Re: VCU

I watched the game last night and two thoughts occured to me.
One---I hate instant replay

Two--VCU lost this game on the free throw line.
12 for 24 in a close game like this isn't going to get the job done.

Re: VCU

VCU has no shot of winning the A-10 will not be able to handle all the better competition

Re: VCU

I agree WH.. Free Throwing is crucial and VCU looked pretty poor there. There are going to be too many close games where this can become an issue!

Re: VCU

I think that VCU will do very well in the A10 this year after watching them yesterday. I thought that game was played at a high level by both teams. Shooting was not great because both teams contested just about everything with good defense. VCU plays like GW when they were good, and that is a style that can swallow up teams with poor ball handling.

Re: VCU

If keeping them off the offensive glass is esential to beat VCU, I think we can give them the win against UMass right now.

Were they playing good teams though? I'm certainly not going to criticize that road record, but the competition will be better in the A10 than the CAA, particularly in the middle where a close win on the road against weaker opponents can turn into a loss with a very slight step up in competition.

I think VCU in particular could get hit by this with their style of play. Physical, high-pressure defense works well when the refs let them play, and I'm sure they'll do quite well at home as a result (and tend to do better in the post-season tournaments where more physical play is allowed). But on the road, your players are more likely to get in foul trouble playing this style.

Re: VCU

Watched some of the game. Simply put, if VCU hits their 3's in games this year they win vs everybody. Sorry, thats not going to happen, to me, some of their guys shouldnt be putting up 3's. But when it does rain 3's for them they win and could win big. The Shockers were a Final Four team last year if you saw them at the end of the year - before the VCU debacle. Armstead - holy crap - he makes up for at least 2 of the veteran losses last year. The newcomers - well - they arent playing like newcomers they are playing like the veterans the Shockers lost last year. Kind of expected this - as - the Shockers had all summer to prepare for this game and it was PAYBACK TIME. VCU seems to struggle every year at times throughout the season at times. But when its Tournament Time the seem to kick it into high gear. This aint the CAA men, and I dont know the VCU schedule but the A10 is going to pose some serious problems for them on the road and some at home. This was only one game and its early. So really it means little to nothing except that both teams are good.

Also, I would like to thank WH for contributing to the site. Wealth of knowledge that is accurate and the only other place you can get this type of information is from talking to someone on a A10 teams coaching staff about other teams personnel strengths and weaknesses. Now I have to go back and read it all. Thank you WH.

One game does not a season make.

If you watched us at the Charleston Classic last season compared to the end of the season you'd see two different teams. We're going to get better each day.

No doubt. Ecstatic that VCU is in the A10. Wouldnt doubt that VCU could win the A10 Tournament. Add Butler to that list. The A10 is making me forget about the Big East.

The Barclay Center will be the place for me to be this March instead of MSG. Good bye Big East Tournament.

Re: The VCU Rams

New article from the Wall Street Journal on VCU and what has made them effective on the national scene over the last couple of years:http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000...87446634.html#
Quote:
Virginia Commonwealth, a David slinging at a world of Goliaths, was a nobody in college basketball until a few years ago.

In preparation for the still-nascent college-basketball season, VCU endured an off-season workout regimen that was as exhausting as it was extreme. The players turned tires, tossed kegs and used a parking deck near their home court as a treadmill. They lugged 60-pound bags not far from the site where Patrick Henry demanded either liberty or death. But here is one reason why VCU now beats the sport's big boys: The way the Rams train makes other elite athletes look like schlubs on the recumbent bike.

They turned an August tour of Rome into their version of "The Amazing Race," complete with sprints up the Spanish Steps. In Lake Como, the glitzy Italian town where George Clooney owns a villa, they somehow managed to find a ropes course.

It's a shame the last minute of that Wichita State game didn't come down to a keg-tossing contest or crazy wind-sprint competition. Who would have thought it would have come down to free throws instead? Just crazy.

Nicely done.

Hopefully that gets the response you're trying for.
