Smart said the Rams are “campaigning hard” to get ESPN’s College GameDay crew to come to the Siegel Center next season.
An ESPN programming executive was observing Saturday’s game, which was televised by ESPN2.
“Every time our crowd produces the frenzied atmosphere that it did (on Saturday), I think we move a step closer,” Smart said. “They only do a handful of them throughout the year, and they do them on Saturdays when everybody’s playing and they have the pick of the litter. They can go to Kentucky, or they can go to Michigan State, or they can go to Duke.
“Not a lot of programs get that opportunity. We’re still working on it.”
Would be awesome for Shaka and VCU as well as for the a-10 brand. Hope Shaka works his magic! Would certainly be worthwhile for ESPN as the Siegel Center is BEDLAM on gamedays.
Definitely an arena I'd like to visit sometime soon, although maybe not when my Minutemen are playing there...
VCU's guards need to look to kick. I have come to the conclusion that when our guys set up the shooter with movement and nice kickouts for open looks they knock them down. There is driving with the sole purpose of creating a shot for ME of late. The 2nd half reinforced my feeling that they CAN shoot if given the ball with a good look. Darius Theus used to set his teammates up for great looks and did not barrel to the basket with his head down and eyes forward. This is the key. Drive and beware of your surroundings then kick it!
Been waiting to see our guys drive to create open shots for our shooters for a while. It seems like sometimes our guards forget they can do that, and once they get going downhill head toward the basket with one thing in mind (shooting), whether they have a good shot or not.
Side note: VCU currently the top rated A-10 team by kenpom's computers.
What are your guys thoughts on your recruiting class? I coach in Michigan, and everyone raves about Justin Tillman. Beyond his talent, he also looks to be a superb fit with what you guys like to do.
I am very excited because VCU lacks the long lean wing guys that can attack the rim on the move. Tillman, Gilmore and Larrier will give the team that attribute. I look forward to seeing them on the court. Also a very good pass first guard with a great handle named Jonathan Williams is also coming with those 3 big athletic players. Add them to the team's young players this season that are getting valuable minutes and it = a very bright future.
Had no idea your class was rated that high overall, not that it surprises me in the slightest. Tillman is exceptional, and Pershing's track record of producing solid college players is practically flawless. Best of luck to you guys on the rest of your season.
HaHa! I doubt he is. I will leave politics out of it. These guys will have to work hard just like all the freshmen but they will be a huge help in his quest for a full floor game he wants to employ. Havoc is misinterpreted by some as the press but It is more about making teams uncomfortable in every facet of the game. Three lengthy freshmen that can run like deer and like to fly toward the rim definitely will help.
They call the full Ram the Charging Ram. He looks like he is leaping or prancing to me. Ha! I actually do like him with the VCU font over him though. By himself he looks like the Colorado Buffalo after he lost weight and grew some horns.
I really like the primary logo. That's sharp and will look good on TV.
The rest are just meh, and I'm okay with that since they are basically just going on apparel. I think they got the one the national media will be using right.
I am already getting used to it. I really like the shield. The old Ram logo would get lost as a graphic on TV because it was translucent. The V with the horn is nice in my opinion.
The "VCU" logo is nice. The various rams are rather underwhelming and merely provide greater contrast, as @AlienAiden notes.
