Thanks! We needed a big and we did pretty well with who we got in my opinion.

VCU coach Shaka Smart has landed a 2013 commitment from highly coveted 6-foot-9, 240-pound center Antravious “Trey” Simmons of South Miami High.

Simmons said he was down to VCU and Alabama in an interesting battle with the Rams’ former coach, Anthony Grant. He also had been recruited by South Carolina, Memphis, South Florida, Miami, Temple and others.

Simmons said the relationship with Smart was the deciding factor.

From NBC Sports:

Over the past few seasons, the term ‘Havoc’ has become the buzzword for the frenetic pace employed by the VCU Rams under Shaka Smart. It’s great fun to watch, so when Bruno Chu shared this video of highlights from the past season of Havoc, I knew I had to pay it forward.

As Bruno put it on his site, Xs and Os of Basketball:

Since making the final four a year ago, Shaka Smart’s VCU Havoc defense has been much discussed recently. More than anything schematic, it is really more of a philosophy and an attitude. Certainly it requires a certain amount of stamina to run this kind of defense, but when run properly it is very very effective.
Think A-10 opponents are ready for Havoc?

RAMS PARTNER WITH WTVR FOR LOCAL BROADCASTING TV DEAL

RICHMOND, Va. – The demand for VCU Basketball in the Metro Richmond area is at an all-time high. People are wearing more black and gold in Central Virginia than ever before, and season tickets have grown so popular there is a waiting list to attend games at the Verizon Wireless Arena at the Stuart C. Siegel Center.

With that in mind, VCU is excited to announce a new partnership with WTVR CBS 6 to broadcast as many as eight games on either the main channel (6.1) or the sub-channel (6.3).

"This partnership further proves the strength of our men's basketball brand," Director of Athletics Ed McLaughlin said. "There are only a select number of teams around the country that will receive the type of live television coverage that Coach Smart's program will receive this season, and that speaks volumes about how people around the country and this region feel about VCU Basketball."

The new deal ensures that 85 percent of VCU's regular season games will be broadcast on live television into the majority of homes in Central Virginia.

"This partnership provides a phenomenal opportunity to showcase our program," Head Coach Shaka Smart said. "Our fans in Central Virginia will get to watch almost ninety percent of VCU Basketball games on live TV. We're extremely excited to provide such tremendous television coverage for our loyal fans."

"WTVR is thrilled to make these games available to Ram fans in our viewing area. The enthusiasm and energy surrounding Shaka Smart and VCU Basketball is apparent, for us to partner with VCU is a 'win' for the station," WTVR General Manager Stephen Hayes said. "VCU regular season basketball is a natural fit for WTVR-TV. With CBS Sports' affiliation with college basketball and March Madness, it makes sense for WTVR to broadcast Rams' regular season games wherever, or whenever, possible. Hopefully the Rams will be back on our air when the NCAA tournament comes to CBS 6 in March."

With 15 VCU games already scheduled for national TV, CBS has agreed to air the home opener against Florida Gulf Coast (Nov. 9), a match-up against Longwood (Dec. 21) and Atlantic 10 Conference road games at St. Bonaventure (Jan. 12) and Rhode Island (Jan. 30). Additional games could be made available through WTVR once VCU's regional TV package has been finalized.

"VCU has enjoyed a great relationship with Stephen Hayes and his staff at WTVR-TV," McLaughlin added. "For years we have relied on them to help promote all of our sports through various types of advertising. With this agreement to air our games live on their 6.1 and 6.3 stations, the partnership now goes to the next level. It's a win-win for both WTVR and the Rams as we get to expand our message throughout their coverage area and they will have numerous viewers tune in to watch the Rams play live. Our job as a department will be to make sure Ram fans know how to tune in to the game when we play on the WTVR 6.3 station. Seventy percent of the market can receive the 6.3 channel. It's easily accessible."

For games not broadcast on CBS 6, a radio broadcast will be available on CBS 6.3. WTVR's 6.3 station can be found on channel 206 for Comcast customers and 466 for Verizon Fios customers.

As a reminder for residents outside the Central Virginia area, all VCU home games will be broadcast live on VCUathletics.com free of charge.

Here are some pictures of our Seal Team Training led by former Navy SEAL John McGuire over the last week or so. They are obviously much lighter than a typical SEAL workout, but designed to foster unity through adversity and build mental toughness.

In the morning Shaka is dunking himself in ice with his team at 6 a.m. and in the afternoon...

"This is good stuff," the chief occupant of the bus, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, said after getting a taste of how Richmond combines academics, athletics and healthy eating habits.

On the last stop of a weeks-long national tour to promote the importance of health and fitness in schools, Duncan and his "Education Drives America" bus stopped at Henderson to get an up-close look at a wide range of Richmond programs.

Leading a group that included Superintendent Yvonne W. Brandon, Virginia Commonwealth University basketball coach Shaka Smart, Mayor Dwight C. Jones and dozens of other local political and educational leaders, Duncan took in field games, a dance class, taste tests of healthy foods and computer lab drills. He stopped in the health clinic to get his blood pressure taken, then headed to the gym for the highlight of the day: a basketball shooting competition with him, Smart and members of the John Marshall High boys and girls basketball teams.

Duncan started hot — even in dress shoes, he was lights out from the floor and didn't miss until he was asked to do a behind-the-back, through-the-legs move on a layup — but it was Smart who stole the show. With longtime city athletic director Bill James prodding him on, Smart promised a national championship for VCU if he could hit a long jump shot. To a round of cheers, Smart drained the shot. Then he used Duncan to drive home the point of the day.

"Secretary Duncan was a high-level player and a high-level student," Smart said, noting that Duncan was an all-America selection when he played basketball at Harvard. "It's very, very possible to do that."

While its not their official fight song, but the one they are recognized with, UVA's "Good ole Song" they play after a rare touchdown score sounds like they are all in a funeral procession for their team. I think we can all agree on that.
