock down that shot, it allows him to roll to the side and force his guy from overhedging, otherwise opening up a clear shot for Josh.

He's shown the ability to hit that shot from both the free throw lane as well as either side of the basket. Josh is never going to be the traditional banger, his body just isn't built for that, so when he gets a guy like Arkansas St had (6'-7" 275#) he can use that shot to pull that big body out of the lane.

Having reliable 3 point shooting from the 3 spot is nice, but last year's team relied on the three far too often (I'm not sure they had much other choice given the personal). Williams had a nice outside shot, but was a poor penetrator, Chris Johnson was at his best hoisting threes and getting offensive stickbacks, he couldn't really penetrate. Fab was too thing to use his back to the basket game (which wasn't bad in a vacuum, but was worthless against average strength competition) and couldn't drive to the basket to save his life. It was pretty much Parker & Dillard driving to the lane, pop out to the 3 and once Benson went down, not a ton of athleticism in the post.

Its only 1 game, against a team that I thought was fairly solid, but certainly would be below average in the A-10 (hopefully they do well in their conference), but this strikes me as a team w/ more options offensively. Dillard, Vee, Oliver & Pierre can all drive into the lane, Benson & Robinson can step out to 10'+. Gavs has some nice moves around the basket, as well as Benson & Robinson, Scott seems mostly like a Charles Little bull right now, but something this team needs (and didn't have last year). Rebounding was suspect, boxing out was poor at times, but the defense appeared far more aggressive than last year, dare I say better (hard to tell from 1 game).

If Sanford keeps this up, forget about it, but I'd caution UD fans from getting too excited based upon 1 game against decent, but certainly not great opposition. There's a reason he barely got off the bench at Georgetown; sure (the other) Chris Wright played a large roll in that, and possibly age, maturity and Archie are able to unlock something in his game that he wasn't showing in practice at Georgetown, but I want to see more before I start putting Kevin Dillard type faith in this kid to produce on a similar plain as he did saturday afternoon.

Benson is an offensive minded player that can surprise people from 15-17 feet.
He's always been a solid shooter from that range. His shooting percentage suggests he should take more shots. We need to get him more looks.

Derenbecker is not himself. Perhaps he's having a tough time adjusting to Dayton and he missed alot of the preseason.
As a highly touted senior prospect at Metairie’s Country Day High School, Derenbecker was a two-time Louisiana Gatorade Player of the Year, averaging 25.5 points and 9.9 boards per game.
